LawnSoil contains too much fill material

This was all done in early September of 2015 and took 4 weeks. Bought 15+ bags for a major backyard lawn repair. I killed all the Bermuda grass areas and scraped out all dead sod. Then put down an inch (or more) of the Scotts LawnSoil. Seeded with a bluegrass/perennial rye mix and covered with straw. Seed made a good start and I never let it dry out. Overtime the pebbles, clay balls and mulch chips surfaced and most of the new grass died. I will have to redo all this in the spring using a highly screened loam. Spring is a bad time for seeding new grass because of the need for pre-emergence to control the crabgrass. My advise - this is a WAY TOO MUCH work for a homeowner DYI project started in the 90 degree humid weather. Especially for such disappointing results. In the long term hire a qualified landscape company to do this. It is faster, less expensive and guaranteed to be a better result. We would like to apologize for the twigs and pebbles you found in your soil. While some small twigs and bark are an important and necessary part of our soils, they should not inhibit any seed germination due to their size and frequency. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience please contact us to see what we can do for you. Grows some plant that I did not want

I used this on top of regular topsoil thinking why not is was more expensive but it was only a small area. The grass I planted grew Ok (I would not say faster or better than I have seen with plain topsoil and regular watering) But there were all of these other grass like shoots that I did not plant outgrowing my new grass. I am not sure what to do, I guess when the shorter desired grass gets established I will try a weed killer to see if it gets rid of the "bonus" grass that Scotts thought I wanted. I know the undesirable grass was in the soil because it was growing in the bag.

We are sorry to hear of the issues you experienced with the Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil. Our organic products may undergo composting that kills most weed seeds. However, some may remain. We do not sterilize our soils as this would kill beneficial microrganisms that help the growth of plants. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know of this concern and we will pass it along to our Quality Assurance Team. We want you to be confident in our products, this is why we offer a product guarantee. If you would like to further discuss this, please contact us here: http://tinyurl.com/mds8zo5

I bought several bags to overseed my lawn to build up around a large tree with extensive roots into the yard. My only negative is that it tended to be clumpy that took extra effort to break them down. I found no unusual debris such as glass, twigs or anything that I felt should not be in soil. My results were spotty. I am not going to blame the soil or the premium grass seed I used, but rather my level of expertise in doing this for the first time. Also, I live in an area of CA that has watering drought restrictions. I will attempt other areas of my yard and go back and redo some original spots. IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCEED, TRY TRY AGAIN. My experience has been that too often people tend to blame the product rather than their flaws in using it.

I am extremely pleased with this product! The previous owner had let the lawn go and was need of some serious TLC and some elbow grease. I used a thatching rake to get up all the dead build up from what looks like years of neglect. I did a layer of lawn soil, then used Scott's Kentucky blue grass and fescue grass seed, then another layer of lawn soil. Given the clay soil already under the lawn, the previous neglect, amount of erosion over the life of the lawn and crazy temperature shifts we've had since planting the seeds, the lawn looks amazing! I can't believe how well the grass looks. It does take some work, but if you put the work in you get the results. Just a side note, I had quite a bit to fill in and I've used close to 20+ bags of the lawn soil for 400-500 sq ft lawn. Building in some spots close to 2" up to where I want it. It is a great product, and I will definitely would recommend to anyone. Like my old drill Sergeant in the army said when teaching us to some boots, "all you need is a little elbow grease".

I am really disappointed in this product -- followed the directions on the bag, and after the first rain (which was not a downpour), all that was left was a bunch of wood chips and pieces of ground-up plastic and metallic foil. My grass seed was exposed and the birds had a heyday. I am shocked that Scott's would put their name on this. It isn't cheap to buy, but they sure have made it "cheap" with all the non-organic filler, and maybe a moment of silence for whatever "soil" was mixed in to make it look good. What a complete waste of time and money. I will think twice before buying another Scott's product.

    Comment from Amanda - 5/22/2016

We are sorry that you found wood chips in the soil. While small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our soils you should not be finding any large pieces. We also are sorry to hear that you found plastic and metal pieces in the soil. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know about this. We will pass this information along to our Quality Control so that they can look for ways to make sure something like this does not happen again. We do offer a product guarantee and would be happy to assist you with this. Please contact us at your earliest convenience by using the following link http://tinyurl.com/7ag7a3n
