I bought this camera for my wife. It compares favorably to my NEX-5N. It doesn't have a touch screen, but that's not a major shortcoming. Has a built in flash and comes with a 16-50mm power zoom lens for significantly less than a 5N without a lens. Doesn't have a viewfinder or the capability to add an electronic one as does the 5N. It uses E-mount lenses, so I can share lenses with my wife, or buy her a lens I want to use, as a gift :). It has numerous shooting modes, few that I use much more than to just to try them out. It does have a couple of my favorite features (turned off by default), focus-peaking, which shows in-focus edges outlined in red, white or blue (I prefer red as it provides better contrast with my typical scene colors than white or blue), and auto-focus with manual fine-focus, especially useful in cluttered scenes, such as through trees, where the camera might want to focus on what you're not wanting it to. If you don't touch the focus ring on the lens, the auto-focus works well on its own the majority of the time.

The Sony NEX3N, and the rest of the NEX series, are great cameras for the budding photographer. The camera is capable of expanding with your creativity and technical skill. The camera uses the Sony e-mount lens, allowing the user to buy new lens to suit their photographic needs. The camera is fairly easy to use, and if you are familiar with cameras it will be very intuitive. For novice users, I recommend that you read through the manual, and look around the internet for photography tips and explanations which will help you maximize your use of this camera. This camera is great for point as shoot, however it really shows it's value in using the various settings to make a great photo.

Not exactly pocketable with the lens attached. But very compact camera with high image quality. Easy to use if you just leave it in intelligent auto mode and let it choose the exposure, focus etc.

So I wanted a camera that would take quality photos and videos but did not want to invest in a DSLR and didn't not want to waste money on a point and shoot. I found someone on Youtube that used this camera in their vlogs and I was sold. I love this lens this camera comes with because it blurs the background of an image if you know how to perfectly place the subject at a certain distance away from the camera. It makes mediocre images look a little more professional. However, I'm disappointed with 2 things. The first, is the annoying shutter sound. There is no way to disable the shutter sound that you hear when you take a photo. It is especially worse when you're on the panoramic setting. The sound is loud and quite obnoxious, and frankly, sound quite fake. So there is no way to take discrete pictures. The second, is that the battery life isn't the best. It's decent, average, etc. Not really crazy about that at all but I don't really mind since I'm no professional nor is photography a hobby of mine.

First off, I take a lot of pictures. Second, I own a Nikon 5100 and have owned a Nikon J1. Third, I travel a lot. I returned the Nikon J1 after a trip to Europe... changing lenses is a pain when you're walking or riding transit systems. I leave the Nikon 5100 at home because it's too bulky to carry around. I purchased an inexpensive Canon Elph to get me by until I could get something else. Turns out the Elph is a brilliant travel camera... small and good enough for anything. I have some history with Sony cameras and have found them excellent, but the small point and shoots I've owned, I outgrew. So when I got a chance to get a Sony NEX3N, I jumped at the opportunity. So far, it has not disappointed. It's still a bit bigger than I care to lug around, but it will suffice as the picture quality (lack of blurs), makes up for the slight inconvenience. So, nothing technical in my rating... just don't want to take blurry, out-of-focus pictures. I also don't like waiting between pictures and I absolutely love to have sharp subjects and blurred backgrounds (i.e. depth of field shots). I'll be traveling more this year, so we'll see how I manage the bigger-than-pocket size of the camera. But look at the benefits I've listed, the trade-off should be worth it.

I am an experienced amateur photographer who researched this camera, wanting an APS-C interchangeable lens camera that was very small. Body is as small as m43 or point-and-shoot, lenses are interchangeable, kit lens is relatively compact for APS-C and has 24mm (35mm equivalent) wide end (not much on the telephoto end). Firmware lens correction controls for contrast and distortion are set to "On" as the default. Lens test website reviews indicate you should not turn these off as picture quality will deteriorate. The 'bundle' came with 8GB memory card, small camera case, straps, and very easy-to-follow instruction book. WalMart price was THIRTY-TWO percent below competitors' before Xmas.

I've been running around camera circuit in search for a camera that I could call worth the money spent. I've purchased DSLR's like Nikon D7000, D90, Pentax K30. But the image quality of this little NEX3n if very much comparable with these slr's. Its very light weight and I liked the cool feature to bounce the flash on wall after pulling the flash spring to shift the angle. Though flash is not very bright but is ok for indoor usage and it works same way as a diff-user. Yes the LCD would not be handy in bright sunlight as its not possible to even look through to compose your shot. So I'll say that its best usage is indoor or in shades. The .jpeg rendering engine that generates the images from the camera does not do justice to the image quality you could produce by processing the RAW images i.e .ARW file format of sony. If you can use some image editing software's like Lightroom, Aperture, DXO then you would benefit better from them. Over all at the price range of $289 with lens, handy cam slim pouch and SD card its worth money spent. You may not get even point and shoot camera in this range. One more thing that is worth noticing is that the ISO noise in image is bit more than that of DSLRs but its manageable if you can post-process them

Excellent way to get into the mirrorless market
11/24/2014

Customer review by Tutt6000

5.0 stars 11/24/2014 by Tutt6000
by Tutt6000

For someone who wants to get into the mirrorless market, this might be one of the best ways you could possibly go, especially with this excellent deal Walmart is offering. The included case (which was designed more specifically for the Sony Handycam) doesn't really fit the camera all that well, unless you're willing to remove the lens & lay it next to the camera each time you store it, and you probably wouldn't want to do that without having first purchased a body cap and rear-lens cap for the included 16-50mm power zoom (these caps aren't included with Sony's package, only the front lens cap is). So to say you can discount the price of a case from the package price to figure out just how good a value you're getting is debatable. The included 8GB SD card, on the other hand, works great. So factoring that in, you could say you're getting the camera with lens for about $280, which if you've looked around online, this is by far the lowest price anywhere on the internet, without trying out scam sites or going refurbished/used. At the current time, you simply can't beat it. And getting into the E-mount system (which is where a strong thrust of the mirrorless market is currently trending toward) at this affordable a price is really a great opportunity. As far as the camera itself goes, the build quality is fine enough overall. It does have a plasticky feel, but the only thing of notable cheapness is the little side door for opening the SD card slot & HDMI/CHG ports. Just be reasonably gentle with it and it should be fine. I haven't had any problems. The body and screen rotating mechanism are all built well, and the rubber grip for the right hand is compact yet very helpful, though more so if you're a 2-handed shooter. And even if you're not, the fact that this camera is so light still makes one-handed shooting very much possible and practical. Image quality & low-light performance are very much comparable among all the Sony NEX 16 MP sensors, so this means you're getting approximately (though not identical) the same color depth, dynamic range, & overall image quality as the NEX-6 (for about a third the cost). Comparing to the 6, yes the 3N gives up a handful of features, like the electronic viewfinder, the higher resolution screen, the higher number of autofocus points, the faster autofocus & continuous shooting, and a few others. But for a lot of people those features won't be missed, especially if you never had a camera with them before! What you gain in return is a camera body that's literally the same size if not smaller as many point & shoots, and for many people this is a huge advantage. All the NEX camera are compact, but the 3N is especially discrete and lightweight. Furthermore, giving up those features the latter models have has led to this camera having rather great battery life. The camera produces excellent images & videos, each in a variety of file formats. The tiltable flash is a huge advantage if you're doing a lot of indoor shooting, because tilting the flash 3/4 or all the way back allows you to greatly improve the aesthetics of what the flash does to your subject, allowing for even lighting that actually makes the flash a truly viable option without being harsh or washing out all your photos. And considering there's no hot-shoe for mounting an external flash, it makes the feature even more important. So at the end of the day, you're getting a lens that costs $350, though can be purchased in bulk packaging on Amazon for closer to $150, so that means you're arguably getting the camera body for around ~$130, and I really don't think there's a camera on the market that can give you this level of image & video quality for that money, and I've looked around quite a bit. This is the smallest camera body [according to Sony] with an APS-C size sensor, and that means you can get great results without the bulk. I am extremely pleased with the NEX-3N, and especially at this price. Highly recommended if you want great output but can live without the extra bells & whistles.

This camera is very easy to use. The price was excellent (on sale for $339 with free shipping). Although the original description mentioned a 16 GB SD card it came with an 8GB card that all other vendors described for the bundle so I was not disappointed. It takes great indoor and outdoor photos with low light and close ups and portraits are especially nice compared to point and shoot cameras I previously used. It has many shooting modes I have not yet tested. Panorama sweep is very easy to use and the results are quite good. Ability to change lenses is a plus and a telephoto lens will be on my wish list.
