We purchased this product as part of an LCD 42 inch television bundle and I think this is the perfect size system for us with a small living room. The DVD player works great and it was simple to hook up and operate. The looks and size of the system are nice. You will need to purchase a sound/audio cable to hook the system up to the television to listen to the television in surround sound, if not, it will only come through the speakers when the DVD player is used.

This item is for someone who wants a traditional five speaker stereo system. The DVD player is the real value. It plays wonderfully in both picture quality and sound. Wow. However, on a scale of quiet to very loud, this system stops short at loud. Definitely not enough volume for a house party, but enough to feel the effects of watching a movie. The surround sound speakers are wired only, so it would take too much reconstruction for me to hook them up. It would be much better if they offered wireless back speakers. Instructions and set-up were a breeze. Definitely for someone who just wants the basics.

I have a 24'' RCA boob tube flat screen that i purchased about five years ago. It would be nice if i could afford a flat screen, but i'm in college and my 24'' has a good picture for not being a LCD or Plasma. I wanted surround sound to go with this, so i purchased this model at another store for $99 bucks. It is great for surround sound. It rumbled the room when the movie reached its peak sounds. People need to remember that this is a home theater and not for Music. If you want something to pump out your tunes then this is not for you, but if you're looking for something to spice up your home movie experience then i would reccomend this to you. Make sure you read the booklet and adjust individual channel volumes. You might want the surround speakers up louder than the front ones, and the sub woofer should be on "powerful" to get the best contrast between treble of the 5 spearks and the 1 subwoofer. You might experience a tinny sound when you first put it together, but adjust the different channel volumes and place them right and you'll solve the problem. you can't beat this item for the price. Especially $99 that i paid on sale.

THERE'S A PLUG INPUT ON RCA SURROUND SOUND TO USE THE OPTICAL CORD BUT THERE IS NO OPTICAL PLUG-IN ON THE ELEMENT 55" TV ..DID I OVER LOOK SOMETHING ON MY TV OR IS IT THAT I'M NOT ABLE TO USE AN OPTICAL FOR THIS SET UP?
by an anonymous customer 3/31/2011
  • Optical would prob only be available on back of cable or sat box. To get image to TV use HDMI cable (best) or video cables.

  • there is no optical plug on that TV but no biggie just use an HDMI cable instead. You wont notice the difference as this particular receiver is not the best out there. If this were a $500 receiver I might have a different story but as is just go with HDMI...

  • If there is no optical output on your TV, then you need to go with the RCA cords.

  • It is best to refer to the TV manual to see if there is an Optical port for OUTPUT. If there is no Optical port then you will not be able to make the connection. However you can always connect the optical port from another device, such as, Dish Network, Digital Cable Box, DVD or Blu-ray into the RTD317 unit.

  • You may have the answer for this by now, but your television is listed on the Walmart site as having a digital audio out hook-up. Some of these tvs have these hookups underneath the back of the TV. They can be a little difficult to get to.

  • All the speakers should work all the time. If you audio input is coming into the audio (red/white) jacks you need to set your input on Aux In.

  • All speakers work all of the time due to the receiver unit but any movie saying it is in DOlby surround gives better sound as the sound is more balanced for the different speakers

  • When it is in 5.1 surround mode. Make sure your TV is set to it. If it's not broadcast in 5.1, then the surround speaker will not work.

  • Surround sound will depend on the source of the signal. For example, when playing a DVD, for all the speakers to work, you will need to play a 5.1 encoded DVD, but not all DVDs are in 5.1. Also keep in mind that even when the disk is 5.1, the rear speakers only turn on when needed to enhance the surround effect. They are not meant to be on all the time. Hope this clears it up.

  • You have to get the right output from the tv or its just sterio and no rear speakers i had to return mine and get better system, only the right videos will play all the speakers

  • Only when 5.1 audio is available and chosen. You have to pick surround and then it has to be available from your cable provider and or the dvd you're listening and watching, not all have them. Mine kick in during commercials mostly or while watching a movie on cable or newer dvds and if comcast you gotta have the volume on your main box menu turned to surround heavy. You get that in the audio set up section of the main menu. It's kind of goofy how the thing works, I find it perfect for my bedroom and have the surrounds on each side of the bedposts. Then it works good, living room it's kind of weak, but it's alright. I have this one and the higher up RCA one with the metal speakers, that one is much better. But I got this one with the Vizio tv I bought from here.
