I searched high and low and reviewed dozens of deep fryers before settling on this one. So far it has been flawless in its performance. One little drawback is the temp issue. Every deep fryer is capped at reaching about 375º. I would have liked to seen a bit more.......400-415º is ideal. The real secret to healthy (yes, I just said healthy!) deep frying is the temp of the oil. You want the oil hot enough to sear the outer surface closed. Once the outer surface is sealed closed, it prevents oil from entering into the food being fried. Harold McGee in his excellent book, "On Food and Cooking" proved that you can indeed deep fry food and have literally NO oil enter the final product. That means it is cooked through with no oily after taste. The secret to this is the temp of the oil. His experiments settled on about 415º as the ideal temp to deep fry. That is hot enough to seal the surface, yet not too hot to burn the food before it is finished frying. Another suggestion I have........Don't waste a lot of money on Peanut oil!! Instead, go to a restaurant supply store or Sam's Club and buy the food service grade shortening. Most of these are "creamy" mixtures that can withstand multiple cooks using the same oil. I owned several A&W restaurants and we would change our fryer oil only a couple times a week. That is after using them all day, every day. For the home cook, You can keep the same oil in your fryer for many, many cooks. The myth behind peanut oil is that it has a higher burn point than other oils. It is true, but the difference is very small. Besides, you will never reach the burn point, so why pay double what other oils costs? Great product!

Great fryer, cooks fast and allows more than one food to be cooked at a time.Easy to clean because the fryer oil tank can be removed. That is a huge plus over our old fryer. We threw it away when we saw how good this one worked. The old one was very hard to clean because the oil tank couldn't be removed.

My husband and son think they have to have french fries or tater tots everyday so I have been through a few fryers. The side by side baskets are very handy to fry chicken & tots at the same time. I've only had this Presto for a few weeks but can tell that if it will hold up to all the usage we give it, I"ll love it!

    • You will have to drain by tipping it. I usually save my containers of oil and once the oil cooks, I will pour it back in there so I can clean it.

    • I haven't seen a drain plug on the unit itself. The container which holds the oil is removable from the unit. I would just say tipping, however you would want to ensure that you are pouring it into something that won't allow the oil to spill on the floor causing a slipping hazard.

    • It says in the instruction to not use solid fat, which lard is. in the fryer. "Solid fat will not melt uniformly and will cause severe smoking. It may also cause the unit to overheat resulting in the reset button tripping. In addition, solid fat will solidify once it has cooled making it very difficult to remove or insert the control assembly." This came straight from the manual.

    • No they say when the lard cools it will damage the burners because it solidifies.

    • It isn't recommended in the owner's manual. It states that it "causes severe smoking and may cause the unit to overheat." It would also be difficult to clean as you need to wait for the unit to cool before cleaning.

    • no. Usinig lard will ruin your deep fryer heat mechanism. Only use liquid based oils such as vegetable or peanut oil.

    • Yes - You can use any type of lard, grease or oil. For best results, Sunflower Seed Oil is the best - It's a little more expensive, but it lasts longer than anything I've tried and it won't pass on the flavor of what you just fried. I fry 10-15 battered pieces of fish and then fry french fries right after and the french fries don't have any fishy taste or smell. And, this is true even after using the fryer a dozen times. Sunflower Seed Oil doesn't break down like other lards or oils. Consequently, the cost per usage is quite minimal.
