No. this controlled "resembles" and plays like a real one because it has strings on the bridge. The other controller is a Fender Strat that goes on preorder Jan 1 2011 and will be available Mar 2011. According to Playstation website. It will double as a playable guitar and peripheral for Rock Band 3.

Actually, you can plug it into a computer to use as a MIDI guitar, since it has a MIDI interface. As a MIDI guitar, you can use it in programs such as fruity loops to control synthesizers, making it very versatile.

In a way, it's better than a real guitar.

No, this is NOT the "Real Guitar" controller. That controller has been released, and costs about $30 more. It has real strings (this uses buttons for each string / fret combination), requires tuning, and plugs into an amp. This controller works only with the console, has no strings (you strum thick, durable, plastic 'strings' that only cover a small part of the body of the guitar, not the neck), and has no midi or amp plugs.

Is this the controller that doubles as an actual guitar or is that going to come out later?

The hook ups and / or frequencies are different for each system and sadly, they will not work cross-system, you'll have to get the controller for the system you own.

great guitar controll for a beginner

Rock Band 3 Pro instruments is brilliant! My boyfriend wanted to learn to play guitar so I bought this controller. He practices in trainer mode then once he feels like he has a song down, he can IN FACT play the real song on his acoustic guitar. So much fun and waaaaay more convenient (and cheaper) than guitar lessons. You will need patience and practice....it is just like a real guitar!

I would also recommend getting pro keys and the cymbal expansion pack. We play every chance we get!

This controller works really well, and was a great buy.

Great guitar game controller

I played Rock Band on the traditional 5 button controller, and could play all songs on expert. I had never before played a real guitar. After doing the easy training, and within one hour with the new controller, I was able to play the game on easy with no trouble at all. It's been a few weeks and I'm still playing on easy, but I've gotten a 5-star rating on nearly every song.

I have no doubt that anyone who puts in the time and a serious effort can and will learn how to play an actual guitar with this tool. It's not a game however, it really requires hard work and dedication, and a real commitment. It's not something you can hand to a friend who doesn't play guitar and 'compete'.

You could get an actual guitar cheaper than this controller, but what you get with it is essentially free at-your-own-pace lessons as you learn to play music you recognize and care about. Skills on the pro guitar controller easily convert to real-life guitar skills, although this guitar uses buttons (over 100) instead of real strings, so picking up a real guitar after this will still take some adjustment.

It does not come with a pick, which may be helpful for some players, especially on harder difficulties and on lead guitar. The controller is sturdy, looks and feels great, and is not 'a cheap piece of plastic'. It's worth the cost, but only if you are serious.

Be aware that even without strings, some finger discomfort is to be expected early on, similar to a real guitar.

This proved too difficult for my husband. We ended up giving it to our 30 year old son who knows how to play a real guitar. He said it was difficult, too, but was able to get the hang of it after a while.
