About this item
Shirley Temple is arguably the most popular and famous child star of all time. Known for her blond ringlets and her ability to sing and tap-dance, she appeared in dozens of films and was Hollywood's biggest box-office attraction from 1936 to 1938. Shirley's popularity and the large gross revenues her films generated transformed the struggling Fox Film Corporation into a major film studio. Sophisticated and by all measures a highly professional performer, Temple had no difficulty upstaging her experienced costar, many of whom were veteran performers. This film collection features "Glad Rags to Riches" (1932) Shirley , as a nightclub entertainer, tap-dances and sings her first onscreen song, "War Babies" (1932) Shirley provides the entertainment in a cafe filled with pint sized GI's, "Kid 'n' Hollywood" (1932) When the show's temperamental star refused to go on Shirley gets her big break, "The Little Princess" - Shirley Temple has never been more endearing than in the role of Sara Crewe, an aristocratic child forced by fate from her home in India to a cheerless London boarding school. Though she is alone and penniless, Sara's wit and charm lead her to fabulous adventures and enduring friendships, "Polly Tix In Washington" (1932) Shirley is hired by unscrupulous politicians to sway the vote of an idealistic senator, "Kid 'n' Africa" (1932) Tarzan must save Shirley from becoming dinner for a group of African cannibals, "Dora's Dunking Doughnuts" (1933) A meek schoolteacher cooks up a perfect scheme to promote his sweetheart's doughnuts: His music class will perform on the local radio show, "Pardon My Pups" (1934) Shirley's brother cares for a ragged-looking expectant dog over the objections of their cantankerous father, and "Shirley Temple - Biggest Little Star of the Thirties": Edited from Newsreels, here's an interesting look at Shirley's life as she attends her first premiere, meets with Will Rogers and visits with Eleanor Roosevelt. Enjoy watching Shirley accept her special Academy Award(R) and drive her own little car around the studio lot.
