Slumber 1 - 8'' Memory Foam Mattress 4.6 5 508 559
Slumber 1 8" Memory Foam Mattress I just moved cross country, and as I left my house on the East coast furnished, I needed a new bed. I didn't move my 2-year old queen size tempurpedic which cost me $2K, since I knew the small spaces of city apartments would better suit a full size. I don't plan on being a long-term resident in San Francisco, didn't want to spend another $2,000 for something I didn't need for more than 5 years. I also wanted to order on-line because delivery is so much more simple -- UPS leaves it on the door step, rather than having to negotiate a delivery with a mattress store. But I waffled for weeks because of the spotty reviews of the product and the Smartbase frame bed. Seemed that most had purchased it for a child. I decided to just go ahead and try it, and I'm delighted, a month into ownership. I like it BETTER than my $2K Tempurpedic, as you don't sink quite so far in-- it is better back support, and there is no morning struggle to emerge from the divet you've created. I'm a good size woman -- not plus, but not a will o' the whisp, so you can be sure that it holds up with a real adult on it. I was a little doubtful about the middle gap in the Smarbase when extended out for the full size, but I took the precaution to recycle the cardboard that the mattress was shipped in to create a base over the frame. No sinking, no slipping. And the smartbase's height created a lot of useful storage for all sorts of things -- you are not limited to just the low-profile underbed storage boxes. I could afford what I want, and could have paid a lot more -- but this was absolutely perfect. Someone must have mentioned something about a smell in one of the reviews. I have a hyersensitive nose, and there was not any sort of lingering problem-- slept on it 4 hours after I unpacked it. I'm just writing review this as an act of mercy to the next cautious customer who cannot make up her mind. You will not regret this. 04/22/2009
Cheap Is Not Often This Good I apologize for the bad formatting, I couldn't get it to look the way I wanted and gave up.We own this mattress in both a full and king size. We bought the full and found it a bit too firm. In addition, the memory foam is not of the quality of a Tempurpedic and some other expensive beds. But it is sooooo cheap relative to anything else, it is well worth the try. This is comfortable and we slept on the full bed version for 2 years then bought another for the king bed when we got it. But this time, we did it with a twist. We purchased this as a base mattress and bought a memory foam topper with a high density and a good softness rating for side sleepers. We used 5 pound foam with an ILD or IFD of around 17.This created the most phenomenal feel. The topper is 3" thick and we don't sink through it, but if you did, you would just hit the next layer of firmer memory foam. The two together make a rather normal 11" thick mattress so regular king sheets, etc. fit fine.We put a mattress pad over the thing and it looks like any other mattress, but man is it comfortable. We sink in and sleep like babies. As an added benefit, if the topper wears out or takes some kind of damage, only it will have to be replaced. The bed is taking no abuse because it is protected by the topper. In addition, the two together would weigh 130 pounds, and I don't want to move a mattress that weighs that much. The topper can be handled separately making it easier to manage. We placed the pair on our new bed with plywood as the base. This works for us because our bed is high, but it may not be for you, so you may need an extra firm box spring. The mattress arrived in a timely fashion, was in excellent shape and was inflated in a day's time to the specified 8". It is amazing how well packed this mattress is. After its release from the packaging, it was straight, perfect king size and makes a great support bed.Our suggestion is try it. by itself first For $300, it is a great base, and not at all a bad mattress. If you sleep well on it, then great, you are done. If not, buy a topper of higher quality and the softness rating you want and you will have a bed better than or at least equal to any more expensive model. And stay away from the auction sites, they have some real questionable folks selling mattresses there. Ask them specifically how much their product weighs and do the math. The topper alone, in our case, weighs about 70. pounds. When I confronted one seller on EBAY about their claim they were using 5 pound foam when the mattress weighed much less than it should, they quickly replied that it was because they used a different process to save money. THEN IT ISN'T 5 POUND FOAM!! And if you pay that much and it doesn't work out, good luck returning something that weighs north of 100 pounds and is fully inflated and no longer in a box.You can return your Walmart purchase at any Walmart, but we doubt you will. And this puppy fits in your car until you get it home.We couldn't be happier. Our total cost for our bed was around $500, including the topper and mattress pad. And it is every bit as good and comfortable a product as some we have seen selling for as much as five times that amount. 07/22/2009
Lives up to the hype of memory foam I don't lay awake anymore in this bed. It might not feel like heaven the second I lay down, but I find I fall asleep quickly--something I've always had a problem accomplishing. This bed is very firm and softens a bit when your body heats up the memory foam. I still wake up in the morning either on my back, sides, or stomach so it doesn't restrict sleeping position like firm memory foam is said to. I'm 25 and don't find this too firm.I would love to try putting a softer 2" topper on top to see how the combination would feel, but I bought this mattress primarily for the value. After a couple weeks one of the corners hasn't fully risen to 8", but I can't notice it while I'm lying on it and it's the corner my head is at.We bought the King size and the only indication that someone else is moving in the bed is a creak from the water bed frame we put this in.We let an identical mattress expand in January in Ohio and it took a couple days to fully reform. We opened this one in Arizona in October and it instantly looked ready. Colder=longer recovery.I've never slept on a Tempurpedic, but I would recommend this mattress to anyone seeking the benefits of a memory foam mattress. 10/31/2009
no more backaches I am disabled and have already had back surgery once but the problem came back. My wife has been complaining for months of waking up with a stiff back. We purchased the memory foam mattress and neither of us has had any back aches since we started using it a couple weeks ago. It came in a box rolled up and took all of about 5 minutes to set up. The smell that is talked about in some reviews was negligible. This is by far the best product for the price that we have purchased in a long while. 04/03/2009
