After 17 or 18yrs my 25" Crosley tube/cabinet TV had begun having screen distortion and so I was needing to replace it. My search began with trying to find a comparable HDTV screen size for my 4:3. I determined that a 42" screen would be a most fitting upgrade based upon the room and placement. As I was very much behind on the latest TV technologies...I set upon educating myself on aspect ratios and numerous other things...720p/1080p, 60Hz/120Hz, dynamic contrast ratios, viewing angles, additional features...etc, etc... After reviewing numerous LCD TVs and shopping around at the few stores in my area (Walmart, Kmart, Sears) looking a picture quality and price...I honestly wasn't all that impressed with any of the LCDs. The ones that did stand out to me as having acceptable picture quality were way out of my price range. And then I visited a furniture store that only displayed Plasma TVs... "Wow! Now this is what I'm looking for." It was then that I came back and began my search for Plasmas. This "Panasonic 42" Class Plasma 720p 600Hz HDTV, TC-P42X5" really stood out, as being a possible choice. And then after some research I was further impressed by these statements that I found: "For basic home cinema-like usage, plasma screens have a slight edge over LCDs. This is because plasma screens can still display blacks more accurately than LCDs can, which means better contrast and detail in dark scenes." "Apart from better contrast due to its ability to show deeper blacks, plasma screens typically have better viewing angles than LCD. " "While...exceptions do exist, plasmas do generally perform better in the dark, and models with an anti-reflective coating — such as the new Panasonic plasmas — are the best all-rounders." www.cnet.com.au/plasma-vs-lcd-which-is-right-for-you-240036500.htm I also found a comparative chart that was helpful in my decision making at: www.crutchfield.com/S-B1uqElwhWDz/learn/learningcenter/home/tv_flatpanel.html And then this piece of information found at Wikipedia: search Panasonic: "With the announcement that Pioneer would exit the production of its Kuro plasma HDTV displays, Panasonic purchased many of the patents and has incorporated these technologies into its latest Viera plasma displays. Panasonic remains the only HDTV manufacturer to concentrate solely on plasmas for its large (40-inch or higher) HDTVs, while many rivals have moved onto LCD and LED technologies." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panasonic Lastly, I was impressed by my personal observation that the reviews I noticed regarding Plasma TVs, taken from various websites, were consistently higher overall and with noticeably higher levels of satisfaction regarding "their" purchase as compared to what I observed for LCDs. I made my decision and purchased this TV online thru Walmart and picked it up at the store the same day. The associate manager who assisted me in carrying this product out of the store gave me a couple of helpful points on how to handle the TV...be sure to keep it UPRIGHT at all times. It was easy to unbox, lift out and assemble. I have service thru DISH and my TV was turned on and after a few moments to figure out the menus and inputs...I was viewing all the channels. I was immediately confident that the decision on this TV was the best all round choice for me! No buyers remorse whatsoever. Picture quality: Excellent. The picture quality is as good as my old tube TV...and even better. Sound quality: Excellent. While the sound quality may have seemed to be better in my old cabinet style TV...what I realized was that the old Cabinet style speakers are positioned "facing out" whereas the new HDTVs...all of them...have the speakers behind the screen and facing downwards. So it was just a matter of difference in the way the sound is projected. Appearance....Black Frame with Black Pedestal...not even close to my nice wood cabinet style... Oh Well... Additional features: Perfect for my needs. Easily hooked up my "VCR" and DVD. The Price. It was acceptable to me even though it wasn't on sale. Very pleased with this TV and would very highly recommend it!

I purchased this TV to put in our family/game room since the old CRT we have died, I also have a Dynex 40" LCD 1080p 60hz in the living room. I'm going to start by comparing this TV to the Dynex I've had since 2009, I was aware that the Panasonic was only 720p when I purchased it, comparing to the 1080p resolution of the Dynex LCD, I did not notice a significant difference, the picture (after some tweaking) is still fantastic on DirecTV HD and Xbox 360, even when I compared it to other 1080p floor models. The sound from the standard built in speakers is quite good on the Panasonic, the Dynex speakers were pathetic and I have that TV connected to a set of computer speakers and subwoofer, it seems many TV's have pretty pathetic built in speakers nowadays and these are quite good. The biggest difference was the 600hz sub field drive, even watching regular TV it was noticeable, on Xbox360 playing games like Call of Duty it was significant and impressive, the games were incredibly smooth on the 600hz. The only real cons I've seen so far is that the input/output availability on the Panasonic is very limited, only 2 HDMI inputs and no VGA input port, the Dynex has several inputs/outputs, there is no internet connectivity as is the case now with the newer TVs, but I do like the USB and SD Card slots, but for the price, I certainly am not complaining and, again, I wasn't expecting a load of features for the price I paid. I was never really sold on plasmas before due to their previous reputation, but it seems they have come a long way and the price was a great deal for it.

Right out of the box this tv Panasonic TC-P42X5 ROCKS!!!! This is a 720P HD plasma set up in my bedroom, but you can't tell it when it is all set up. I was a bit skeptical when looking at it initially when seeing it being 'just 720P'. But, I have a 60 Panasonic Plasma 1080P downstairs and this tv rivals that one. Hooked up panasonic Blue Ray with HDMI and was blown away!!! Sound is pretty good, but with slim design of TV you have to understand that they don't pack big speakers in flat screen tv's anymore - if sound is VERY important to you, the savings you get from this TV will allow you to purchase surround sound system:) I don't have it too loud with kids bedrooms down the hall.... TV allows for a TON of custom settings- you have game, cinema, basketball, golf, baseball, football, etc... pre-set for you which I think is awesome! You can hook up 2 HDMI's (I wish it had a 3rd or 4th) but with it being a bedroom tv I have HD cable box and Blue Ray DVD player so that is ok with me!!!! TV has very good efficiency rating, $13 a year!!!! Solid construction- I had looked at a Vizio 40 inch but it felt like it was made of cheap plastic- Panasonic builds solid products and they are high quality. Don't be afraid of the 720P it is definitely the BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!!! $398 for a 42" HD Tv? Fugget-a-bout-it!!

Purchased this TV for the bedroom, very impressed. Plasma TV's have come a long way, this one is way cooler temperature wise than the older plasma TV's. No way you can get a decent quality 42" LCD or LED LCD TV for this price. The SD card reader is great if you take a lot of pictures, way bigger screen than your laptop or desktop PC.

First off I purchase this TV as a gift for my grandparents. Their TV was getting old so I wanted to upgrade them within my budget. Anyways as I ponder on the list of TV Walmart has to offer. This Panasonic was a great deal in the size and quality. I own the next size up from this model and it's been awesome for me. The final choice came down to this model and a 42'' Samsung for the same price. Samsung is coming up in the technology department but Panasonic has been around for much longer so it was a no brainer. Like some people I hesitant because of the 720p but honestly you could not tell the difference (if you could....then good for you) Overall you are paying under $500.00 for a great size TV and quality is awesome. I don't think you could do better than this offer here. Hope this helps happy shopping!

  • A. If you are hooking it through HD cable or satelitte it ROCKS!!!! The SD picture is not great, but not many HD tv's have great SD pictures- they are built specifically for HD signal. My tv is hooked to blue-ray DVD with wifi and netflix is streaming beautifully!!! I have a 60" 1080P that cost more than twice as much as this TV and I would put them neck and neck in picture quality.....

  • A. I'm very happy with this TV, this is my 2nd Panasonic Plasma, 4th Panasonic TV I've owned. I have a 2008 50" Panasonic Plasma that is still going strong. Plasma's have come a long way and still give LCD and LED LCD's a run for their money, quality and pricewise.

I am thinking about buying this tv for my children to play video games and watch netflix on. The Samsung they have now sound quality is terrible.

  • A. It is a GREAT TV! It is a master bedroom TV for us- hooked up through HD cable and Blue Ray DVD with wifi- not sure what connection Wii uses, but if it is HDMI then definitely get this set- you can mount it on the wall pretty cheaply and the solid construction will be good for kids :) Sound is average but you do have ability to adjust settings in custom settings and for bedroom or playroom tv it is more than sufficient. I would not recommend for large living/family room area for sound unless you add a surround sound system. But with flat screen tv's the speakers are getting smaller and smaller as tv's get thinner and thinner. My kids see just fine from 10-12 feet away in our bedroom. Good luck!

  • A. I just purchased this TV and the quality of the built in speakers is actually quite good, I have a Dynex LCD and the built in speakers are pathetic. The Wii should be able to connect to it as it has the necessary RCA composite inputs available.

  • A. I was amazed at the sound. some tv's speakers sound like clock radio speakers, I had to make sure it was my tv with this huge sound. Yes, It is great for the Wii, and plus for netflix. Before purchasing have a associate at the store you purchase give you a demo of all features, and learn about the anti image retention. Do not keep still screens on Plasmas, for extended periods.
