    Roku Streaming Stick

Greatest thing since cornbread. I already had the Roku 3 and got the streaming stick for my living room TV which is 10 years old, but did have the HDMI plug in. I am loving it. I am a TV fanatic and tried this because cable was too costly. Believe me, I am receiving so much more than I ever got with cable and cannot believe what I am getting. The remotes are amazing because I can pause a show/program, and watch something else, and a month later go back to the show I paused or I can replay it, I am amazed. I was paying $85 for internet/phone and $130 for cable, and all I now pay is $85 and $8 a month, for 31,000 movies, actually it is even more because I get even more TV programs (Separate from movies). I save $1440 a year. I just did not realize how much free stuff was out there and I am a truly happy camper. Cable companies are going to be coming after Roku and its streaming competitors. HAHAHAHAHA - the laugh is on cable companies for giving me the opportunity to learn about this. Already recommended it to more than 15 people.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE 6 YEARS MAKES

I have for over 6 years used a Roku, in fact the one I still have still works great, it happens to be one of the first models they offered to the public. I have been looking for something to watch YouTube on other than my computer. I spent a great deal of time researching products such as Chrome stick and several other devices and figured for once in my life to stick with what has been serving me well for a long time; Roku. I know all the promises from the many products out there say they will play YouTube or allow you to fling from your smart phone to your larger TV and they may well work, but this product works fantastic, and no you do not need a smart phone with this product to view YouTube. It has an application just like other channels. Set up was easy and almost plug and play. The new graphics in the menu take a little getting use to but are very well put together. The video playback is excellent with 0 buffering. For the money you can't go wrong. Face it if a guy my age can set this up with 0 problems then anybody can use this.

I had a Roku 3 already and really like it - I needed another Roku for the bedroom TV and wanted to be able to "hide" it better. I was apprehensive about device speed since the streaming stick is so much smaller, but it's been great. The remote is a big bonus. At this price, I can afford to put one in every room of the house! So pleased.

    • If you have a smart phone or tablet.. just go to your Google Play store or your iTunes Store and search for roku remote... it will link right up to your device and you can use your tablet or smart phone as the remote. No need to buy a new remote! :)

    • You can buy remotes online pretty cheap actually. Just Google Roku replacement remote for sites that sell them. Other options that you can use in the mean time Roku remotes universally from other Rokus you may own, even if they are a different series. You can also download a free app for android phones and tablets (not sure about ios) that is a remote. It works as long as your box/streaming stick is connected to a wireless home network.

    • Roku DOES SELL REMOTES. Absolutely, they sell remotes! The answer that says you have to buy the whole package over again is WRONG. See my other answer to this question about how to get a replacement remote! The odd thing is my answer containing the link to buy a new remote was posted DAYS before the person posted their incorrect information. You do NOT have to buy the whole thing again, just buy the replacement remote! READ MY OTHER ANSWER!

    • Hi Maggie, They used to have a channel where you could buy things like remotes in a Roku shop. Now they only sell them online. Of course with no remote you can't shop in the shopping channel anyway! If you copy and paste the following link you'll see where you can buy a replacement remote. If you have the HDMI version of the Streaming Stick you want the fifth remote down on the current page. https://www.roku.com/accessories (If the above link doesn't work, just go online and login to your account at Roku.com, then scroll all the way to the bottom of the Roku home page where the user menu is actually located and in the far right column labeled "SHOP" click on ACCESSORIES. It is the 3rd link down in the Shop menu.) Until your new remote arrives if you have an iPhone or Android smart phone you can use it to control your Roku. There are free apps in the app store you can install that controls your Roku right from your smart phone. I use the iPhone app and it works great. The smart phone app is an instant solution! And now you have the link to order a replacement remote. Hope this information helps you out and you get that Stick back to streaming pronto!

Also what does it cost to set up an account the first time?
    by Fred-O 10/9/2014
    • It is free to set up. Only cost is to buy unit. Only cost is through Netflix, Hulu, etc. if you want to access these.

    • You do not have to register with a credit card if you call and tell them you do not want to. They can walk you through the process. I registered mine without one.

    • It cost nothing to set up Roku you do need to give them a credit card number. Some of the Channels cost so be careful you really want the channels that cost.

    • The access to Roku is free, no initial or continuing costs. Some of the channels and movies require subscriptions or one time payments, but there are many free options as well. I believe all of the pay options and free options are the same options you can have on your computer today (try PBS, Fox, Crackel). The device connects your TV to the internet with easy to follow on screen point and click channel options.

    • No, you do not have to renew it every year. There is no cost for Roku account. You are only charged for channels that you subscribe to that are not free.

    • No, you do not have to renew it annually and there is no cost to set up a Roku account.
      by abbynonymous2/15/2015
Was this answer helpful? (13) (0)
    • Nope. Your Roku account is free for life. No renewal fees. You can add and watch all the free Roku channels you want. In fact I urge you to do that before adding any subscription channels. That way you can find out what free channels you like and will actually watch instead of just binge watching Netflix and/or Amazon Prime all the time. If you do that you are going to miss some good programming and never find some of the better free ones. There are so many free special interest channels it takes a while to find the ones you like best. You do have to pay for premium subscription channels. Some you pay monthly, some annually and some are one time fees for life. But if you don't add any premium subscription channels it is 100% free after you buy the Roku box. One hidden delight of owning a Roku is the abundance of good music programming. Music sounds fantastic on a Roku! Remember when MTV actually showed music videos? You can find channels like that on Roku! The music channels on a Roku sound better than on a good FM receiver! Almost all of the music channels are free. There are over 150 of them.

    • No cost to set up an account with Roku, and you have access to all of the free channels for free. You are only charged for the channels that you subscribe to that are not free (ex. Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon, etc.). We have 3 Roku's and love them all. The stick is great!

    • I haven't ever been charged anything. You may have to pay individual subscription fees depending on the channel you choose from the channel store. But there are plenty of cost-free channels, although some will pepper you with advertising.

    • It is really free. You do have to give them a credit card number, but they only charge it if you buy paid apps. There are plenty of free apps; I have never needed to buy one.

    • A Roku account is free. Now if you install premium subscription channels you pay for those. You can watch all the free channels and never pay a cent. I've had my Roku 3 years and an account is FREE but you have to buy a Roku of course. It is a good device!
