A Good Basic DVD Player, 01/02/2010

It's obvious that current DVD players are manufactured with lighter-grade components than older models, which is typical of electronics in general. The other end of that trend, of course, is that it becomes possible to get a lot of features at a relatively inexpensive price. The upscaling function found on this model makes a significant improvement when viewing DVDs on a high definition set, particularly 1080p models. Setup is easy, particularly when using an HDMI connection.
I found only two negatives, both relatively minor: First, the Braviasync function did not automatically work even though both the TV and the player are listed as supporting it. (This is the feature that allows a user to hit one button and activate both the television and the player, without having to navigate setup menus and the like.) The second is that in order to get the price listed, I had to order this unit online. The same player was $20 more in my local Wal-Mart stores, which is a significant difference at this price point. Still, this is a good value for the dollar and makes a good stopgap for anyone with a significant number of DVDs who isn't ready to make the jump to blu-ray.

Review as an audio CD player, 01/07/2010

Apparently, it's very difficult these days to buy a dedicated component CD player. So, we're relegated to basically using our DVD and Blu-ray players to listen to our CDs.

I bought this player to be my exclusive music player without any intentions of using it for video playback. Take my review with a grain of salt.

I was attracted to this unit to replace my cheaper Sony DVD player ($37 at Walmart) because of two features:

1) The ability to play audio CDs.
2) The ability to decode iTunes AAC files.

I have an extensive iTunes library, so this player allows me to make DVDs that hold hundreds of my iTunes songs, rather than mastering an audio CD with up to 15-20 songs.

So, how does this player rate as an audio player?

Not too bad. It plays songs, so that's good. But, it could be better. However, considering this player isn't a $400 Emotiva or a $2000 exotic tube amp player, it does well for the $70 paid for it.

My only complains about it are:

1) The player plays the music extremely bright. In fact, the 1K hz frequency is insane. I have to basically lower that frequency as far as my equilizers will go. Also, the 4k-16k are also heavily emphasized, making cymbals sound strong, as well as increasing singer's sibilance. This is easily corrected in the equalizers as well. The bottom line with this player is don't expect to get perfect sound without adjusting your equalizers. In other words, it does not make faithful reproductions of the original recordings. But, for the price, I'm not upset at all.

2) The player does not shuffle music songs.

3) When playing back iTunes files, there is a longer than expected gap between tracks. Sometimes, this gap can be 3-6 seconds long, depending on the song. Also, it will no honor gapless playback between tracks when using iTunes files. It will honor gapless on regular audio CDs, though.

Overall, this player does what it is expected to do at the price range. You just need to equalize the sound a little on your own because it isn't faithful in the fidelity of sound.

Great DVD upconvert!, 05/31/2009

I bought this DVD upconvert yesterday, and spent almost all night watching my DVDs I had been viewing with my older, regular DVD player and was amazed that this unit presented those DVDs via my TV in near HD quality! It is a GREAT machine all around. I have but one dissenting comment: the three (3) manual buttons are atop the unit and are very thin. You have to push them until they 'click' to open the dish, and they are placed in a difficult indentation, since the remote will not reject the DVDs; you have to use the 'open' button. I fear that these buttons could go bad if pressed down too hard, so be careful. Otherwise: it was easy to install (10 minutes from box to working) this is the best player on the market for those of us who don't have HD flat screen TVs but would love the near HD viewing, which is what you can get with this player. BUY IT!

Had to return it, 05/11/2009

There are no optical outputs to interface it with my Sony surround sound system, so it has to go back. I am really surprised that Sony does not include these connections.
