I used this water bottle in Haiti and not only did it clean my water I could have a lot of it. The cap over the straw also kept it clean. I could not have asked for a better water bottle, infact I am recommending it to anyone who is going on a mission trip or traveling to a place that has unclean water.

Simple, Self-Contained and Effective

My son went on a 3-week volunteer trip to a poor, remote village in the mountains of Ecuador. Being limited on how much gear and clothing he could carry in one backpack, I bought this bottle filter from my local WalMart store as an alternative to a separate and heavier hiker-size pump filter I already own. As it turns out, the Sawyer filter bottle was rated to remove even smaller organisms than my $100+ pump filter. He used it everyday during the day instead of lugging bottled water, filling it from wells, a stream, even an irrigation canal, and experienced no illness. He said it worked well. Unfortunately, he left the bottle behind to make room for souvenirs. But I will definitely buy another one for backpacking or an emergency kit.

Great product

We purchased two of these for a trip to Haiti. Other members of our group purchased another very popular brand. The Sawyer was easy to use and much more convenient than the squeeze bottles that others in our group used. The water tasted great!

  • It needs to be pushed through the filter so yes, it has to be sucked out. Or squeezed out also. If you're interested in filtering water for cooking, Sawyer sells pump/bucket kits for filtering mass amounts of water.

  • you have to suck the water out but there are directions to hook it up to a bladder such as camelbak. If you are cooking, you realy dont need to filter, just boil the water.

  • Good question. In it's basic form the answer is no because the bottle doesn't squeeze. But you are provided with connectors to put the filter outside the bottle or create an inline filter using a Hydration Resivoir such as walmarts Outdoor Products brand 2.0 liter one.

  • The filter is capable of gravity feed but the bottle is made of hard plastic and the filter is at the bottom, so it cannot be pored out per se. I attached my to a bladder hose and use it as a gravity feed filter and that worked very well.

  • The water is poured out either by removing the spout or turning the lever on the spout to the "On" position while in a low position. It operates by the force of gravity.

Most purifiers especially those with a pump specify how fast they can filter water. You don't say anything about how long it will take to filter a liter or a gallon of water if I used it to fill up a bladder. Would you please answer that. Thank you
by an anonymous customer 9/30/2009
  • As fast as you can suck. You are the pump.

  • The reason this doesn't give a flow rate is because it does not give a stead flow, in its purchased condition it must be sucked out and the speed it will come out is dependant upon the force you apply to the straw. I will say in gravity fed configuration attached to a bladder hose I was able to filter about a gallon in a couple of minutes, I was very satisfied.

  • I don't think it works like you are thinking. You could hook this up in-line with your bladder hose and then sip through it. I don't think it's designed to work as a gravity filter. You have to sip kinda hard to get water through the filter. This is more a dip-and-go type of device. If you're looking for a lightweight, inexpensive setup for a gravity filter, check out the Aquamira Frontier Pro. I believe it can filter 0.5 water/min with no pumping in a gravity configuration. Note that no filter removes viruses, and many will allow smaller strains of bacteria to get through (E.Coli can be under 1 micron). For absolute protection you still need to treat with tablets for 1/2 hour. But this was not an issue for my son in Ecuador.
