  • A. I had to contact their 800 number and once I told them what box it was and the numbers they needed from it's setup screen it loaded all my channels and was up and running in about 10 minutes. I had more problems getting the guide to work becuase I forgot to complete the setup as far as telling it my zipcode and provider, once I did that the guide also loaded and worked.

  • A. No, Yes and Yes There are three catagories of Cable TV service that this STB can utilize. Depending on what services you want from the Cable Company, will depend on the answer. 1. Clear Channels (No). Most Cable Systems have between 2 and 30 channels that do not require a CableCARD. This STB can be used to "Scan" the cable system for these free (un-encrypted) channels, and you can watch those channels without renting a CableCARD, Similar to any HD TV with an RF input. But you will need to be a Cable TV customer to get the Cable Feed to start with. Examples are ABC-HD, NBC-HD, CBS-HD and PBS-HD. 2. Encrypted Cable (Yes). These are channels that are encrypted and require a CableCARD to be installed and ("Bound" / "Paired" / "Authorized") with your STB. You will need to call your Cable Service provider to request a CableCARD and there will be a rental fee for the CableCARD (less than the cost of renting a Cable Box from most Cable Companies). Some Cable Systems mail you the CableCARD with an installation guide, others will require the CableCARD be installed by the Cable Company (and they may, or may not charge you a fee for this service). Examples of channels are ESPN, TNT, HBO, Showtime etc. 3. Encrypted Channels (Yes) using Switched Digital Video (SDV). Some Cable Systems (i.e., Time Warner, Cox Cable) use a technology that requires a "Tuning Adapter" be installed to recieve "the rest" of your channels. In these Systems about 50% of the encrypted channels are always there, the other 50% are "switched" and require a Tuning Adapter to watch these channels. The Tuning adapter connects the Cable system just like a STB but is also connects to the STB using USB Cable. Together, the two devices give you access to all channels (you pay for). The Tuning Adapter will be provided by the Cable Company. Each company can choose to charge a fee, or not. In most cases so far, there was no additional charge.

Charter Cable is going completely digital. You will soon need a Cable Box for every TV to receive anything. Their cable boxes are $7.00 per month each. However, this box works with a cable card, that costs $2.00 per month to rent and gives most of the functions of a standard box. I bought two of these for the TV in a bedroom and for the TV in the basement. Setup was a pain. The people at Charter could not pair the cards in the boxes with their system. They had to send a tech to my house to walk the central office people through the pairing process. Once they did that it worked flawlessly. The guide function works through my broadband internet connection and works fine. I am receiving all of the channels that I am paying for. What this box will not do is pay per view or on demand. The box will also connect to Netflix and other services through my broadband connection. That also works well. I have not been able to figure out how to add apps for other services to the box though.

The box works great with Comcast, and has a bunch of extra apps and widgets, plus Samsungs version of Pay per view. The guide looks nice and is very basic with a description, time left in program bar, and no ads. It doesn't show if the program is new or a repeat. The box can forget the guide for a bit after being off a long time but seems to come back after a few minutes of loading or a power cycle. The internet extras are cool and the video quality is just as good as my original box. They aren't charging me for the card here but do charge 9.95 a month digital outlet, your provider may be different so be prepared. Happy with it for the money paid and would be a great solution for those with a newer HDTV and wanting to drop their box rental or ad a box to a extra room. Box also only works with HDMI so another thing to keep in mind, it does have a optical out jack as well for those needing it. Happy with it so far and hoping Samsung keeps supporting and updating it to make it even better.

Samsung Cable Box, easy to use, 1080 resolution is excellent and I don't have to pay rent every month, WHOA!! A little tricky getting the match up from the Cable company, Brighthouse Networks. Ended up getting a tuning adapter as well as a Cablecard. The only problem is I typically lose channels and have to reboot the tuning adapter. I have heard of others with the same problem. The Samsung box sometimes goes to sleep and won't wake up, I reboot the whole thing. Those episode's are not as frequent now and it does appear the more you use the box the better. I have mine in the bedroom and it only gets used late in the evening. I started turning the box on after work to kind of let it warm up. My Amazon and Vudu movies come in bright and clear, no problems. It is about time we as consumers were able to buy our own equipment and not held hostage by the Cable Companies. My rental Cable box bill went from $20.00 a month to $2.95 for my Card, the tuner is free at Brighthouse.

I purchased this unit to use with Frontier FIOS and have not been able to get the resolution of the HD channels to display at the higher resolution. All channels show 480i and it's cropped on our HD TV but only for this unit. So far all parties have their fingers pointing at each other. Doh! Hint - Take a picture of the back of the MCard before you plug in the card to the box. When you call the activation line, tell them you have a NEWER CableCard and it's most likely not in their system. If technical support is still open, they can help the activation folks add the card but I believe tech support shuts down at 8 AM PT. The folks will ask you for a HostID and Data, etc but will not know where it's located with this unit. They only know Tivo. On the remote, click menu and go to Settings-Broadcast-CableCard info and scroll down to the CableCard parring option. There, you'll find the information they need. If they say this HostID was previously used, they will ask you to unplug the MCard and plug it back in to refresh the information. If successful, they will want you to perform a scan for the channels. The scan feature is located in the setting-broadcast section.

Love The Box

I really love this box I have time warner cable it cost $2.00 a month to rent a cable card and the tuner adapter is free. No problem getting every thing setup time warner has the cable card thing worked out very well. I get a beautiful picture and I wired the internet using an Ethernet cord connection because I had problems with the wifi staying connected. The only down side I have is that there is no app for hulu Plus. So if you are a member of hulu plus this box will not have an app for it nor is a way for to add the hulu app to the hub it is not hulu plus compatible. Majority of the apps that come with it are pointless but maybe some day they will add more apps for now I mostly use Netflix and Vudu. The blue ray player works wonderful too.
