I might go with the 2DS for someone that young. It's the same hardware, but in a somewhat more durable package. Matte plastic, no hinge to break, small things like that.

I would say no. I used to sell electronics for another company and I would not recommend this for anyone under six. A 3 yr old does not have the motor capability to properly use this. And there are not many games which would entertain a toddler. Also, these units are pretty fragile. If it is dropped, stepped on, or if the touch screen is pressed too hard, the unit can be ruined and there goes your money. There are many other items that can be used for toddlers which are much better suited. You'd be wasting your money otherwise.

Yes it is, I bought it for my 2 yr and he loves it. easy for him to use can change the games on his own. plays the games just fine without asking for help

If you want to in fact let a 3 yr old play videogames, sure, even though this has no 3d, I'd still worry about their eyes using any digital device at that age.
System is sturdy, but not invincible. Parental locks included in software.

Noticeably bigger, but the resolution is the same, so pixels will be more visible on the XL as well as games not looking as sharp, but if you care how original DS games & Virtual console games look, they upscale much better on the XL because its pixels are different sizes.
The top screen on the 2/3DS is good enough for me tho.

The Nintendo 2DS and 3DS have the same size screens. You get a 3.53-inch screen up top and a slightly smaller 3.02-inch screen below.

However, the 2DS screens are actually part of a single, flat screen unit that’s simply partitioned by the plastic screen surround of the console. It makes the 2DS cheaper and simpler to produce. This isn’t possible in the 3DS and 3DS XL because of the hinge mechanism, and 3D top screen.

The Nintendo 3DS XL has much larger screens. They’re 4.88 inches and 4.18 inches respectively. Just like the previous-gen DSi XL, though, you don’t get a real increase in image quality – just image size.

The screens all use the same effective resolution – 400 x 240 pixels for the top screen and 320 x 240 for the bottom one.

However, in the 3DS and 3DS XL, the top screen has double this max resolution to 800 x 240 pixels in order to offer 3D.

I was very skeptical of buying my 6 yr old this device, but it way surpassed my expectations. Both of us love it. It has activities for all ages, he used it to take pictures on a family trip. He draws, plays games, and I can use parental settings to limit the stuff he can access.

good price for a Nintendo 2DS. Used the in store pickup to get this good price, 
it did take two days but this was not an issue for me.  The Walmart staff  was helpful and the experience was good.  would use the in store pickup again.  Bought the Nintendo 2DS for my 15 year old son.

Nintendo 2DS handheld

I wanted a handheld gaming system that wasn't the 3-d one that hurt my head. This fits the bill perfectly. It's comfortable in my hand and plays a wide array of games that come at an affordable price. I do recommend getting a screen protector for the bottom screen that you use the stylus on.

Awesome handheld game system.

Nintendo DS has a great library of kid friendly titles. The 2DS plays all the 3DS and DS games. There are 1000's of titles. Tons of used selections at the local game store too. The number of latest release adult oriented titles may be limited, but if that's what you're looking for go buy the latest consoles.

Finally, the 2DS is abut $100 cheaper than the new 3DS XL. The major difference are (1) 2d only games, no 3d screens, this does not effect game play and (2) the 2DS does not fold in the middle like the 3DS. I was worried that this might lead to scratched screens, but we bought an inexpensive case to stick the thing in when it's in my son's backpack or on the car floor :)

Perfect for my 6th Grader

I've been a Nintendo fan my entire life and supported their consoles for as long as I can remember. I remember Reggie Fils-Aime showing off the console on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (Fallon is now the host of The Tonight Show, but that's beside the point) and I was won over by the AR Cards. I only ever had one reason for never buying one: I'm poor.

I recently sold my Wii after deciding to move on, and with perfect timing, Walmart offered a bundle that came with this console, a carrying pouch, and a $40 (which I used to buy a couple of games for the console). Considering I was on a budget at the time and my friend referred this over the 3DS, I couldn't pass it up.

Long story short, it was everything I hoped it would be. Without a doubt in my mind I recommend this.

Quite possibly video game perfection.

I bought this for my grandson's birthday. He previously had a DS and owns approximately 40 DS games. The 3DS system would not have suited him as he would have had to buy all new games. With the 2DS system, he can play both regular DS games and 3DS games. The system works very well, screen is sufficient size and the blue color is very cool. He is very happy and pleased

Great 2DS System

The Nintendo 2DS was initially thought to be a joke, thought up by the pranksters of the interwebs. However, it actually turned out to be a smart move by Nintendo to expand the user base and bring great handheld gaming at an affordable price.

Fans of the original DS may cringe at the new look, but it's not a bad design. Be sure to pick up the case for it to protect buttons and screens from damage.

Audio is mono through the speaker and stereo through a set of headphones.

Most of the games are fully enjoyable without the 3D effect, so getting a 2DS doesn't mean you're going to miss out on the fun. Enjoy!

Great Portable Game Machine

I bought this for an 8 year old girl as a Xmas gift. I have been hearing about Nintendo DS for a long time and this was the newest product in DS line. Came out just a few months ago and very reasonably priced. I found good reviews about it; the way it can play all Nintendo DS games (including the 3DS games in 2D format) was one of the reasons I bought this.
The only negative review I found about this product was the mono sound as opposed to stereo which the 3DS has. But I didn't find it very important over all.
Nintendo will keep coming up with new games and this handheld unit will work for many years is what I am thinking/hoping...

Good Value

This was purchased for my 16 year old son because we had concerns about the 3DS. The initial charge did take 3 hours so I'd recommend charging the product before giving to a younger child. Also, the battery wears down faster when connected to the internet but otherwise holds a charge very well. It did need an update the first time it was connected to the internet (again may want to access the internet before giving to a younger child) but afterwards it is easy to connect. My son is very pleased with the graphics (he started his gamer journey with a game-boy color) and says that the product has met his expectations.
