We do not have an HD TV - our computer is Windows Vista. Will this device work on it's own with an older TV set (10 years)? I don't want to buy a 'game' unit to watch Netflix, etc.

    • A. If your TV has composite in jacks on the back it will work fine.(yellow, white, red input).

    • A. The Media Player had A/V jacks in the back (red, white, yellow) and if you see those in back of your TV it should work. It does not have a RCA, coax cable jack though.

    • A. There are three types of video outputs on the SMP-N100 – HDMI, Component and Composite. A standard definition TV that’s around 10 years old is very likely to have a composite input or two (the yellow RCA jack) and accompanying audio jacks (red and white L/R RCA jacks), so the SMP-N100 should work fine with that. It doesn’t have a coaxial output however, so if your TV has nothing but a coaxial connector you will need to purchase an RF Modulator.

I like the Sony MNP-N100. But the main reason I bought it was to watch my stored movies on my NAS video server. It never did recognize the server. I looked over the apps that it comes with and they look good. But in my brief review of the apps, they all (or most) seemed to be a pay for use. I do like the outputs HDMI and the old standard RCA jacks although the latter is slowly going away but still are good to hook up speakers for Pandora. I did not keep this unit but instead went with the LG SmartTV. This unit does not have the outputs of the Sony but does a great job recognizing the server as well as having nice apps. Yes it even can access the internet as a brouser (with a limited on screen keyboard). Also in a new update from LG, the SmartTV has the ability to communicate via WIFI-Direct. Both are nice and I would recommend the Sony if it connects with your video server or if this is not important, but at the end of the day, my vote is with the LG. Good luck

I purchased this Sony product because I have a Sony LCD HDTV. The unit is in my living room next to the TV and my PC is in my home office, about twenty feet away with a wall in between. The WiFi works just fine. I also purchased a 1.3 HDMI cable to hook the media player to the TV. I am very happy with this set-up. I get HD quality movies through NetFlix at a fraction of the cost of cable or satellite. Sony tech support walked me right through the network set-up. It took about twenty minutes, mainly because I couldn't remember my network password. 5 Stars!

This is a great media player after an online update. A very good value at WalMart's $89 price. Sony has apparently listened to the masses and has provided an online update to the SMP-N100 media player. This update adds features found on other popular players, such as the Roku XD/S. Now you can simply select Netflix (or a number of other internet media sites), browse through the selection of videos and immediately start watching your selection. The N-100 includes a search feature for internet videos as, but you cannot browse or search any site that you want - only media "resource" (video/picture/audio) providers selected by Sony (such as YouTube); this feature is similar to limitations on other players. Parental contol is included, but there isn't much beyond YouTube's level of content restrictions on any site that the media player will access. Even so, parental controls may be important to some owners. Both a front and rear USB port are included to play media from. It is (currently?) not possible to save data to USB media on this product. A PC is required to register the N100 with NetFlix before it can be used for that service, which is the same as registering a Roku player. The N-100 picture quality using HDMI and component output is excellent. Video and audio output connections are the same as on the Roku XD/S. Pros: Excellent video. Includes HDMI, Component, and composite outputs. Has both analog and optical audio outputs. Front and rear USB ports. WiFi and Wired connections. Good value price point at Walmart ($89) Cons: Sony still lags behind Roku in the number of media sites available to the player. Sony needs to step things up and start leading the competition in ease of use and content availability. Internet video browsing is limited to selected sites (similar to limitations with other brand media players) Slightly overpriced (MSRP=$129) compared to a Roku XD/S (MSRP=$99), but a much better value after the latest software update.

I got this to use with Netflix. If I knew that you could only watch the moves you have moved into your "instant queue" I would have chosen another device. It does work well to view picture over the network, but it won't play your MP3's or movies that are on the server, I blame Microsoft for that. I hope this is helpful.

It's an impressive device for accessing Internet content (movies, music, etc.), seems to work flawlessly over my wired network, and it was easy to set up. However, I also bought the SMP-N100 to play music from my home library stored on a Windows Vista PC and it's disappointing in that area. It did not recognize Windows Media Player 11 or Tversity as valid DLNA servers. I had to buy Twonky for it to recognize my home library through DLNA. But the worst shortcoming is that when you attempt to play a group of music files (based on artist, album, genre, etc.), you can only play them in alphabetical order. There is no shuffle. And there is also no concept of a play queue. So you cannot play songs from one artist and then add songs from another. These are very basic features needed for audio playback and hopefully will be added by Sony with the next firmware upgrade. Otherwise, it's not really usable as a digital audio player.

I really like this device and it serves well as my bedroom TV's main source. It supports a wide variety of formats which is nice. Kinda wish I had been a little more attentive to this when I purchased it though as most of the useful formats cannot be streamed over DLNA but are USB only. I really hope this is addressed in a future update. Otherwise there is a chance I may need to find another solution. The whole point of a device like this is to be able to store your media centrally, not replicate it over multiple portable drives for each viewing location. Probably some industry bias involved. Built in Wifi is a huge bonus. Really wish it saw my 5Ghz band though so I wouldn't need to go over the crowded 2.4Ghz band. Hasn't affected the performance as far as I can tell though. All in all this is a very good device and pretty affordable for what you get. However there is room for improvement and I am looking forward to Sony giving this device further attention as time goes on. It would be a 5 star across the board if Netflix and DLNA support were improved.

I have had my SMP-N100 for two months and I love it. The access to Amazon, Netflix, Hulu & media on my network is great. I linked my unit to all three, over my wireless G network in about 30 minutes. After that, I really did not see much need for the cable DVR or the premium movie channels so I was able to cut my monthly cable bill in half. I have a Logitech Squeezebox to handle all my audio. I use this unit strictly for video. The only thing I wish is that the unit had a USB port in the back. I have a 1.5 TB HDD permentaly attach and the USB plug sticking from the front of the unit is a little annoying. A minor issue but everything else about the device is exactly as I hoped. The linking of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc. is similar to method used to link accounts on XBOX or PS3. I found it straight forward but if you have never done it before I guess it would be confusing. I would definitely recommend this a friend.

I've own about 8 of them just had ordered two more from Walmart. Can't be the price. I don't care about the newer model SMP-N200 the remote is small and I don't need 3D. SMP-N100 displays Netflix, Youtube and CrackleTV just fine! There are other links for pay and free internet stuff. I mostly run 100mbps, 1000mbps, 802.11g and 802.11n. I use the SMP-N100 over 802.11n no issues at all. I also it with two SONY HDTV series BX and EX no issues they actually sync up with the SMP-N100 too using one remote from SONY. I tested both Component Red / Blue / Green cables no issues. Best to get HDMI @ 1080p best picture and sound! So you can get this one for $49 which I did buy as the new one cost for a lot more.

While it looks good on the outside, Sony needs to put more attention to the software applications that it uses to provide content. Netflix, Hulu and Crackle all have more content then this Sony box provides. Sony has decided not to allow us the us, the end use access to content that is available on the websites of the a fore mentioned providers. This is most likely because before buying this waste of time device, I did not remember the fact that Sony is an entertainment company and would drive me to purchase it's own content buy making other applications very limited in what you can do with them. Hulu; no instant cue Netflix: no sub catagories, My WDLivePlus has sub cats, just like their web site does. Crackle: Very Very limited. This box also uses it's own network to deliver content, this is another reason why the content is not up to date with the websites of providers. To have to sign up to the Sony network just to use this box, is just plain ridiculous. I can go on forever, but just take my word for it Don't buy this Box. I'm sending this thing back to Sony after I finish this review.
