Goodbye 2014 Vegetable and Herb Garden

Sure wish I had read these reviews before purchasing eleven+ 2 cu. feet bags of garden soil and several bags of potting mix from both Wal-Mart and Home Depot. I have always trusted Miracle Gro products but after the mess I've experienced this season I won't ever buy it again. I've mixed the garden soil and potting mix to use in large containers and beds. When I opened the bags I noticed a white fungus (?) in some of the bags and the soil was more wood chips than soil. Since the name on the bag said "Miracle-Gro" I decided to go ahead and use the soil. These are the problems I've experienced in my gardens this year: seeds won't sprout or, if they do, don't grow soil is inundated with grubs sprouting mushrooms soil smells sour I live on a very limited budget and rely heavily on my garden to produce fresh vegetables for my family. This kind of failure is absolutely not acceptable and has been a major drain on my pocketbook. I am so disappointed in this product and am embarrassed that I even referred it to friends who are having the same problem.

Comment from Lee Ann - 7/11/2014

We are sorry to hear about your disappointment in our Miracle Gro soils. Composted soil and mulch by nature can develop mold and fungus. These organisms help break down the organic material so that plants can use the nutrients. Neither fungi nor molds that break down dead organic matter harm growing plants. Sometimes in the moist and dark environment of the package, there will be an overgrowth of these fungi or molds. While it may be unattractive, it does not pose a risk to plants. Once the product is mixed into the existing soil and/or is exposed to sunlight and allowed to dry out, the mold should not be an issue. If you are seeing a white "crusty" formations on the soil (as opposed to a white, fuzzy, or mossy growth) this is usually from naturally occurring salts and minerals in soils. People often get this on the soil of houseplants from minerals and salts in the water or fertilizer that can accumulate on the surface over time. Since the Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables is in plastic packaging, if it is wet, over time the salts are "pushed" through the medium and concentrated on the surface because there's no place else for them to go once they hit the sides of the plastic packaging. It also happens outside in nature (salts and minerals form a top crusty layer), though to a lesser degree in most soils since the soil is not confined to a contained space and there is rain to help flush them and multiple layers of earth to filter them. Compost by nature will develop mold/fungus, some of which will develop mushrooms. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies/reproductive parts of fungi that can naturally occur in all growing mediums. Since there are hundreds of types, there is no way for me to know for certain what type of mushroom is growing in your soil. These naturally occurring fungi help break down the organic material so that plants can use the nutrients in the compost. The fungi that break down dead organic matter do not harm growing plants. As a matter of fact, the byproducts that they release will often help plants to grow. You can simply pull the mushrooms out and dispose of them. Keep in mind that Miracle Gro Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables is meant to be used as an amendment for your native soil and should not be used in containers. The soil is too dense for use in containers and may cause stunted growth. It should be mixed in a 50/50 ratio with native in-ground soil to get the best results. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience please contact us to see what can be done. http://tinyurl.com/7ag7a3n

I should have learned my lesson last year. Had bad experience with this product last year but decided to give it a second chance. Bought the product from a different store. Bought different sized bags at different times. Final result bags that reeked of mold and mildew had mushrooms, mold and other junk growing inside didn't matter what size or when I bought it every bag was the same. opened every bag and left in the sun some for weeks to dry out and kill the mildew and fungus stuff still smelled really bad and Sprayed it with insecticide after opening just in case after problems with spider mites in it last year. I wanted to go pesticide free this year but couldn't take the chance after seeing what was already in the bags from the store I should have trusted my gut and bought a different brand. I love my garden but what good is a product that you have to work over before you feel like it MIGHT me safe to put in your garden? This stuff was once really good go to stuff very disappointed. Ruined all of my hard work- nothing but bark

I built 29 raised beds to garden in this summer. I picked up and hauled over 200 bags of this product labeled 'Garden Soil' to back yard. I am sure I made over 10 purchases to get everything I needed to fill the beds. (No small feat here as I had to negotiate 3 sets of stairs to get to area.) I also bought bales of peat and mushroom compost. This was not my first garden... So, imagine my disappointment (disgust) to discover mulch. No soil whatsoever. No water retention. Nothing to help a poor seed stay moist. I can water it today and need to water again in two hours. Total disaster. Now imagine, paying for the 'premium product' and finding, bark, large roots, some have plastic bits, some smell odd (chemical-gas or oil).... Still, it's Miracle Gro, it has always been good in the past... I have decided this fall I will need to dig it all out and start over with another product! The bottom line is there is no 'soil' in the Garden Soil product. I am so frustrated and disappointed in this product I won't buy or recommend it to anyone. Might even need to Facebook this hot mess.

My Raised Bed Garden Results
8/7/2015

Customer review by Belinda

We built a raised bed garden this year and decided to try filling the boxes with a 50/50 mixture of this product and Top Soil. The Top Soil we used was not a Scotts product. We also added Peat Moss to each box, tilled it evenly, and planted all of the boxes with seedlings I had started this spring. The results have been terrible. To start, the seedlings all turned shades of maroon and started dropping their lowest leaves. I learned from Cornell's website that this showed nitrogen and phosphorus deficiencies. The soil mixture looked very woody to me, and seemed to have almost no pellets of fertilizer in it, so I added straight Urea and the foliage did start to turn a bit greener. I called your customer help line and followed the recommendation of spraying the soil with your MG 10-30-10 and things have improved, as I have applied it heavily each week. I have just emailed my local extension service to see how many soil samples I should send for testing. It's been a terrible experience. Was it my fault or yours? I had asked your customer rep if I should take photos or send a sample. Wish I had done both.

worked very well in established garden to improve quality of soil & improve flowers -but not as good in new vegetable garden

Put in established flower gardens after really tough winter, and when installing the annual drip irritation from rain barrels. In two gardens, was top dressing (1/2 to 1 inch atop existing soil & worked into the top with hand tools) with other gardens, used around roots of shrubs & arborvitae and worked into soil between plantings, then top dressing where established plantings were. Had expected quite a die off, but loss only a few tulips - hostas came back huge - leaves were almost twice their previous size & now more sun tolerant (drip irrigation helps with that), day lilies were easily 4.5-5" tall! Also used in brand new vegetable garden: worked into existing soil at rate suggested on bags, but no great response in this garden : vegetables came up as they had done in every other vegetable garden I've ever had. Were perhaps hardier, but that's hard to determine in a new garden.
