It is ambiguous. Anyone doing a bench (decline, flat, incline) would need to be enormous to weight 400 lbs in the area where most of the pressure from doing a bench press will be when lying down.

Comparatively, across the entire length of the bench a very large person could have, if not 400 lbs, well over 200 lbs and even 300 lbs lying on the bench.

You should speak directly with the manufacturer but I'd be inclined to say that the weight on each of the load bearing hinges shouldn't exceed 400 lbs or on any small area of the bench itself, eg standing on the bench to change a light bulb.

What is the maximum weight the user can be and what is the maximum amount of barbell weight this bench is rated for?

Bought this for my 15 year old son. Took about 2 1/2 hours to put together. Lock knob for the preacher bench isn't real easy to screw in and out due to its location. (You have to remove bench to do leg lifts) I like the anti tip hooks and its ability to decline. Not sure about durability...haven't used it yet..but it is a good buy for the price!!

Nice bench for my circuit training program,light weights high reps. It took over 2 hours to assemble  by myself. Shipped to my door,product was in good condition all
parts were there. Good bench if you are not into powerlifting, otherwise order an
olympic bench and/or rack for heavy lifting. Hope this review helps customers make  a
good decision :-)

The curling post at the end of the bench broke lose from the bolts and the cheap wood went to pieces the 1st day. NOT MEANT FOR ANYTHING OVER 40LBS. Also the extra padding for the lumbar support prevents you from doing proper bench presses or to move to a more comfortable position
