A masterpiece of mood and heroics, this second film in director John Ford's renowned cavalry trilogy ("Fort Apache" and "Rio Grande" are the others) features one of John Wayne's most moving performances as a cavalry officer in his final week of service on the frontier. Under makeup aging him some 20 years, he inhabits the role of a wily veteran who knows the sting of war and vows to make his last mission one of peace. The ritual of outpost life, the sweep of battle, the advance of the patrol beneath ominous skies: "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon," an Academy Award(R) winner for its color cinematography, paints a memorable portrait of the honor, duty and courage in the finest tradition of the cavalry. And of Ford filmmaking.

In my opinion, "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" is one of John Wayne's best movies. One reason is because John Ford was the director. The color is beautiful, and it's a good, long movie. Well worth the price.

Bear in mind that I have a great affection for this film, the works of John Ford, and many of the cast of this production so my vision may be a little skewed.. This is the 2nd of Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy" (Fort Apache (1948) and Rio Grande (1950) bring 1st and 3rd). John Wayne stars as Capt. Brittles, an aging cavalryman on the verge of retirement, who is given "one last mission" before he does so... His orders are to quell an uprising by the Cheyenne and Arapaho following the defeat of George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn and deliver his commanding officer's wife and niece to an eastbound stage to evacuate to safety. No spoilers, watch the movie! Besides the glimpse at army life on the frontier with obligatory violence, there is romance and humor woven into the script. Typical of Ford's films (since he often worked with the same actors) there is a real warmth between the cast of "older" characters that come from the people playing the roles. Victor McLaglen, Mildred Natwick, and Arthur Shields would also star with John Wayne in The Quiet Man (1952) (another personal favorite of mine). I do have a special affection for the character of (Sgt) Tyree (Ben Johnson), mostly because I know the "go-to southern country boy" type so well (being one). The cinematography is excellent, shot on location in Monument Valley utilizing large areas of the Navajo reservation there, and really does look like a Remington painting brought to life. Do yourself a favor and watch this one!

It would be hard to find a more beautifully photographed U.S. Cavalry film, especially with those magnificent scenes shot at Monument Valley. The sweeping panoramas of the West are captured in full color here, featuring some fine acting performances from the distinguished cast. John Wayne's portrayal of an aging Cavalry officer highlights this nostalgic glance at a part of vanished American history.
