Rated 4.7 out of 5★ by 3reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Fun from start to end. If you enjoy fast mystery/thriller/fantasy movies and magic, this is a fun one for you! I've recommended it to many. It keeps you guessing. Doubt you'll guess the ending before it gets there. Add to your collection. You'll wish it was in 3D, the magic parts are that fun to watch. 12/18/2013
Rated 4 out of 5★ by Fun for a lark, but it's no "Ocean's Eleven." I picked this movie up as a New Release sale after passing it by in the theaters, despite the dynamite cast. The premise reeked of "Ocean's Eleven" ripoff, a variation on a theme. And that's exactly what you get with this movie - something that could have been really great, but is unfortunately lacking in both depth and time - something that comes off as just a parlor trick, when it could have been a really great con.The real problem the movie faces is its pacing. There is absolutely no exposition or opportunity for character development. The writers set up Daniel (Eisenberg) and Hayley (Fisher) as bitter ex-partners, and then do nothing with the premise. Their actions are only fodder for bitingly sarcastic one-liners by Merritt (Harrelson). None of the "Four Horsemen" seem to have any idea why they've been recruited to perform their tricks, and no consideration for the endgame. They seem to have nothing but disrespect for one another at the outset, yet five minutes later we see them working as a completely cohesive unit in an elaborate ruse, with no individual agendas? Just for the fun of it?The bright spot is, for me, the always brilliant Melanie Laurent; although she is relegated to supporting character status behind Mark Ruffalo's brooding FBI agent, she does a lot better with her limited lines and direction than any of the other characters except for Morgan Freeman. Even here, though, there just isn't enough time for the relationship between the two of them to develop, and her motives are never quite clear. Is she there just as a pretty face, or is she there to unmask the bank robber? It's good summer movie fun, but it's nowhere near as intelligent as the "Ocean's" series, and perhaps that, in the end, is the trick. You still enjoy it anyway, even though you know you've been had. 09/05/2013
