No, this is designed to sit directly on the roof of a car.

No racks are required. It goes right ontop of your car.

No its made for cars with no luggage rack. Other wise you would buy a kayak cradle that you use with said rack.

Do I need a rack on my car to use this product?

I drive about 55mph with mine. I haven't driven it faster as I really don't need to. It held great! I turned into my driveway too fast one day and it didn't budge. As long as it's secure you should be okay at any reasonable speed. You will hear vibration noises which are normal. They do make products to lessen vibrations, but have only seen them used with roof racks.

I drove 1200 miles at speeds well over 70 mph. Just keep tightening the ropes and straps.

I'd drive any speed I wanted to go on an Interstate or elsewhere using this rack.
Be real sure it's snug (boing on the straps)
and get better lines to tie it front AND rear, so your knots don't slip-(use a "truckers hitch" for a knot). If it's raining,make sure it's not slipping around on your car roof. Check for tightness at every stop!

I would say yes, it may be difficult to load with just one person. You could probably do it, but you may scratch the paint doing it.

It all depends on the weight of the kayak and your height. I have a 39lb kayak and am 5'3" tall. I lift this by myself. See my photo uploaded onto this website. If you have something stable, like a deck, you can drive the van up close and put the kayak on the van from there. This took me less than 10 minutes from start to finish (including ties).

Aside from having to lift the kayak that high, the only problem might be how to position the through-the-door straps. The strap has to fit behind the driver's head, so to use both straps on a two door vehicle means they will not be placed symmetrically on the kayak, as they would in a four door vehicle.

We were looking for a cheap way to transport our kayak, and this is perfect! The instructions in box don't match the actual items, but it's a simple system... no brainer. Our kayak (a tandem) its secure and we never feel like it's going to go flying. We have to put a towel under the kayak to prevent it from scratching the roof. We highly recommend it!

Inexpensive and effective carrier system

That's pretty much it. I'm not great with knots but once I got the straps tight and my friend to tie the rope, the kayak held solidly to the top of my car whilst I was doing 70mph. No complaints.

Cheap, work well.

I recently purchased this kayak carrier when I recently bought my own kayak from Walmart online. I was using the kayak owned by my in-laws, but wanted to take it to various lakes and rivers. However, I had no way to transport any kayak. I thought since this is only $29, I'd give it a try. If it doesn't work, I can always return it. This works FANTASTIC!! I was completely surprised at how well this stayed in place. I drove about 55mph with it, but not more than that as I don't need to where I have been taking it. The straps are HIGH QUALITY. The utility rope works fine, but really needs two (2) people to tighten it. I did this by myself, it was easy and held very well. Just for extra security and peace of mind, I will be buying 2 more straps to replace the utility rope. These are easily securable and easy to tighten with one hand. This was better than expected!!!

Great Product for inexpensive price!!

My husband convinced me to buy it when I ordered my Kayak from Walmart.com. I was planning on using the pool-noodle trick but got this instead. It is a little pricey, but the blocks will last much longer than a pool noodle and I believe will hold the kayak better. The straps were a bit tricky to figure out. The first review on here from Greatgifts1”was the biggest help of all. We referred to their picture of how to string them up and it was a breeze. It held the kayak very stable going speeds up to 70mpg with no noise or problems. I can load my kayak by myself and I am a 54 year old female. (Yes, that is a kayak on a Smart Car)

Works Great

I have used it on my 2 door car twice now and I am glad I got it. It gets my kayak from point A to point B with no problems. There are a few things I would recommend when using this product with a two door car. An additonal rope for the back end of the kayak just for extra security, make sure the top of your car is dry or the foam blocks will slip, and I do not recommend going faster then 50mph.

Works Great!

Took our kayak up north 3 1/2 hours and it was very secure. To stop the horrible humming noise we put towels under the straps between the strap and the boat which solved that problem completely. Great product for the price.

Love it.

While I wouldn't trust it for long, hi-speed trips, for short jaunts, it's just fine, plus the foam blocks make nice sawhorse storage minimizing deflection of the hull. Good value for the money.

Decent carrier

This product performs as advertized. It could be improved by adding some clips to use for attaching rope to your car. Modern cars have few tie off points. Otherwise it works well.

A good inexpensive product.

This carrier appeared to be well made but there was really no way to attach it to our vehicle. Instruction included stated something about putting hooks on the rain gutter over the car doors. Few is any modern vehicles have such gutters and there were no hooks supplied with the carrier, only what is shown, straps, rope and the foam supports.

Not for our car

Got this prduct to transport ten ft kayak. Bought from site to store, it took two weeks to get to store.They must have shipped it from tawain! I was less than impressed by this set up two cheap straps, foam blocks and a piece of rope. I can understand buying specialized products if they work in this case it does not! Now understand I have not road tested this because I relized it will not work! Now I did set up blocks and strap down kayak it will bend roof before holding tight! Try this instead get rubber mat @ tractor supply $5.50 ft 2ft will work takes place of foam blocks, and strap kayak hull up with your own straps. Remember to also strap bow,stearn. Rubber offers a better surface to cover car top if worried about scratches put movers blanket under it. This setup offers more points of contact. Was alot cheaper $20 with rubber.Got blanket,straps @ Harborfeight$10.
