    • A. Not for Roku, but for any accounts you have streaming to it - so you might end up with a Hulu Plus or Netflix as a month bill (of ~$10 a month...not bad compared to cable!)

    • A. Only if you subscribe to channels like Netflix. If all you do is stick with the free channels, then no. Whatever you pay for the device will be all you pay.

    • A. Roku doesn't charge you monthly but if you subscribe to a streaming service like Netflix or HuluPlus, they will charge you a monthly subscription fee. There are "channels" you can access on Roku that do not charge monthly as well.

    • A. No, cable service is not required. You must have wireless internet access though. If your internet access was provided by your cable company, you'll need a new provider.

    • A. No you do not have to have cable to use a Roku. You do however need high speed internet service. Anything over 1.5mbps will work but if you want to watch HD movies in 1080p you'll want a 5mbps DSL level of service. The faster your internet service, the better. There are a handful of channels such as HBO-GO and the new FOX channel that require you to have a cable TV account subscription to their channels before you can get the ROKU content for those channels. There's enough to watch on Roku without those few cable subscription dependent channels though.

In an effort to discontinue paying for poor programming I simply don't watch and enjoy a more flexible way of selecting programming of interest, I decided to give Roku a shot. Fortunately, the experience has been great! Essentially, you're transferring programming found primarily on the internet onto your television. While some would prefer to simply watch programming on their computers, having the option of viewing on a larger screen (for a reasonable price of $50) is hard to beat. Although the LT is considered "entry level", a close comparison will reveal there's not a great deal to be gained by falling for the bells and whistles of the more expensive units. Each of these players provide very extensive programming options and well over 600 channels. While membership fees are required for some programming (Netflix, Amazon, etc.), the monthly cost is minimal per membership. Assuming you have a means by which to watch free local channels (digital tuner, etc.), I don't really think much is lost by cutting the cord and freeing yourself from overly expensive cable and satellite services.

I have been using my computer to watch a large portion of my TV for quite some time and it was an acceptable alternative to cable or satellite service, however it did have it's short comings. Then my sister bought a Roku player and I was so impressed that I immediately bought one myself. There are an amazing number of choices out there, some free, some that are available by subscription and still more that are available at reasonable pay per view rates. Unlike the computer I seldom run into a buffering problem and some of the available streaming services are only available through a player, not by computer. I still have to watch some of my Hulu programs on the computer as they don't have permission to deliver some shows through a player to the TV but it is only a minor issue. Set up is incredibly simple and takes less than ten minutes. Even the technologically challenged will find it a simple, easy to follow process. I would recommend this product to anyone interested in having a wide choice of TV programming without the high cost of cable or satellite.

Awesome product, connect to your wi-fi and it just works, if you buy this ROKU, you do have to sign up on-line with Roku.com. The remote is great, I have no problem with the remote even the unit it is behind glass in a cabinet, The unit is so small, it takes up no space, you can place it on the corner of another device and keep it away from the heat given off by your cable box etc; about the size of a Hockey puck, only very light weight There a tons of apps to scan through, most are free! I have the LT on a CRT, 480p on a CRT but the ROKU is able to be switched up too 780p if you have an LCD/LED TV. The remote is very small light weight, watch it, you can lose it in couch cushions easily. I have read tons of reviews of other TV convertors and everyone seems to come back to ROKU, it works like a charm! For those that do not have a credit card, you do need one when you sign up on line, in case you use VUDU, NETFlix, pay channels, you can call Roku and they will make an exception for you if you do not have a credit card, a friend used this method. ROKU"S customer service is excellent if needed. I bought an LT for someone that still uses a CRT TV and his also work's like a charm.

It picked up the signal in our house right off, which was great...the signal is not that strong in that part of the house, but we have not had any buffering issues yet. I would recommend having your laptop handy when you are setting it up the first time as there are a lot of things you have to do back and forth. As for the channels you have access to, if your cable company is on the approved list that works with roku, you are set and will have access to a lot more content thru the roku, mine is not, so it really limited the number of channels we have access to. We do have netflix, and that was easy to set up, pandora was easy to set up. There are a lot of channels that you can pay to play movies, I'm just hoping it isn't too easy to gain access to them and we wind up with a bunch of movies that the kids charge to my credit card, that remains to be seen...So far I am really liking it, and would suggest it as an alternative to hooking up a tv thru a game console.

The Roku LT has not disappointed. It picks up our wireless signal with no issues. Not being one who can really tell the difference between images on SD, 720p or 1080p, I can see no reason to spend more for a higher HDTV version. No buffering experience with the wi-fi, so no real need to pay more for the ethernet option, either. The selection of channels available on Roku has pretty much rendered our cable/satellite service useless. Tons of free channels on Roku and the amount of money we pay for the paid channels THAT WE WANT (not paying for dozens of channels we don't care for or have to block) is a fraction of what we had to pay for cable and satellite. The interface is simple and easy to understand, as is the remote control. We love our Roku's and this is the third one we have added.
