    • A. You must have wireless internet service already available in your home. You may need a wireless router, but your internet service provider should know what you need to connect with wifi.

    • A. The Sony BDPS390 BD Player can be connected to the WiFi network when you are using Modem and Router. Sony Internet video devices are only compatible with the IEEE 802.11x WI-FI standard. 3G or 4G USB devices use the WIMAX or the LTE standards, which are IEEE 802.16x. They are not compatible with the wireless communication requirements supported. Also, these devices may require the installation of drivers and software which are not included with the Internet video device and they cannot be installed.

    • A. Where your cable comes into your house, there is usually a router between it and your computer. If this router has wireless capabilities then yes it will work, if the router isn't wireless, then no it won't work by WIFI. There is an Ethernet connection on the back of the blu-ray player, so it can be plugged into a router.

Also I will be using it wireless. Do I need a lan cable? The dvd player will be in the living room & my internet/computer will be in another room. I know I will need a hdmin cable. I am new to this kind of stuff & do not know anything about it. Will netflix be slow because I have dsl?

    • A. Yes, I have att dsl and watch it wirelessly. Also stremming videos like netflix. However, I had a bit of communication problem with sony but finally figured out I had to put in the code with sony. You don't need a lan cable. Just hook dvd to tv and link with your wireless. I have the same setup.

    • A. No lan cable as long as you have a wireless router. Just let the sony player scan for available connections. I'm not sure about DSL and netflix though.

    • A. This player has a built in antenna for WiFi (wireless from your DSL router) and should work pretty well with that. I use a LAN wire to avoid any interference via the over the air transmission. It works great with a cable, and should work just fine with the WiFi. Of course you need to make sure you have a wireless router (look for an antenna on top). ALSO, ON YOUR NETFLIX ACCOUNT YOU CAN SELECT YOUR PICTURE QUALITY. START WITH THE BEST...IF IT IS SLOW THEN TRY THE MIDDLE. Connect the BluRay to your TV with an HDMI for the best audo/video.

    • A. I have uverse dsl and just set this player up with wireless. You don't need a LAN cable at all but you do need the wireless security code for your router. That's usually located on the bottom of your modem/router but you can also call your provider and ask. I don't have a NetFlix subscription but I've already browsed the internet without problem. Of course, it all depends on the internet speed you have. Whether you have dsl or cable, it all works the same on the player. Yes, you will need an hdmi cable to connect to an HDTV but that is all you will need to connect it.

    • A. It is required to have atleast 2.5 Mbps and 10 Mbps Internet speed to stream SD and HD Netflix videos respectively. If your DSL Internet connection is capable of accessing the Internet with these speeds, then there should be no issues while streaming Netflix in the Sony BDPS390 Blu-ray Disc Player; otherwise, there will be buffering or in some cases, it will not at all connect to the Internet. It has built-in WiFi and therefore it can be connected wirelessly to the Network without the use of a LAN cable. The recommended distance for wireless communication between the Router and the Sony Blu-ray Disc Player is 30 feet. The HDMI cable will be required to connect to the TV for viewing the signals on the screen.

I'm not one to get excited about Sony products, but this meets and exceeds everything I was looking for. First at price point, this is fairly priced considering built in Wifi. Don't be fooled by some of the cheaper brands that now include Wifi, I've tried and (returned) several due to constant signal drops. The internet content is exceptional, and to my surprise Sony included many free services - seemingly 3rd party companies? that offer free movie streams, the video sites you know (youtube, dailymotion, etc), and more. You have a few pics of movie rental services as well. You will feel like you just gained a free mini-cable TV subscription when you browse the "channels". Netflix works exceptionally well, no problems - never any motion lag (a noticeable flaw on cheaper players). As for playing blu-ray disc, this also works well - I've had no disc skipping issues. Did I mention this is quiet? That's a real problem with some disc players. All around this product has impressed me and I felt the need to write this review for that reason... if you do buy a different brand, consider some of the warnings I've included.

I bought this after returning the Vizio $98 dollar Blu-ray player. The menu system is on the Sony is very similar to the PS3 and doesn't seem under powered when navigating the menu system or entering text. We use it mostly for streaming Netflix, Amazon and Vudu and the streaming works great.

My player has not been working correctly for several months; my TV would suddenly lose the signal from the player while the player was still playing. I would unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in and it would work again for awhile; this happened with almost every use. I changed the HDMI cable and TV, but it did the same thing. Today the player died. It has power, the mechanics within the player are clearly trying to do something (I can hear them), but nothing ever happens, no lights on the display or anything. There is currently a DVD stuck inside. After a 10 min. wait, I spoke with "Grace" with a heavy foreign accent. (it could have been "Peggy", j/k) she spent about 10 min. with me and concluded that I needed to hire someone to get the disc out manually and then send them the player and pay SONY $131 for a replacement!!!!! I told her that I might just go buy a new non SONY replacement and she said that it was my choice and ended the call....Thanks SONY, you just narrowed my search for all future tech products! SONY is out.

Yes, this is a lower level player but I had a Sony Blu ray player before this and loved it but it didn't have wireless only a wired connection which didn't work for me. Now this one has tons of apps and plenty of options for free music and movies along with pay per view movies. It has a smaller design, easy set up, and plays the movies just fine. A lot of this player's qualities come from internet speed so the faster the better and that may be why Facebook hasn't worked well for me on this but I'd rather check it else where anyway. Pros Lots of free stuff (movies and music) Movies/TV = you can just about find any movie or TV show you want for purchase or rental and they vary in price so you can have some price savings by searching Vudu = give a $6 credit and has an internet speed checker and also sells HDX movies (1080 at a slightly higher price) Netflix = has a button for it on the remote and also offers a free trial Hulu = 3-month trial You Tube = tons of videos Vudu/Hulu = its the only player I've seen personally to have both (but I'm sure there is more I haven't seen too) USB for BD live updates for movies or looking at files on the player Compact design Wireless = b/g/n Easy updates Lower price Has a browser Cons Wireless doesn't seem to pick up as well as my other electronics but doesn't seem to change the outcome of movies at all Facebook doesn't work well (always loading but not a big factor to me) No display in front Remote is smaller Apps that are not as user friendly as I have found else where with other streaming players Apps that I wouldn't use or don't care about (not a big deal) I've had one movie so far that wouldn't play in the player (and it was a Sony movie too! Ha!) Overall Yes, I've already recommended this player to friends because it offers more than your old player likely and is at a great price even when not on sale. Everything is going to streaming so it is advantageous to have something that does and starting out with this one is not a bad move unless you have bad internet speeds. And yes there are better ones with more bells and whistles but that's why you pay more for those. I am very happy with this player and would give it as a gift. I only wish it had some weather and news apps to it but it can always be updated later.

I bought this unit mainly for its internet connectivity and to play an occasional DVD on my HDTV. It does both without problem. I don't have a 3D TV, so that was not a concern for me. Setup of the internet connection was not difficult, although using the TV interface to enter information was rather slow and frustrating. You are offered the option to do the setup on-line, which I probably would do if I had to do it again. The shortcomings of this product in my opinion are (a) the remote, for some reason I always find myself holding it upside down due to the way it feels in my hand, and (b) the unit can be slow to respond to menu choices. The first time I put in a DVD I thought it was broken - it took about a minute to start playing! However, subsequent uses were much more responsive. There are a ton of internet options - hulu, vudu, netflix, amazon prime, and at least a dozen more. Overall this is a good unit for the money.

Easiest video player I've ever connected & set up

... and I've been setting up video players since the 1st VCR's cost over $1000, over 30 yrs. I bought it last night. The Easy Setup steps were complete in 5 minutes, wireless in less. I've had fun with the internet browser setup and already have bookmarked many websites like twitter & uverse.com and even my yahoo email account. The browser speed is totally dependent on your internet speed. It may seem to lock up but give it time and it will free up. The text input is on a number pad like on older cell phones and not bad once you get use to it [like we use to be]. Activating the subscription services [like NetFlix, Sony Entertainment] is easier online. Start at the tv, they give you an activation code to use that makes it simple to do online. Quite a bit of the streaming video available is free; you don't need any paid subscriptions to start. I don't have any BluRay discs but it plays dvd's on an HDTV beautifully. Walmart's price could not be beat and I couldn't see spending $30 or more for only a dvd player. BluRay and streaming is the way the world is going. I plan to network to my pc when I have time. I couldn't be happier and I would highly recommend this Sony player to beginners as well as geeks like me.

    Fantastic Value Sony Blu-ray Player
    1/18/2013

    Customer review by Mckyler

Purchased this player for $78 on sale. I was attracted to the low price and the WiFi capabilities it promised. I'd never purchased a blu-ray player before, so I really didn't know what to expect. After reading some of the other reviews, I knew I needed an HDMI cable to go with it, so I picked up a "GE" brand 3.5 foot cord for around $14. Got the player home and had it out of the box and connected to my TV in 3 minutes. It was then connected to my router and internet-capable in another 5 minutes. Set up is straightforward and painless. For those of you who are wondering, several apps come pre-loaded onto the player. Those apps include the following: Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, VUDU, Hulu, Crackle, YouTube, Flixter, Pandora, NHL Vault, WeatherNation, Wild TV, AOL. On, Revision3, Popcornflix, ACC Digital Network, SnagFilms, WealthTV, blinkx, TMZ Video, Break.com, Indaba Music, Billabong, Cult Movie Network, Moviefone, HuffPost Live, CinemaNow, TV Guide, Daily Motion, eHow.com, and several others. Sony Entertainment Network (accessible through the player) also gives you the option to download a number of apps not already installed. The player has web-browsing capabilities, as well as some kind of bluetooth music connectivity - I haven't tried either so I can't say much about those functions. For those of you with small children in the home, the player allows for a number of Parental Control Settings to be customized to your liking. Blu-ray disc playback was impressive. Like I mentioned earlier, I've never owned a blu-ray player, so I can't really offer any valuable comparison analysis. Avengers looked dead-sexy, but take that for what it's worth.

This is a great little blue-ray player. VERY easy to set up to your wi-fi and watch netflix and youtube. Has everything I wanted in a blue-ray player and I don't think I've even watched a blue-ray disk on it yet. Plays DVD's great though.
