We use this charger at the race track. Most of the other teams use our charger in the pits. Love the digital read out and amount of charge in the battery and how much charge is being delivered.

This is a great product. The instructions and controls can be confisuing, so take the time to learn how to operate it with the instructions in your hands or you may be frustrated. The controls are not "intuitive".

This little machine exceeded all my wants and wishes. My only drawback, it it,s digital. Just a couple of buttons to do all the stuff that it does. Which just confuses me to no end. I have to have the instruction book to follow step by step. I,m more of an old style guy, flip a switch, turn a dial and go. But, after 20 minutes of reading the instruction and then doing, then reading the instructions and doing. It works great.......

I want an automatic battery charger that also has high frequency or other means to restore and maintain batteries.

    • A. I own this charger and I'm charging a battery right now. My experience with it is that it's a very good charger with a comprehensive set of features. I came here looking for information about using the desulfation mode listed in the manual, and found nothing useful here. I looked in other places as well and found nothing anywhere about it. So I just got off the phone with Schumacher customer support (800-621-5485). I was on hold for only 10 to 15 minutes. I pointed out the SE-1555A manual states the following on page 8: Desulfation Mode Desulfation could take up to 10 hours. If desulfation fails, charging will abort, and the digital display will show a failure code of F02 (Bad Battery). I pointed out that nothing else was mentioned in the manual about desulfation and I wanted to know how to make it happen, and how I would know if it was happening. The customer support representative said the following: The charger DOES have a desulfation mode. It will detect automatically if the battery needs to be desulfated (there is no setting to make it happen). If the charger determines that desulfation is needed, the yellow charge LED will blink (normally the yellow LED is solid during the charging process). The desulfation could take up to 10 hours, after which it will automatically switch back to the charging mode (with a solid yellow LED), and then charge the battery as normal. If the charger is unable to desulfate the battery, it will give the error code F02 as listed in the manual. So there you have it. This charger will desulfate, and it will do it automatically. Just look for a blinking yellow LED to see if its happening, and add up to another 10 hours to your charging time.

    • A. No but any battery will charge if the plates are not stuck together or there is no damage to the posts. I always say if the battery is old ' "VS" the time and money for a new charger. It's much better to buy a new battery at wal-mart.

    • A. Well the book says it has a "desulfation mode" but don't say what that is exactly. Just that it will detect and automatically try and restore a sulfated battery.

    • A. Yes it does . However it is not a good choice becouse it has a tendency to run hot . I have had it for a couple months and don't like this charger at all.

    • A. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind your question. Batteries are DC by nature. They are charged with DC which has no "frequency". The most critical factors in battery chargers is their ability to charge a battery quickly (more amps) with overheating it. This is accomplished by sensing the voltage of the battery as it is being charged. This charger is the most reliable I've owned. I owned the smaller model which lasted about 15 years and decided to try a larger one.

    • A. Of course it'll charge a diesel pickup. As for starting, well it depends how dead your battery is (or batteries, most diesels have 2)... might have to let it charge a bit first to get enough juice into the batteries, then use the engine start feature to assist the batteries especially if it's cold out

    • A. yes, it will and it would be great for this purpose. but to charge a dead battery it takes 4-5 hours on 55 AMP becouse it is intermittent.

    • A. Charge yes, as for jumping a completely dead system not likely on a large diesel they require large amounts of AMP which is the reason they have two batteries best bet is to have and use a decent jump pack along side the charger if it is needed. my dedicated jump pack will start a ford diesel alone in the winter with no problems. BUT if using the jump feature charge the battery for around 10 min before attempting to use the jump start feature. this will help in your decision http://www.batterychargers.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductName=94040020
