Yes they work but the sound is not great I used them to watch a video on YouTube and the sound from them wasn't loud. They have better sound using ITunes. Also I don't know why the middle speakers make no sound at all.

Does the old amplifier tube or solid state, does it have input & output that are compatible with the ones on the newer speakers, ie RCA type. Check any instructions on the old school amplifier, remember the new speakers have their own amplifier, including bass & treble and volume controls of its own.

These speakers have both an RCA and 1/8" inputs on the back. You can use any RCA output on your amp ( just make sure it is a line out, and not a speaker out!)

They do have the red and white audio jacks in the back. So i'm guessing that old school would mean having those channels in the back of your amp. Should work.

These speakers Rock! they sound very clear and fill a room full of sound. I use them with my laptop and they sound very good. I also hooked them up to my PS3 and they rattle the room! Granted they are very big...and not portable...but they can make your computer a very nice sounding home system.

Put them at least 6 ft. apart in a small room. You'll get great sound.
I play my Oldies and they aren't really in stereo but they do sound good on these speakers.
You will need a solid sound card like a Sound Blaster 7.1 to get the best out of the speakers.

Killer Speakers for videos or gamers

I was in search for a some good computer speakers but didn't want to get the surround sound system. Just some sturdy speakers to give my movies and internet radio some "ummph." These are great for that!
They are originally designed to be extra speakers for a flat screen tv (which does a pretty good job, too). What's nice is that it's a simple connection in the back, line in. or if you really want to, depending on how old your tv is, it has the red and white audio jacks. for my computer, it's great because i just use an aux cable to get my audio going.
They do bump, especially for a desktop setting.
Great value, too.

Exactly what I was expecting

These are very good sounding powered speakers. They are Excellent monitor speakers for music listening or recording! If you were to use them as dedicated front speakers for your TV, you may consider an additional sub-woofer. Overall, great speaker and fantastic price!

Great for the $$

Bought these a week ago to use with the new 42", high end, audibly challenged, "no bezel" tv I installed in my bedroom. Vast improvement. Tried some computer speakers first - too much bass, no controls. These do not have powerful bass, but enough for a small room, and both bass and treble can be adjusted on the speakers. This is important because, as on my LG TV, TV sound adjustments may not be available when the headset plug is used to connect the speakers, the only connection option if there is no RCA out audio. Nice that you can add an RCA extension cord to extend the separation distance between speakers. My rating is specific to my use, YMMV

This is a good speaker set for music, which is what I bought it for. I don't think gamers or home theater types would like this. The passive radiator seems to work and I get good highs, mid range and bass. The key to making these sound good is learning the right settings on the computer and speakers. On the computer turn off all the Dolby room stuff, including any so called natural bass. Set the speaker treble and bass on neutral volume, and then it's figuring what computer volume is right- for mine it's 70%. Then turn the speaker volume up and down as needed.

First, I went back and forth on giving a 4 or 5 star for sound quality because the bass on these speakers are deep, even on a low setting, depending on which song I'm playing.
I have a very little hearing in my right ear when it comes to low tones and higher tones is also limited but not as bad. So when I bought these speakers, it was for more bass, a clearer/sharper treble and I think it has worked almost perfectly.(I'm still going back to that to low of a bass at even the lowest setting.)
I have the volume on my speakers set at the half way point and that works great. My bass is a little bit above the lowest setting and the treble is at 30%. I listen to Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Anita Baker, Donal Fagen and Gordon Lightfoot. (That should give you an idea of the different ranges.) Take recording quality out of the equation and for the most part, just about every song sounds great. It isn't overpowering and annoying but the speakers fill my bedroom with a rich and warm sound.
The speakers do have a long throw so having them set away from you, (5-8 feet) will give you the best sound. I have by speakers sitting on my desk because I wasn't getting the sound quality with them sitting on the floor. I think it added more to the bass with the carpet giving it cushion.
The last part of my review is pretty important if you are a pretty serious music lover/listener with hearing problems. I was losing so much "crossover" with my previous speakers and it was very annoying. While playing Donal Fagen's "Nightfly" CD, I'm picking everything up and I'm not losing the crossover. To someone with hearing problems, the sound that these speakers put out will bring you to tears (good tears) because you will hear tones and notes that you've never heard before or haven't heard in a long time because of inferior speakers. Yes, I was brought to tears because I could hear my music.
