This mattress comes in a box. The one you will find in-store has wheels and a handle so can wheel it out of the store after purchase. The one you will order from the website comes in a plain box, no wheels, no handles. The mattress is enclosed in plastic, vacuum-packed to it thinnest form, folded in half, then rolled and fitted into a white sack (see picture attached). Be careful when cutting thru the sack, you might end up cutting thru the mattress. Once you set it free from its platic cover, it will quickly suck air and rise to its shape. The mattress emits an odor that may not be suitable for those with sensitivity to smells. The first night I had it, I did not sleep on it and just let it breath. Still, the strong smell filled my apt for at least 5 days! It sticks with everything on the bed, from the sheets, to the pillows, to my jammies. The mattress is supposed to be 8 inches thick, so I measured, and found some areas to be just 7. It has not affected my sleep in any way so I guess this is ok. I think it may take a couple more weeks for the mattress to even out. I'm a side sleeper and this mattress is very comfortable to sleep on. It is not very hard and has just the right amount of firmness. I did not experience back pains as I did from other mattresses. Overall, I'd say this is a good buy, a cheaper alternative to those expensive memory foams.

My husband and I were sleeping on a very expensive bed and we still were not sleeping well it was effecting our work . My husband kept saying we need a new bed and my response was we spent $2500.00 on this air cambered bed that is suppose to help us. Well long story short it took three years and a camper to get this new Slumber 1 - 8'' Memory Foam Mattress (don't tell my husband but I wish I had listened to him earlier) You ask why a camper well.. we got an old camper and it needed a mattress, you don't want to spend a lot of money on something you use three times a year so I bought the 6" Slumber mattress from Wal-Mart for the camper we took our first trip and slept better in the camper then in the $2500.00 bed. And yes another few months went by and I finally said okay to the new Slumber 1 - 8'' Memory Foam Mattress. The first night on the mattress was okay the mattress is a little firm I thought okay I can handle this, but then my arm went to sleep the second night okay this isn't going to work, here we have just spent more money on a bed that doesn't work BOY OH BOY was I wrong the reason my arm went to sleep was because I had slept so hard I didn't move all night by the third night I was sleeping like a baby. The mattress still seemed a little hard I went to Wal-Mart and got a 1.5" mattress topper I think it was about $40.00 wow what a difference. I sleep so good my back doesn't hurt my feet don't hurt and my husband sleeps all night now, he use to get up at least three times in our old bed. So begs the question would I recommend this Slumber 1 - 8'' Memory Foam Mattress YES and resounding YES but get the 1.5" topper if you want it to be a little softer. This mattress is worth it looks cheap but feels great. I can't say enough good things about this mattress.

I just got the twin size for my new daybed/living room sofa. It is serving as the "snorer's exhile" since our old couch was too short for my giant husband. It's marshmallowy soft -love it! My hips and shoulders go numb in the night on a hard bed, so that's why I went with the memory foam (Plus, it had good reviews). Good deal and good mattress, and it fit across my back seat just fine -I got the free site-to-store delivery.

Sleeps like a dream... just as comfortable as a friend of our's REAL Tempurpedic! One word of advice, though.... it's really heavy, and have plenty of room when you unleash it from it's shrink wrap!

Lives up to the hype of memory foam

I don't lay awake anymore in this bed. It might not feel like heaven the second I lay down, but I find I fall asleep quickly--something I've always had a problem accomplishing. This bed is very firm and softens a bit when your body heats up the memory foam. I still wake up in the morning either on my back, sides, or stomach so it doesn't restrict sleeping position like firm memory foam is said to. I'm 25 and don't find this too firm. I would love to try putting a softer 2" topper on top to see how the combination would feel, but I bought this mattress primarily for the value. After a couple weeks one of the corners hasn't fully risen to 8", but I can't notice it while I'm lying on it and it's the corner my head is at. We bought the King size and the only indication that someone else is moving in the bed is a creak from the water bed frame we put this in. We let an identical mattress expand in January in Ohio and it took a couple days to fully reform. We opened this one in Arizona in October and it instantly looked ready. Colder=longer recovery. I've never slept on a Tempurpedic, but I would recommend this mattress to anyone seeking the benefits of a memory foam mattress.

I just moved cross country, and as I left my house on the East coast furnished, I needed a new bed. I didn't move my 2-year old queen size tempurpedic which cost me $2K, since I knew the small spaces of city apartments would better suit a full size. I don't plan on being a long-term resident in San Francisco, didn't want to spend another $2,000 for something I didn't need for more than 5 years. I also wanted to order on-line because delivery is so much more simple -- UPS leaves it on the door step, rather than having to negotiate a delivery with a mattress store. But I waffled for weeks because of the spotty reviews of the product and the Smartbase frame bed. Seemed that most had purchased it for a child. I decided to just go ahead and try it, and I'm delighted, a month into ownership. I like it BETTER than my $2K Tempurpedic, as you don't sink quite so far in-- it is better back support, and there is no morning struggle to emerge from the divet you've created. I'm a good size woman -- not plus, but not a will o' the whisp, so you can be sure that it holds up with a real adult on it. I was a little doubtful about the middle gap in the Smarbase when extended out for the full size, but I took the precaution to recycle the cardboard that the mattress was shipped in to create a base over the frame. No sinking, no slipping. And the smartbase's height created a lot of useful storage for all sorts of things -- you are not limited to just the low-profile underbed storage boxes. I could afford what I want, and could have paid a lot more -- but this was absolutely perfect. Someone must have mentioned something about a smell in one of the reviews. I have a hyersensitive nose, and there was not any sort of lingering problem-- slept on it 4 hours after I unpacked it. I'm just writing review this as an act of mercy to the next cautious customer who cannot make up her mind. You will not regret this.

I am disabled and have already had back surgery once but the problem came back. My wife has been complaining for months of waking up with a stiff back. We purchased the memory foam mattress and neither of us has had any back aches since we started using it a couple weeks ago. It came in a box rolled up and took all of about 5 minutes to set up. The smell that is talked about in some reviews was negligible. This is by far the best product for the price that we have purchased in a long while.

Cheap Is Not Often This Good

I apologize for the bad formatting, I couldn't get it to look the way I wanted and gave up. We own this mattress in both a full and king size. We bought the full and found it a bit too firm. In addition, the memory foam is not of the quality of a Tempurpedic and some other expensive beds. But it is sooooo cheap relative to anything else, it is well worth the try. This is comfortable and we slept on the full bed version for 2 years then bought another for the king bed when we got it. But this time, we did it with a twist. We purchased this as a base mattress and bought a memory foam topper with a high density and a good softness rating for side sleepers. We used 5 pound foam with an ILD or IFD of around 17. This created the most phenomenal feel. The topper is 3" thick and we don't sink through it, but if you did, you would just hit the next layer of firmer memory foam. The two together make a rather normal 11" thick mattress so regular king sheets, etc. fit fine. We put a mattress pad over the thing and it looks like any other mattress, but man is it comfortable. We sink in and sleep like babies. As an added benefit, if the topper wears out or takes some kind of damage, only it will have to be replaced. The bed is taking no abuse because it is protected by the topper. In addition, the two together would weigh 130 pounds, and I don't want to move a mattress that weighs that much. The topper can be handled separately making it easier to manage. We placed the pair on our new bed with plywood as the base. This works for us because our bed is high, but it may not be for you, so you may need an extra firm box spring. The mattress arrived in a timely fashion, was in excellent shape and was inflated in a day's time to the specified 8". It is amazing how well packed this mattress is. After its release from the packaging, it was straight, perfect king size and makes a great support bed. Our suggestion is try it. by itself first For $300, it is a great base, and not at all a bad mattress. If you sleep well on it, then great, you are done. If not, buy a topper of higher quality and the softness rating you want and you will have a bed better than or at least equal to any more expensive model. And stay away from the auction sites, they have some real questionable folks selling mattresses there. Ask them specifically how much their product weighs and do the math. The topper alone, in our case, weighs about 70. pounds. When I confronted one seller on EBAY about their claim they were using 5 pound foam when the mattress weighed much less than it should, they quickly replied that it was because they used a different process to save money. THEN IT ISN'T 5 POUND FOAM!! And if you pay that much and it doesn't work out, good luck returning something that weighs north of 100 pounds and is fully inflated and no longer in a box. You can return your Walmart purchase at any Walmart, but we doubt you will. And this puppy fits in your car until you get it home. We couldn't be happier. Our total cost for our bed was around $500, including the topper and mattress pad. And it is every bit as good and comfortable a product as some we have seen selling for as much as five times that amount.

A Great Product
3/20/2010

Customer review by TheDonovan

I needed a new mattress and could not afford a Temper Pedic. Picked this one because of all the good reviews. Those good reviews were not wrong. It was suppose to be received between Mar 4th & 9th. Rec'd it on March 3rd. Good work Walmart and UPS. My old mattress was picked up on the 4th and so as soon as it was gone I set up the new one. Now I am a 73 yr old great grandma and I was able to pull the "duffel bag" which contained the Slumber 1 mattress onto my box springs, cut it open and lay it out. The odor was strong at first but by today, March 19th it is all but gone. I am using my old 1 1/2 in mattress topper with this mattress. It use to take me the better part of an hour (sometimes more) to fall asleep. Now it takes me approximately 15 mins to fall asleep. I sleep very soundly. I only need 5 hrs +/- sleep and I am now getting that which I wasn't before. I saw on TV that anyone who is a "tummy" sleeper (I am) will eventually have back problems associated with sleeping on your stomach. As I aged I found this to be oh so true. That is why I bought the mattress topper which has really helped. But then needing a new mattress I decided to buy a memory foam one. Great Choice on my part. I actually had "charlie horses" on and off for the past week. I didn't know why but I think... it may be from my muscles not being tense anymore and they were relaxing the way they should be. At any rate they are now gone, I have more energy and feel more alert and I am crediting this to the relaxing sleep I have been getting. I wish I could guarantee you this wonderful experience but I cannot. You will have to make this decision for yourself. I am glad I made the correct decision for myself.

With the bed I have now, every morning we wake up and the fitted sheets have worked their way off the mattress. Very annoying! Any problems with keeping the fitted sheet in place with this mattress? Also, do regular sets of sheets fit these mattresses pretty well?
by KelliAnn11 12/3/2010

  • A. My sheets fit fine. I own a twin, full and queen. Are the sheets pulled off by erratic sleep or basic roll overs. You might want to video tape a night or two to check. I use mattress covers under the sheets. they have a tendency of not being so slick, and I love flannel sheets, again...not very slick. They also make elastic ties that hook on like an old garter belt. They go on the corners under the mattress, at a 45 degree angle. Just google 'sheet suspenders' or 'sheet ties'.

  • A. We put ours on our old box spring and I put the egg crate between the box spring and mattress because our box spring was kind of lumpy. It also kept my bed high, the way I am used to it, but I already had the box spring so there was no cost to me. My teenage sons sleep with their foam mattresses right on slats and have no problems at all.

  • A. Unless you put the mattress directly on the floor, you'll need something. An alternative to a box spring is called a slat-base. Euro-styled beds have a series of slats (about 16 of them) placed perpendicularly to the frame in order to support weight and allow for good air circulation. This arrangement is cheaper and easier to move than traditional two-piece sets: it's comfortable and provides plenty of support. Sets of slats are available for about $20-50 depending on the size of the bed, or they can be made from dimensional lumber. However, it is suggested to think this one out carefully because slat-base beds often have longitudinal center-beams that distribute the weight; on beds larger than twins without the center-beam the slats will probably sag. It is unknown whether your existing bed can be adapted to accommodate slats, but if so you'll be sleeping about 8" closer to the floor. An internet search for "slat base bed" may be useful.
