Review by Library Journal (2008-01-01)

Lady Cordelia Bannister, still single at 25, must deal with the engagement her father has arranged between her and Daniel Sinclair, a wealthy American. Independent Cordelia is furious and plans to learn more about her unknown husband-to-be. She ends up passing herself off as her own companion, Sarah, to a man she believes is Daniel's secretary but who is in fact Daniel himself. Unfortunately, many listeners will find that the confusion of identities and misunderstandings turns a promising story into a disappointing one.

The characters are less entertaining than annoying as the tale progresses, with the story line seeming to go in circles. The humor in the dialog is forced, and the (happy) ending seems rushed, even for a Victorian romance. Charlotte Parry's reading is clear and helps establish the atmosphere. This is the third in Alexander's "Last Man Standing" series. Recommended for larger collections only.

Review by Library Journal (2007-10-15)

Dismayed when she is informed that for the good of the family she must consider marriage to Daniel Sinclair, a wealthy American developer she has never met, Lady Cordelia Bannister takes matters into her own hands. Pretending to be Sarah, her companion, Cordelia contrives to meet Sinclair's secretary, Warren Lewis, in order to learn more about her potential husband. But the fascinating man she meets is actually Daniel pretending to be Warren-thus setting the stage for a rare double charade that entangles a delightful pair in its coils and is as charming as it is funny.

Readers will savor the brilliant repartee that sizzles between this marriage-averse hero with a piratical air and the intelligent, outspoken heroine as they banter their way toward the perfect match-and the results of their dual deceptions. Third in the "Last Man Standing" quartet and with links to the e book novella Lady Amelia's Secret Lover (see Xpress Reviews, 9/25/07), Alexander's latest gem is a winner that will leave readers waiting for the finale. Alexander (What a Lady Wants) lives in Omaha.
