Exceeded Expectations by a long shot!

Maybe if you're the kind of person who can afford a real wood book shelf this will be a disappointing buy, but for those of us who actually need to shop at places like WalMart, this is an exceptional product. For a DIY particle and laminate book shelf it is really sturdy, being secured by 12 heavy-duty screws at top and bottom and on the fixed shelf, over 60 nails in the backing, and the cross pieces which add a classy finish as well as durability. For one person alone the assembly is pretty labor-intensive, but it can still be done and probably in an hour or two tops with minimal tools or know-how. All of the screw holes are pre-tapped, extra hardware is included, and the pictographic instructions are easy to follow. The only real potential for frustration is nailing on the back straight. I did have some issues with shipping, but nothing that seemed indicative of more than a one-time problem and it did serve to highlight how well packaged this product is. Even with the obvious mistreatment of my package, the pieces didn't get a scratch in the well-stacked, tightly shrinkwrapped, and padded box. The only real con- barely- is that there is some very minor bowing to the shelves at well above the recommended capacity, but there is no indication that will get any worse or that they will give out. Even without the wall bracket (also included and recommended) the shelf is well-balanced and true, does not lean even against the wall and on carpet.

Really this product is well packaged and the appearance is fine. However it should not be called a " book' case., because the construction is VERY lightweight, and the case will not support more than one or two very small books per shelf. My husband assembled the item, secured it to the wall and I loaded it with books. It looked great for about two hours until the moveable shelves began to sag in the middle. We had to remove all the books, remove the hardware securing the case to the wall, put mollys ( hallow wall fasteners) into the wall, then re-secure the case and mount shelf brackets in the middle of each moveable shelf, then reload the shelves. The brackets appear to be providing enough additional support, but we could have just used shelves and brackets in the first place! It currently looks great. But if you buy it plan to display only small items or to provide significant reinforcement.

    Basic Bookcase does its job

    Customer review by RockJ

I have 4 south shore book cases, two 5-shelf and two 4-shelf. They go together pretty fast and with little effort. Reasonably sturdy for a cheap book case, but the shelves do sag just a little when loaded with books as you can see in the photo. They are functionally attractive. The back is cardboard, the shelf pins are plastic, and the price is great. I built a 5-shelf bookcase and it cost me $75 in materials and took hours to cut, paint and assemble. Very sturdy, however. I'm going to purchase 2 more of the south shore 5-shelf units so I obviously can recommend them. I am going to use hardboard for the back and nail it to every shelf, adding about $10 to the cost of each one. If you're looking at bookshelves in this price range then look no further, these will do the job.

some of the bookcases I've seen have the front & top of the shelf finished but on the bottom the particle board is obvious. I'd like to know how this one is made.
    by DLB 4/26/2013
    • The flat sides of the shelves (where you set your books on) are equally finished on both sides--you could turn the shelf over and it would be the same. The skinny, short faces of the shelf are finished on the visible side only, and not the side that touches the back of the shelf.

    • There are 15 holes in this item, you would probably not need to add additional holes.

    • There are a lot of extra holes you will need more shelves and pegs to lay the mom.

    • Yes, but very carefully. Drill hole from outside, and then into shelf. Use a long black screw to hold the shelf.

    • I'm not an expert, but from looking at my shelf, it seems like it would be fine to drill holes if needed. FYI: There are 3 adjustable shelves. The third shelf down is fixed into the shelf and cannot be moved. Each of the other 3 shelves has a choice of 5 holes to place the shelf on. If you were to place your shelves in the existing holes, you could potentially add new particle board shelves to the existing ones, and fit at least 6 more adjustable shelves without needing to add holes--the spacing would be 5 inches between shelves if you placed a shelf at the top and bottom of the 5 existing holes, or 8-10 inches of space where there are no holes until it reaches the next set of holes. You may have to buy some more particle board shelving and shelf holders (which we've done before at Home Depot--they'll even cut the board for you). Good luck!

    • You won't need too it has extra holes. You put pegs in the holes and the boards sit on top of them.

    • There are lots of holes already drilled. The problem would be finding or making shelves that match, but if you don't mind mismatched shelving it would be fine.

Was this answer helpful? (0) (0)
    • There are so many extra holes for the adjustable shelves, that you could add more adjustable shelves without drilling any extra holes. Just space the adjustable shelves out in a way that you can use the existing holes. And then get yourself more shelves.

    • There are actually plenty of holes for shelves, you just have to get the little clips to hold the shelf and the shelves. I don't think you would need to drill any holes at all....more than enough there already.

And is the chocolate really dark, like almost black?
    by karin 7/16/2013
    • YES. It will hold DVD players, CD players, Cassette players, most bookshelf speakers, cable boxes, and tapes and albums too. Don't know about the chocalate color except it's lighter than you think. The black finish is a satin that blends in well.

    • I don't think it is right for a dvd player or cable box because there isn't a hold in the back for the cords to pass through. We put toys on here and decorative items.

    • This would make a very nice media shelf. The shelves are strong and would be able to hold the different media pieces. Just be careful when cutting the back for the wires, it has a nice look and shouldn't be hacked up.

    • It does have a cardboard backing on it , so I would imagine that you could cut a hole in the back to accommodate any cords from your electronic pieces. As far as the color, I ordered a white one so I can't help you with that!
      by Llona19/23/2013
Was this answer helpful? (0) (0)
    • I don't know about the color, but you can use this as a media stand if you use the middle permanent shelf for a light flat screen tv and the dvd player and cable box were to go on an adjustable shelf below that. You would have to either cut a hole or holes in the paperboard backing of the shelf to fit the power cords, OR you could just not attached the paperboard backing to the bookcase at all. I would only use it for a smaller sized flat screen TV though, because I'm not sure how much weight the non-adjustable shelf will hold. Probably safely will hold 25 pounds, more weight than an adjustable shelf would hold.
