Review by Library Journal (2008-04-15)

Departing from her Kate Shugak series, Stabenow has written a corker of a suspense adventure (following Blindfold Game, 2006) featuring the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard. This time they are up against a renegade terrorist out to destroy what he considers the greatest symbol of American power and success. The story starts with a shocking crime committed in the name of honor, establishing a theme that continues throughout the book: the perpetuation of evil disguised as righteousness.

The event starts with Akil, a once gentle young man on his first steps to becoming a famously cold-blooded terrorist. Totally nonreligious, he is not interested in holy wars and is instead seeking an outstanding career achievement that will allow him to become one of Osama bin Laden's elite. Stabenow has definitely done her research on terrorist organizations and activities, NASA flight protocols, and Coast Guard technology, terminology, and procedures.

Her characters, even the terrorists, each speak his or her own form of "corporate lingo" convincingly. Narrator Lorelei King does an excellent job, managing multiple Middle Eastern accents, a large cast of diverse male and female voices, and a busy, action-driven narrative with perfect aplomb. Recommended for library collections where thrillers or Stabenow's other books are popular.

[Stabenow won an Edgar Award for A Cold Day for Murder in 1993; Prepared for Rage is also available as download able audio from Audible.--Ed.] - Barbara Rhodes, Northeast Texas Lib. Syst., Garland
