<p>Disinfection of drinking water is one of the major public health advances of the 20th century, however, the disinfectants themselves can react with naturally occurring materials in the water to form unintended byproducts which may pose health risks. A major challenge for water suppliers is balancing the risks from microbial pathogens and disinfection byproducts. Contaminates are in our water supply, some not regulated or adequately controlled, posing immediate health problems. People turn on their taps to drink, shower, bathe, cook, wash dishes and clothing, assuming it is safe. Bacterial contamination causes severe digestive problems, fever, nausea, diarrhea and sometimes even death. According to the EPA, total coliform and E. coli bacteria testing is recommended twice a year. Fecal coliform bacteria are mostly found in drinking water that comes from private wells and small water systems. This is partly because private water supplies, small rural public water supplies and private wells are not required by law to be tested. The PRO-LAB comes with an Optional Lab Analysis. On the petri dish the test will show columns - if you have 0 - 5 columns indicates clean water. Over 5 columns you should send in for full analysis, this kit will need to be mailed inside the included pre-stamped envelope to Pro Lab Inc's. There is a charge of $30 for the testing. Is this a one time use kit or more than one time?

No, the Bacteria in Water testing kit can only detect and identify the presence of bacteria.

We had bacteria in our well water. Had a bacteria remover installed. Bought this to verify the bacteria was gone and it was.

Test showed presence of bacteria so I sent in for additional analysis. Report came back very detailed.

The was an e coli outbreak in the town next to mine.  Bought the kit to test my water.  Kit was easy to set up and after 2 days, there was no growth so did not need to send in to lab.

Affordable way to test water without having a professional company come out to take sample.  Easy to use and option to send in for additional analysis.

I ordered my Bacteria In Water Test Kit online and I received it quickly.  It was easy to use.  A friend and I experienced cramping and bowel distress after drinking the water.  Another company said they ran a test and nothing was wrong with our water.  Your PRO-LAB's test proved otherwise! Thank you!

Excellent but appears to be limited to e-coli bacteria. Which is OK for well water.

While a good value to establish the presence of bacteria, it does not differentiate as to types of bacteria.  Sole purpose is to reveal ecoli, which it apparently does well.

Bacterial presence only

It seemed like a good idea, but it just did not work. The sample collector siphon is not being clearly marked how much is full, when mixed with the chemical, it never became hardened in the petri dish, and it was difficult to understand the results. The instructions included an illustration of what some vague results indicting bacteria may look like. The incubation period and potential resulting changes was vague. It all boiled down to you really had to mail it to the lab for results. I was seeking to avoid the lab or I would have just gone to the lab. It did, however include mailing envelope with postage. My sample never "dried" enough to mail it even if I wanted to.  I threw it out and went to the lab.

How do use this product one time before in the summer and it worked I ordered two more in the winter time and I do believe they froze in my mailbox and did not work for me

My test didn't work. My petri dish had some sort of film on the inside of it, I'm  not sure if this was there to help the solution set up or if the dish had been contaminated in some way, but when I added the solution (mixed with the tap water I was trying to test) it was supposed to set up within an hour. Mine didn't. I waited 48 hours to see if I had any bacteria present but there's nothing, just this solution that never set up. I don't trust that my kit worked at all. 
I have well water that I test every few years, I'm not sure which kits I've used in the past but I had a lot more confidence in them than this. Had I known I was going to have to conduct a science experiment with a petri dish I would have chosen a  different test kit. With this kit there's an optional service of sending the petri dish in the mail and having the manufacturer's lab test it for $40. I think my kit is contaminated or expired and can't be accurately read in any lab.
