I would like to know specifically what needs to be done to install this hoop into the ground. Thank you!

  • A. Dig a hole 24" wide and 24" deep. Pour about 500 lbs of concrete into the hole. That's the beginning. You also pour concrete into the pole.

  • A. With lawyers listening....follow the instructions. Real life.... Buy 7 bags of 80lb quikrete from hardware store. Dig a hole about 14 x14" square. Go down at least three feet using common sense. Loose light soil, go a tad more, hard clay like we have in Atlanta, you should be good. Using wheelbarrow or in the hole, mix to the consistency of peanut butter to the top. Bang the two pole segments together by bouncing on a piece of wood on the ground. Slide the sleeve on the bottom and mark the pole below where the clamp would go. Remove the sleeve and toss over shoulder never to be seen again. Slide the pole into the concrete in the center and level the pole FROM THE TOP SEGMENT in case it didn't go together perfectly. *Remember - going to deep with pole will keep the backboard from reaching 10' which is a failure. Installing the pole a tad less deep in the concrete, 13" instead of 14.5" will assure you will reach 10' which is success. Make sure the pole is facing in the direction you want. Take one of the long bolts and stick it horizontally through the top holes. That will show the direction the backboard will be facing. Clean site and wait 3 sunny days. Day 2 - Easiest from the back of a pickup but ladder will work with helper. Attach the arms, plates and crank mechanism per the instructions USE THE PLASTIC WASHERS, you don't want metal on metal. Attach the Backboard. Attach the Rim. Tighten all bolts now. Crank up till you think it is at ten feet. Now measure with a tape measure. How far off were you? Adjust to 10' exactly and mark somewhere on the crank thingy at the bottom of the plastic shroud. Now crank up to the max and apply the sticker lining up the 10' mark on the sticker with yours on the crank. Fill the pole with concrete. With the extra bag of quikrete, mix it a tad wet in wheel barrow and with a square bucket or pourable bucket, pour a little at a time down the pole till all gone. *Duct tape the pole at the joint to prevent seepage on the pole. IT DOES NOT COME OFF. Clean site and get your ball. Remove tape after a few days and return unused quikrete.

  • A. You;ll need to follow the directions, which recommends a 4 ft hole, filled with concrete. I used a "sona-tube" (cardboard concrete form sold at Home Depot) once I dug the hole, to allow the concrete to fill up the entire hole in a uniform fashion, Followed the rest of the assembly directions.

  • A. You have to dig a circle 2 feet in diameter all the way around and also 2 feet down. Should be no more than 6 inches away from playing surface. Then you'll need 900 pounds of cement. 800 for the hole and 100 for the pole.

  • A. I have installed tons of these. This is a great goal. It comes with a plastic ground sleeve that I don't recommend using unless you plan on removing it soon - it causes more wobble than directly cementing. The portion of the sleeve that would be in the concrete just below the clamp is what you need to figure to install the pole itself in concrete so slide the sleeve onto the pole and put a mark on the pole just below the clamp. Take the sleeve off and toss in the trash. The mark will be about 14" or so from the bottom. Now simply dig a 14 x 14" hole about 2 - 2.5' deep. Fill with peanutbutter-like quikcrete from Home Depot. About 4-5 80lb bags. Better to buy one too many and return it then to race back to get one more. Fill hole to top and smooth out. I like to leave the cement about 2 inches below ground so that I can put the grass back over the ugly concrete. You can go above the ground with the cement like the instructions say - it will help it last longer but the cement is ugly. Then simply slide the pole - all three pieces that you put toghether IMPORTANT - into the wet cement down to the mark you made. Better to err on not putting it in far enough than too far so make sure the mark is up an inch or so to be sure - if not the goal may only reach 9'10" and there is no fix. Too high is good because you can lower to exactly 10'. Another IMPORTANT - The square pole has to face exactly the way you want it to face - no fix! so just double check that it is facing straight out towards your free throw mark. Check left-right level and front-back level and leave it for a few days. If the cement is thick enough, this is all doable and easy. If it is too wet and the pole won't stand up straight or sinks, pull it out and go make a sandwich while it stiffens up a bit and then install the pole in the cement. The instructions call for cement in the pole but the way they say to do it is really bad. Here is an easier way... when the cement is dry and you are ready to assemble, this is when you want to fill the pole w/ cement. It really does add rigitity to the pole and prevents it from rusting from the inside. Yes, here we go again with the cement but it will make the goal last almost forever. Mix one 80lb bag (it actually holds two 60lbs but filling to the tip top isn't really needed) mix it wetter than you did for the day1 so that you can use a bucket and pour it down the pole. It is easiest this way. I put a little in a flexible bucket, go up the ladder and slowly pour it down the pole. Repeat till it's all used. Note- you may want to tape the pole joints because they do leak some water out and the new mate finish they use is hard to clean it off. Assembly is pretty easy especially from the back of a pickup backed up to the pole. copy this link to view the instructions. http://www.atlantahoops.com/pdf/huffy/M8809C41.pdf

Best Mid-Range System Available

Been installing for 11 years. For the price this one is the best (or the 54"). This is a huge step-up from the low end "toys" that are only good for little children. This goal is great because: 1) 4" square pole 2) great looking and rebounding backboard 3)good break-away rim 4) crank adjust makes installation (getting 10' height) easier and is the best way to adjust the height without the limitations of the ratchet pre-selected positions of the cheapers. MY ADVICE: TOSS THE PLASTIC GROUND SLEEVE IN THE TRASH. Plastic between the steel pole and concrete gives and then your goal is wobbly like a loose tooth. Unless you plan on moving soon, don't use it. Use it to mark the pole so you know how deep to put the pole but then chuck it. Filling the pole with concrete is recommended because it adds sturdiness or rigidity to the pole (less wobble) and most importantly, it won't fill with water and rust from the inside out and fall over after 5 years. A pole filled with cement will last 20+yrs. Lastly, it does not take 5 or 3 or even 2 people if you have a pick-up truck. Just set the pole and on the "day2" pull your truck up along side and stand in the back and attach the arms, crank, backboard then rim, respectively. done. If you don't have a truck, it is still very easy to do by yourself except for the backboard. Get someone to put the two bolts in the backboard while you hold it up. But after that the rest can be done by yourself. Then, mix one more 80lb bag of quikcrete with a tad too much water so it will pour from a bucket. With a ladder or from the truck, using a square bucket slowly pour a little at a time down the pole till it's all used up. It does not have to be filled to the top but at least past the joint of the two pole segments. Be sure to duct tape the joint also before pouring, the concrete will seep from the joint and run down the pole and IT DOES NOT WIPE OFF due to the matte paint. The old gloss paint would but not this. You pour the concrete in the pole on day 2 because that is when the pole will be strong enough to hold the weight of the concrete inside it. Doing it on the day 1 will make it heavy and fall over. Pouring it in with a cap on the bottom and trying to pick it up and put in the ground sleeve that you should have tossed is stupid. Basketball goals should be as sturdy as possible not removable! unless you are renting or moving soon.

Good final product but long getting there

The basketball system is good overall. We ran into several issues that caused a lot more work than necessary. They show the two tube sections going together by just banging them on the ground. With 3 of us, over 6 foot tall men, there was no way they were going together. Fortunately, we had a backhoe available and used the pressure from the bucket to get them finally together. This bent the top of the pole but I was able to straiten it out. Pouring the concrete in the pole also makes a mess and leaves stains that are hard to get off. The crank is next to impossible to raise and lower so don't plan on doing it often. This actually worked out well since our last system was too easy for kids to play with. All in all I would consider it again but it was far more effort than planned.

Well it was about like the reviews I read and what I expected. Installation is a bit involving. I am a heavy equipment mechanic and have a background in construction. Not too big of deal for me, but beginners beware. All and all the goal is solid and good looking once you get the pole in the ground and everything installed. I believe it's a good alternative to the $1000 models at the big box sports stores, at least for my 13 year old son. Only time will tell how it holds up.

Design issues for high winds
4/4/2016

Customer review by njSam

The installation needs 3 people but was okay. Last week with the high winds the top pole has bent ahead, roughly 10-15 degrees. The concrete filling in the pole pieces should have made it sustain the wind gusts but did not. I think this is a design issue with the material used. Most others manufacturers don't need this extra step of filling concrete. Not happy with the product.

The instructions were well written and the product is very sturdy. It is easy to adjust the height and the spring on the rim gives it a friendlier bounce than you'll get from those at most parks. It does take 900 pounds of cement for the hole & pole. If you dig the whole to spec the cement will be used about about perfectly. It will take 3 people to put up the backboard and 2 to fill & move the pole. Other steps 1 person can do.
