Reviews

Review by Library Journal (2007-01-01)

Many things can happen in the span of 19 minutes-fun things, mundane things, and downright horrific things. Best-selling author Picoult (My Sister's Keeper) shows just how quickly lives can be changed in this story of a school massacre much like Columbine that is told through the voice not only of the victims but also of the troubled teen who did the shooting. Readers will be pleased to see the return of two favorite characters.

Patrick DuCharme, the detective from Perfect Match, is assigned to the case, while Jordan McAfee, the lawyer from The Pact, finds himself representing the shooter. Picoult has that rare ability to write about an unnerving subject in a way readers will find absorbing. What appears on the surface of a Picoult novel is never as it seems, which is why her books are so popular with book groups. Her 14th novel, perhaps her best, is highly recommended for all public libraries.

Review by Library Journal (2007-10-01)

The other kids picked on Peter Houghton from the time he was in kindergarten all the way into high school. The bullying escalated from swiping his lunch and smashing his eyeglasses to slamming him into lockers. Finally, one morning in March, Peter takes a gun to school; in 19 minutes, nine students and a teacher are dead. Picoult has a keen ability to take a situation from today's headlines beyond sensationalism to examine the emotions and relationships of all those involved.

Peter's parents are well intentioned but clueless about the pain their son experiences daily. Alex Cormier is the judge who will be hearing Peter's case. She is a single mom to Josie, who was Peter's childhood playmate but left him behind when she moved up to the popular crowd. Josie's boyfriend, Matt, not only bullied Peter but displayed increasingly abusive behavior toward her. There are no neat solutions as the tension builds, and unexpected testimony provides a surprise ending. The excellent narration by Carol Monda is especially effective with the teenagers' voices. Highly recommended for adult and high school collections.
