The black pen takes the Parker style refill. It&#39;s one of the most comment refills and easy to find.

What type of ink refill does this pen take?

First let me say I'm not interested in a pen the can be used as a weapon, so I have no interest in most pens that are sold as "Tactical".
What I wanted was a sturdy pen that I can carry in my pants pocket or toss in my bag without fear of it breaking and staining everything with ink.
I don't want a pen with features like built in handcuff keys or DNA catchers. I wish the black pen didn't have the window breaker point on it but it's not overly obnoxious so I can live with it.
The black pen fills my requirements better than anything else I've found so far. It has a solid, sturdy build and doesn't have an overly militant look to it.
Everything the previous reviewer said is also true.
It comes with three refills, two blue and a red. The blue that was in the pen when I removed it from the package was already leaking, the second blue had a bur on the barrel and won't even seat properly in the pen and I have no interest in red ink so I tossed all three out before even using the pen.
If you're looking for a solid, sturdy pen and don't mind replacing the cheap refills that come from the manufacturer, then it's hard to beat the black pen.
If you're looking for a pen you can use straight from the box then you might want to look somewhere else.

Black pen only

I purchased two of the black pens, and one of the "gold" ones. Both pens come with extra refills, (one red, and two blue) The refills that come with the pens are total junk. I had one blow up in the black pen the first 20 minutes it was in the pen. Do yourself a favor, and throw them away right out of the package. Replace with genuine Parker pen refills. The black pen can also be improved by removing the pocket clip screws, and replacing with Loctite. They are only sort of tight as it comes. Add an O ring to the body of the pen so the cap compresses it when you screw it back on. It will come un-screwed in your pocket if you don't, (even though it takes 5 full turns to remove the cap! I would prefer if the threads were not as fine, and the cap would come off after only one or two turns. It is a solid pen with these changes. It is much lower key than the "gold" pen. Which isn't gold at all. It is somewhere between a copper and a bronze color. It is a big solid pen. It has a beefy knife type pocket clip that carries better in a pants pocket than a shirt. The pen deploys with only about a quarter turn. I find that the gold pen tends to slip upward while you are trying to write. This pen is fine for just signing your name here and there, but is not really suitable for extended writing. It is VERY conspicuous due to both its size and its color. It also has a very sharp glass breaker, and you will poke yourself from time to time when you reach for it. Both pens are an excellent value give the low cost, and just a few minor changes.
