Excellent Portable Crate for Crate-Trained Dog
1/15/2013

Customer review by KFinCA

5.0 stars by KFinCA

This nylon pop-open dog crate was a replacement for one that had worn out, only it was a much-needed size larger. It was perfect for my large male German Shepherd Dog to stay with me in a hotel room. I didn't have to drag a big plastic crate into the room for a change. It's only suited for a dog that is already trained to respect the boundaries of a crate, which he is. I would never leave a dog alone in a room in one of these, however, as it would be beyond the scope of its use. The great price for the convenience of simply being able to pop open a crate with one hand while holding my dog with the other, as well as being able to store it under my car seat, makes it an excellent value! I like it so well that I will be purchasing another one for my other dog. Finally, the instructions for how to get it folded back up into its original tiny round shape are easy enough for the first-time user to understand.

Pop-Open Kennel for Small Pets

Customer review by DiPaul

Having just moved from N.Y. to California, we left behind all of our hard carriers in favor of a rather small "carry" bag that the airlines would allow. However, our sweet cat of 17 years has never been a great traveler - even for the shortest of trips in the car - and every time we have moved her around in the small carrier her distress level was clearly quite high. We then set out on a mission to find a pet carrier that would provide more room and thus comfort for out pet. It needed to be compact yet provide adequate space for our girl to stand up, move around and see us for reassurance. This "SportPet Pop-Open Kennel" was just the ticket. It's quick twist method for opening to the full size is terrific and yet, when fully open, our kitty loves to go inside and settle in it. It fits easily in the back seat of our compact car and has now made traveling with our girl stress free. We highly recommend this product.

I LOVE IT!

I have been looking for a inexpensive but practical crate for months for my now 9 month old puppy Ziggy and couldn't find any. I was at walmart one day and decided to have a look at their crates and saw the one pictured only in blue and was very skeptical at first because puppy claws and fabric doesn't usually mix well. But I bought it anyway and brought it home it was setup in maybe 5 seconds. I slowly introduced him to his new "den" and started closing the zip up door which I love since it doesn't get stuck like the slide and lock doors. He does scratch at the door when I forget his toy outside the door but he hasn't been able to put in a rip in it. I love this and would recommend it to anyone who asks.

  • There isn't a handle, it folds down into a flat circle, then pops back up into shape . There are straps at each bottom corner to slip a seat belt through.

  • It does not have slots to buckle and is not intended to carry your pet.

  • The sport kennel DOES NOT have a handle. It is not designed for carrying around with the pet inside. It's purpose is to be secured in the vehicle, then the pet is put inside for the ride. The kennel DOES have loops on all four corners so that it can be left or right facing when buckled into a back seat. Note that it buckles in longwise and is too long to be used in a front seat unless you have a really old car with a bench seat in the front. In my Sebring, the kennel covers greater than one half of the back seat. I don't mind that because the length of the kennel lets my dog lie out full length. So I have it buckled into the seat behind the driver. This makes the opening face toward right side of the car. I hope I described that clearly.

  • Don't bother with this. It is designed as the crate for sleep but it moves too much. You cannot carry an animal in it.

  • Not for carrying dogs but does have staps to secure in car seat.

  • There is no handle, but it can fold up and be latched. It is very lightweight. And it has little straps the you slide the belt through to buckle it into a car. But I just set it in the back seat and it works perfect.

  • There are no handles but there are straps to buckle it in the car. However, be aware that it takes up most of the back seat.

  • I just purchased this pop up kennel instead of a wire kennel and it is doing the job! I am a first time dog owner and just wanted to be safe and avoid any oopsies while I was away. I would say that if you have a dog that is destructive and doesn't like to be caged in, this would not be the product for you since it is very light material, the sides are mesh and they could probably be very easily torn. However, my girls are very polite and well behaved, I've had no problem so far! Hope that helped! good luck!

  • if you have a dog that gets nervous easily I wouldn't recommend it my dog pulled the whole thing in on herself. I have a dog gate up in my kitchen and then put her pop up kennel in the kitchen but I leave the kennel open

  • IF your pet is very well behaved - does not claw or chew - then this could be an alternative to a hard sided or metal crate. However, I would not recommend this for pets with a shoulder height greater than 10 inches nor a weight greater than 12 pounds. Remember that dogs and cats are animals that like to 'den' and a good den, while well ventilated of course, should feel like a solid safe place for the pet. This unit is very lightweight. While I was socializing my dog to the sport kennel before using it in the car he was sliding it all over the floor - it doesn't have the same solid safe den feel. Note, I would say up to 15 lbs for travel under supervision. But unsupervised, I think anything larger than 12 would just be uncomfortable for the pet to be left alone while you are not at home.

  • I have two yorkies and they are around 11 lbs each. Both can fit in it comfortably. I used this kennel all the time with my dogs until they got older and smarter. One would chew the zipper so that you cant secure it when they are in it and then they begin to chew and rip on it whenever they got the chance. Therefore, if your dog is a chewer, I recommend this kennel only for traveling purposes. Invest in a good metal crate for everyday use for long term use. Currently I have three metal crates; one for each dog and a small one for transporting them in the SUV or traveling. They tore up this pop up so badly that all it was good for was a play shelter for them to go in and out of. Those smart little yorkies ensured that I could not lock them in anymore. Although, before they chewed up the zipper closure it serve its purpose to house them and they were unable to get out.

  • If your dog is small and not hyper it might be okay but it could easily flip over.
