    • A. The Roku box itself only has the one-time purchase fee. Some of the channels require a subscription (like Netflix, Hulu, the sports channels, etc.) and some offer subscription-free programs (mostly religious, news, political, special interest, etc.) It depends on the channel but you can check the "Roku Guide" website for a list of the public (free) channels. http://www.rokuguide.com/channels/public-all-az

    • A. Roku machines are a form of "tuner", there no monthly subscription cost for the Roku. There could be a monthly subscription cost for the stuff you watch. For example, streaming Netflix will cost you, but the free Pandora or Hulu will not cost you. However, the better Pandora & Hulu stuff (of course, it depends on what you think is better) will cost you something. Most offer a trial period so you can try it out and then decide if you want the "Pay" stuff.

    • A. yes, will stay paused forever. If you turn off tv and turn back on later it goes to where u were before, even if u are in the middle of a movie. You can put stuff in favorites or queue with remote on different channels that u put in your fav. or add to it from store. some are free, some are not. Lots to do. If u want to play certain angry birds game must get most expensive remote/box. There are games on the others that u can play with their remotes, even some angry birds.

    • A. Yes, it has both forward, pause and rewind buttons. However, like any streaming video, it will have to rebuffer once you fastfoward or reverse. Only takes a sec, though. There is also a "replay" button for the live channels like NHL that hops back 5-10 sec for an instant replay of the action. Usually this doesn't require a rebuffer.

    • A. It comes with standard RCA cable and power brick. You have to supply your own Ethernet and HDMI cable. Power brick length is probably around three feet and same with the RCA cable.

The Roku XS is very reliable. I also have an Apple TV, and definitely prefer the Roku player over the Apple TV. The layout (i.e., viewing options) is subpar compared to the aesthetics of the Apple TV; however, it easily gets the job done. I primarily purchased the Roku player to use Amazon's Instant Video since Apple will not house movies in their cloud. So far...no regrets.

At first I was a bit disappointed, it took me some time to aquaint myself with how to work it properly. However, installation was fast and very easy. After a bit of exploration and finding the channels available to me I have found that I was able to disconnect my cable tv thus saving me several hundreds of dollars over just the 1st year, let alone suceeding year. One must be aware of their tv habits before totally relying on ROKU as a source of television. I suggest that you actually go to ROKU.com and compairing it it cost wise to what you actually currently use. And, you can add an antenna to pick up local stations if your tv is current with a built-in digital converter, without a converter box. The model I purchased is XS Roku2 and would do it again in an instant. I did hear they are releasing a new verison which is wireless and plugs into a flash port on a computer, however my understanding is that it is the standard version of Roku, worth watching for, if it is the advanced unit, I will be the 1st in line.

Bought this for my husband for Christmas. Was hesitant to buy this model as others indicated they had problems due to their TV techology. Fortunately our computer savvy son was home to help us install it. Appararently when you begin the installation process the device looks for software updates and begins to install them. Unfortunately there is nothing that appears on your screen to tell you that this is what is going on. So we thought there was a problem with the wireless connectivity. To make a long story short, approximately 1.5 hours later we had the product up and running. If my husband had been working on this alone he would have given up after 15 minutes and would have taken it back. We love being able to stream movies and watch shows from the Internet and have had no problems with that. So its working they way its supposed to-- just know the setup takes a lot of time AND it pays to have someone with you who understands the technology.

PROS: ~A lot of apps ~Low power consumption ~Easy set up ~Affordable ~Ethernet or WiFi support CONS: ~Always on, no way to turn off besides unplugging from power source. ~A little too high in price for this version. REVIEW: This thing is great, use it on a daily basis. I live in an area that not possible to get cable and have an obstructed view for satellite. But with this media streaming device I can now watch TV again. Granted not like live TV, but Netflix, HULU+. Also catch up on world wide news with other apps. So for $100 and around $40 a month is subscription fees (MLB.tv, Netflix, HULU+) this is saving me money if I did have the option for cable/Satellite. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is trying to save a little bit of money! Yes it does require an internet connection (10Mbps or higher for HD Quality) to work, read some in the Q&A area where people were not sure if it did or not.

I purchased the Roku XS to obtain entertainment for my home, and to save money by reducing my monthly Comcast cable expense. My monthly Comcast bill escalated to $ 145.00 for internet and digital cable. I had considered a Roku unit for sometime to reduce my entertainment costs. I have switched to basic cable, which also greatly reduced my cable box rentals for 4 tv's - and am now paying $ 62.46 total to Comcast monthly. I added Netflix streaming for $ 7.99 for a monthly bill of $70.45 total. So, other than the "basic" channels - everything is "On Demand" - which actually works out far better for me. I used some of the savings to buy an additional Roku XS for my son and to hardwire my network throughout the house for the best download speeds. This works, and I have not looked back. The setup of the Roku XS could not have been simpler. It totally installs, configures, and updates itself. With Windows 7, you start the process, fold your arms - and watch. There are some very cool channels on the Roku, as well as a lot you might not be interested in - but no worse than cable. This technology is mature, works well, and I wish I had made the jump far sooner. Get the XS model! Highly, recommended!!!

My Roku was extremely easy to set up.I have cut the cable cord and will save a lot of money. You will need internet service for the Roku but that is it other than paying the small fee of aprox $8.00 each for netflix ,Amazon,Hulu per month if you decide to suscribe to them, plus there are a lot of free movies and tv shows. My cable bill went up $217 per month for the bundle of phone,tv and internet or $2600 per yr. I don't miss cable at all I have the internet for the local news ,I plan on purchasing an indoor antenna for the local stations. I certainly don't miss all the ads that cable force us to pay to watch and all those stupid reality shows. With Roku I can watch what I want when I want without paying some big cable co. I believe Roku is the way of the future,it is high time we put the big cable and satellite companies in their rightful place, they have become too greedy.

This is a great little gadget. It works as advertised and is about the size of a doughnut. The sensitivity is good - it receives an excellent signal from my wireless router about 60 feet away(It works either wired or wireless) The remote is simple and well designed. I have used the composite video out cable supplied and get a clear picture. The HDMI cable is not supplied and I have not used that output yet.

USB port for external drive plays mkv files and others. Can use a pen or disk drive. Setup was fast and easy. Wifi saves time if you don't want to wire to a new location, but can be hard wired if need be. Motion sensor remote like a wii remote. Comes with free angry birds which is a blast to play on the tv. Lots of options for adding free channels from the store good Christian programming available. Perfect gift for family fun. Internet connection required. C.C. Required in case you want to purchase channels or apps that are not free. Wish it didn't require a c.c. On file to register, it's really not necessary for most people I would think. Stays powered on. There is no off switch. Doesn't get hot AT ALL, so nothing to worry about.

Theses days many Blu-ray players or TVs have internet streaming ability built in to watch free or pay internet content. However they don't have the selection that these Roku boxes have. Roku has the most content of any dedicated or embedded streaming device except for Vudu, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. I hope Vudu will add a Roku channel shortly to make this an almost perfect streming device. I say almost since the one other disadvantage of the Roku is that it doesn't play content on your home network "out of the box". There are ways you can configure the Roku and your home network to play local content, but since most people are not interesting in playing internet content, this isn't a deal breaker. As far as the device itself, the Roku 2 XS is currently, as of Nov 2011, their top device. It has a Wii like controller/remote that allows for game play and normal on screen navigation—get ready to spend hours playing the included Angry Birds. Other than the remote, the XS has an ethernet plug to allow this device to be connected directly to your router. If you have a good wireless network at home you can use the wireless capability of the XS or the cheaper versions of the Roku that don't have the ethernet plug. I always like to have a "wired" internet connection for my devices if I can since it removes the "wireless" variable if something isn't working. The XS only has an HDMI plug, so if your TV or receiver doesn't have an HDMI input available you'll need to buy their cheaper versions. The XS also has a USB and microSD Flash memory ports, which can allow for more memory for channels and allows you to play videos on these drives, however, the video has to be format in specific ways to play back on this device. If you just want to try out internet streaming sitting in front of the TV instead of the PC or if you want to cutdown on what you are paying for cable tv this is the best value for a dedicated internet streaming device if you don't need Vudu and if you are not worried about playing media that is on your home PCs or network.
