    Good 1st Chainsaw

I've been looking for a gas chainsaw for a few weeks now. I wanted one to cut firewood. With a lot of land in the county where I live, it's free for the taking. So I decided on this model. I had it working 5 minutes out of the box. It was easy to assemble. I also found the gas and oil openings to be nice a large for easy pouring. It took a little bit to start, but once started it ran well. It did stall a couple times, but I think maybe that was just air in the line. As far as cutting, it went thru newly felled trees with ease. I cut a lot of wood in a short amount of time. I believe this chainsaw will be easy enough to take into the woods, to harvest downed trees for firewood. At under $100.00, I can't see how you can go wrong.

I am a single mom and I did it! I have always been nervous to use powertools but have been slowly overcoming that fear. We love camping and camp fires and we pick up wood around the neighborhood when people cut down trees. Problem is, they are usually 4-6 feet long. My 13 yr old son talked me into buying this chainsaw...instead of using the reciprocating saw to cut the wood we collected last year. I read the manual thoroughly and after using it I highly recommend this product. Very easy to use, did not kickback once, and it was very easy to adjust the chain. I'm no longer worried about picking up larger tree limbs for our campfires,

First and foremost these saws are nicely built and contain Oregon Chains and bars. The directions are easy to follow and contain useful info on safety and cutting procedures. THe saw was easy to assemble and easy to adjust. Starting is ok (I expected easier starting with a primer and choke- but these engines are VERY cold blooded and not the easiest to start). Once the saw is up and running and warmed up it runs like a champ. Gas and oil consumption are pretty good. THe only things I have to complain about is that Poulan did not included any bar oil in the box (they include the 2 stroke oil but no bar oil) and that these saws use a POWERTIP bar that needs lubrication (that is what that little hole in the tip of the bar is for- a squirt of grease at every fuel up) but this is not mentioned in the directions at all! Get yourself a little grease syringe and give the tip of the bar a shot of grease at every fuel up- and the bar will last forever.

    • A. Yes it can be done. But why? The motor is designed for this size bar. Using a larger 18 inch bar would cause extreme wear and tear on the little motor. With a 14 inch bar you can cut up to 28 inches. If you need more spend a few more $$ and buy the Poulan 18" say. And Yes, you can put a 14" bar on it. Note: cutting chains can be made in almost any length you want at a saw shop. But why spend the extra money?

    • A. Yes you can and as far as the engine size goes. Even though the pp4218avx is labeled as having a 42cc motor and this one is supposedly a 33cc. Both saws have the exact same engine. Don't believe me? check the part numbers for the engine parts on both saws with poulans parts list off their website. They are all identical. I've contacted Husqvarna who makes these saw under the Poulan label and they say that all of the saws are in fact 42cc although I believe they're all probably 35-38cc and their passing them off for every size in the book. So go ahead and put on an 18 inch blade and you'll basically have the same exact saw as the pp4218avx.

    • A. Yes you can. However, I would not recommend it. The cost will be close to a real 18 inch saw that has a larger engine designed for larger trees. You cant turn a tiny 14 inch saw into an 18 inch saw by simply changing the chain. Most likely bog it down and get it stuck in the tree.

    • A. The recommended ratio for this saw is 50 to 1. You could use 40 to 1 with no problems. I mix my two stroke gas at 32 to 1 as I have bigger saws that require more oil. By mixing 32 to 1 for all I don't have to mix several cans of gas. One can runs them all. I have been doing this for over 30 years and the saws seldom give me problems. But again, the RECOMMENDED RATIO FOR THIS SAW IS 50 TO 1

    • A. Mix it 40 to 1, the little 3.2 ounce bottle that comes with the saw is enough for one gallon of gas. I mix it up a gallon at a time and also use the same gas in my featherlite poulan weed trimmer. Most small 2 cycle engines will be 40 to 1.

    • A. it depends on the type of Oil you are using..if you are not sure mix it at 32-1 it might smoke a little but if you go to lean on oil you could damage the saw. the worse to much oil will do is foul your plug.
