- That depends on the 12 year old. 20-gauge, has some recoil to it, but after a few round he/she should be fine, its not as bad as a 12-gauge at all. You can purchase rounds that are "low brass" meaning less powder charge. 20-gauge is great for beginners. Semi-Auto guns require slightly more maintenance then, pump-action guns, but are more practical for Clay bird and duck hunting.
