  • A. If you mean DATA - Yes .. applications as in installed software that was installed on say Windows XP and you are currently using Windows 7, then - NO. Applications have to be for the most part in the registry or installed on the current operating system ... you cannot just pull off programs from another drive, if it came from another PC using a different operating system and separate registry.

  • A. It depends on the applications. If they are standalone apps, then yes, but most of them won't since programs require to be installed in the registry of the current operating system, and since this hard drive is probably from another computer they will not work.

  • A. Macintosh, Yes! Windows (all versions), it depends. Windows uses a "registry" to guide all programs' behavior. If you install a program using the external drive while connected to the Sabrent USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Hard Drive Converter, the registry will go there to look for the program. Now if it is data only that you want to keep on the extrernal drive with the program installed to your internal C drive, you start the program and while in the application, go to the preferences and point to the data on the external drive. (ie., Windows Media Player installed to C: internal drive can find all the songs and play them from the external while it's plugged in. Once the external drive is unplugged, Windows Media Player will still operate but will only see all the songs on the C: internal and will give an error (or skip over) any songs it can no longer find on the unplugged external drive.)

  • A. The box contains power adapter plus the Sabrent and all necessary connecting cables. There is no case or dock for the HDD, though -- the SATA HDD being used just sits on your desk (or if it is still in its original desktop computer tower, leave it there and simply change out the power supply and data connections).

Easy to hook up to my old hard drive. Lights on converter let me know that the hard drive was powered and working. Read all of my data off the old hard drive and saved data to the new computer hard drive. Enough attachments to make any brand of old hard drive work.

I thought the adapter would fit onto the HDD one way, and it didn't; it turns out I had to plug one of the small cables into the adapter and the other end onto the SATA HDD. The directions don't tell you this! You just open the small box and confront a bunch of small connectors for power adapters, data adapters, and incomplete (summary) directions. Going very slowly, I realized the pieces (for both power and data) were shaped so they would only assemble in the right way. Once I got that, I assembled them in the order the directions did give, and by gum it worked! My laptop recognized the device, read the table of contents of a disk that I thought was damaged (old desktop had failed to boot when this HDD was in it). One scary moment when laptop froze & had to restart after trying to read files, but it turned out ok -- on second try, all files I looked for were there, all copying to D: drive on laptop (from this adapter/old SATA HDD as F: drive) worked very quickly.

Bought this to try to salvage some data from the EIDE hard drives in my old computer that blew a mother board. The replacement AMD quadcore Acer has only SATA drive interfaces, and this looked like the best option. Note that you can read both EIDE/IDE and SATA drives with this adapter through a USB port and it comes with a seperate power supply so you wont overload the USB buss. This is plug and play with win7. Tested this with 4 drives, three EIDE and one CD/DVD. Two of the EIDE drives were dead, and win 7 did not recognize them. It recognised the third EIDE drive but the MBR [master boot record] was corrupted. It also recognized the EIDE interface CD/DVD drive. No case, but this will allow you to use surplus EIDE/IDE drives or less expensive SATA drives for backup. Also worked with my AMD dual core laptop.

doesn't power a 750gig sata 2

I heard with other adapters that you needed a power source if it was above 500 gigs so I purchased this product. Unfortunately this does not work with my sata 2 750gig drive.. Doesn't even turn it on... Therefore I do not recommend this or large hard drives. If other people got this to work on their 750 gig drive then this device must be a hit or miss. Other then this major problem the device looks to be of good construction and would recommend it for those whose hard drives it may work on. The manufacture needs to state the capacity this product can handle instead of insinuating it can handle all sata devices regardless of size.

Over the years I had collected a number of desktop and laptop computers that stopped working. I needed to get the data off the hard drives before I recycled the computers and this device worked perfectly!! The instructions that were included with the device were very brief but i found much more detailed instructions on the Sabrent website, with pictures. Very nice!

The processor was going bad on my old stand-by computer, and I was looking for a good way to utilize the hard drive in it. This hard drive converter was the perfect solution. I was able to transfer my files to my new computer, and at the same time, I now have an external hard drive that I can use for extra storage. Set up is simple, and the price was right.

I needed to test several hard drives and bought this mainly for the price. The device worked with all the hard drives tested. Cables for connecting to hard drives could have been longer but you can get longer ones separately. All in all a good product that still works presently.
