    Less Than Stellar

After having the D600 for a month I have taken over 3000 photographs with it. Most were great with very little effort. The capabilities of this camera are mind boggling and has been a great addition to my collection of cameras. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a 5 star rating is the fact that after only 1000 photographs there were dust/oil spots on the sensor that showed up in the same places on each photo. The way I worked around this issue was cropping and composition. After the aggravation became too much, I requested a shipping label so that I could have a technician clean the sensor. After a mix up with the shipping label(on my part) the camera was sent back and I am awaiting it's return. Considering the vast improvement over my old Nikon, which isn't really that old, I do not want to use any other camera. It does great under low light situations and manages to capture very good images without a tripod. The fireworks photographs I captured on New Year's exceeded my expectations. If you are considering getting a "lesser" camera and lack quite enough funds to get this one, hold off on your purchase and save a little longer. It will be well worth it! Now the real test will be to see if the oil/dust spot issue returns or if Nikon has worked out an adequate "fix."

I bought the D600 twice actually. The first unit started to show the spots/dust/oil (I am not sure exactly what the spots were caused by) within the first 760 pictures. The unit only had one lens applied. There were no repetitive lens changes. I took the unit back. I got another unit that was within 150 units per the serial number. The spots started up within 540 shots. While I can understand that dust can occur, in all of the years I have owned digital cameras, I have never had this level of dust/debris affecting the camera. The camera was easy to use, took an excellent picture, and had great performance in low or limited light. I really believe this is a great camera, however, whatever is causing these spots/debris/dust to collect so readily needs to be addressed by Nikon. Nikon, please get this fixed. We should not have to send a brand new camera back for camera cleaning after 2-3 days of shooting. I cannot recommend this camera until they get the debris/spots issue solved.

Purchased the D600 right after Christmas. Have been nothing but pleased so far. Came with the 24 - 85 zoom which I have used 90+ percent of the time. Until now I have only used film: 35mm, medium format, and large. It took awhile for me to take the leap of faith to digital. Being able to use my AIS lenses on the D600 is a huge benefit. Thanks Nikon for the insight to keep the same lens mount through the years. I haven't tried to print from the D600 captured files yet. That will be the ultimate test. I like the feel of the camera in my hands. I still have a ways to go before I am fully comfortable with the D600 as a creative tool. To date I've just shot in auto focus and exposure (aperture priority). It has been pretty right on. The auto lock is convenient but still a bit awkward. I'll get used to it. I'm excited to continue learning the things I need to learn and to become competent in the mechanics of the D600 to allow me to think more about what I am shooting instead of how I am shooting it.

    Great move-up from D90

My D90 was getting near its "use-by" date and I knew I wanted an upgrade. The D600 is just that. I bought with the 28-300 and got an SB700 to complete the package. I've been using this camera since the end of October, have more than 5000 clicks with no dust problems at all. Low light is amazing, it's wonderful with my older 35-70 f2.8 push/pull and my 180 f.28 prime lenses as well as the 28-300. It's definitely heavier than my older cameras but the balance with the 28-300 is just right. I shoot lots of motorsports, including drag racing and have zero dust problems. I customarily change lenses with care so that's not a problem at this time. I will have it professionally cleaned at least every other race, as I have with the D90 and with the D300S I had for a bit. While I might have liked a D800, at less than 5' tall and about 100 lbs, the D600 is sized right for me and does everything I need. It's not just the camera that makes the photo, it's the artistry involved, but the right equipment sure helps.

    Sensor Mess

    Customer review by LisaD

In theory I should love this camera but, I don't. I have multiple Nikon lenses and speed lights and purchased it for close to $2,000 in order to have a full frame camera for my photography business. Landscape photography is the absolutely worse nightmare, the entire frame is a mess in the blue sky area due to dirty sensor issues in the upper left corner especially at f/22. Little specks all over the place that take close to 100-200 clicks to remove in post processing. My husband (a professional engineer) cleaned the sensor with a professional kit after I returned from a trip and discovering the big mess since I needed it for another photo shoot. The mess is endless it's back again a few months later and now I'm sending it in to the Nikon shop for the free repairs and cleaning. Possible two weeks without my camera is the best answer to something that hasn't performed since day one. See screenshot below of the post processing work necessary to meet my standards.

    Reviewing the D610

The D610 is not included in the list of choices so I'm submitting the D610 comments here, as it is essentially the same camera with a few nice improvements (a little more speed, better shutter). I've had the pleasure of shooting the D700, D800 and DF fairly extensively. With a few exceptions I find the D610 to be my favorite overall. Great 24mg (better than the over-sized 36mg of the D800). Nice size and weight. I really like the U1 and U2 dials. Now I can easily switch from Aperture to Shutter and find my basic settings waiting for me. I don't need all the basic options such as Scenes and Automatic but they are easy to ignore and they are there if I want someone to take a photo for me. What I miss most is the Eye Piece Shutter Lever. I think leaving that out was a major mistake. The battery life is excellent. Also missing is the after-picture quick-zoom using the OK button. Another frustration. Even the DF had that feature. But a great buy for the price.

Wonderful tool for stills and 1080 p video with audio monitoring in-camera

I've previously raved about the D3s and D7000, both of which I sold to obtain this camera and other AV gear- specifically to gain several features important to my work. These included 1080p with onboard audio monitoring via headphones, very useful for field video, and a small modular FX body to match my array of mostly FX lenses. This was important to enable me to take full advantage of the super wide-angle 14-24 f/2.8 and 16 f/2.8 fisheye lenses. Bonuses : in-camera HDR and timelapse, which I've already integrated into my workflow as well as tethered stills and video from Camera Control Pro2. Dual SD slots are very helpful in orgamnizing video and still images, as well as RAW/JPEG. I'm very happy with the image quality. Summary: Do I miss 11 FPS from the D3s? Whenever I shoot sports, yes. Do I miss the D7000? Not really. Overall, the D600 allows me to execute most of the stills and video projects which I encounter at a very reasonable price. I anticipate that Adobe will someday soon also allow tethering in Lightroom 4????

    Great Camera - Great Problems

I have been a loyal Nikon User for over 23 years. My first 1000 pictures with the D 600 were amazing. Then the spots appeared. I figured that having the sensor cleaned would solve the problem. I paid a professional camera repair and authorized Nikon Dealer, to clean the sensor. In a matter of weeks while on a Hawaiian cruse not only spots appeared but other kinds of lint like particles were showing up on my pictures. After one day of shooting about 300 pictures the spots got worse. By the 4th day on the islands the shutter began to stick open. The process was shot once - shutter sticks. press the shutter button and the shutter closes. On the third and every third try thereafter it took a picture.I sent the camera in for warranty repair and I am anxious to get it back. In theory when Nikon completes the repair it should be as good as the N 610. That is if Nikon replaces the faulty shutter and sensor with the same shutter and sensor as in the 610

    Customer review by JRDPHOTOG

    5.0 stars 5/5/2013 by JRDPHOTOG

As a professional photographer, Nikon was my choice for many years. For reasons, some years ago I switched over to another brand of camera system, and I now have decided to go back to Nikon. Some other professionals gave me reasons to come back to Nikon that I ignored until early this year while covering a press conference where the 70-200 IS 2.8 lens was a must with high ISO. After a couple hours of shooting, I found that my images were not as sharp those shown by my peers using comparative Nikon equipment. Recently I purchased a D600 with the battery grip using both the 70-200 2.8 VR lens in FX and my 17-55 DX 2.8 Nikon lens on this camera body shooting along with my D300. Pleasantly surprised with the results of this equipment combination, the quality of images with the D600 is outstanding. I have put a few thousand images through this body in a relatively short time. The D600 is in my opinion is the most versatile camera I have owned.

The D600 is exactly what the doctor ordered for a photographer like me. I am a teenage photographer that competes with and is respected by local pros. I photograph corporate events, bar/bat mitzvahs, etc. and this camera is exactly what I needed. The camera performs well at high ISO levels and the autofocus works like a charm. The D600 feels incredible sturdy in your hands, which is something I LOVE. However, add on a speedlight and grip and this camera can get heavy quick. The shape is a bit awkward in my opinion; the d600 is quite wide, but does not maintain its aspect ratio when widening so it seems a little shorter than it actually is. Overall the D600's performance exceeded my expectations and is a great camera. I've wanted to get my hands on a full frame camera for a while, but couldn't afford to get a D800 and a full frame lens. However, with the D600 I think I might be able to put a 24-70 f:/2.8 under the tree in December.
