  • A. This depends on how big you want you subject to be! If you want to zoom in on your friend's eye you can do that close up, but if you are shooting a football game from the sidelines with a small amount of editing you can get a clear close up shot of the action across the field from you!

  • A. The truth is a little more complicated than the person below me stated. It does magnify your photo by 1.5, but as far a physics go it doesn't What it is actually doing is cropping the center out of the picture the lens presents which has the effect of making the image look magnified. However, the other benefits of a long lens don't carry across. One example is called compression. A long lens makes everything look like it's on the same focal plane. Think of a movie, where you have a caravan of Army trucks or something but they all look the same size and look exactly the same distance away even though they have to be 20-30 yards behind each other. That's the telephoto lens compression. Since the body only crops the image it doesn't offer the same compression. The benefits of the crop sensor camera are that you get a cropped picture without losing any megapixels. Great for sports

  • A. You will experience a greater zoom with the D5000 than other Nikon DSLRs because of the crop factor. Essentially, when you use a lens that is compatible with an FX or Full Frame camera, the lens will increase magnification by 1.5 times. Here are details from Nikon's website, http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/lens/af/zoom/af-s_vr_zoom70-300mmf_45-56g_if/index.htm To wrap up, you will actually be getting a 105-450mm lens for the price and I'm not kidding, when used with a DX format Nikon DSLR.

  • A. I HAVE A D90 BUT I'M ALMOST POSITVE IT WILL WORK ON THE D5000. I'VE TAKE PICTURES FROM ONE END OF A SOCCER FIELD (100 YDS AWAY) AND THEN CROPPED THE PICTURE AND STILL GOT A SHARP RESULT. THE PIC IS BELOW.

I'm a 68 year old man who was introduced to photography when my wife bought me a Nikon D5000 with a 18-55mm kit lens last Christmas. I did not have any experience with DSLR cameras, so this review will be strictly for folks like me. The Nikon 70-300mm VR II lens is a quality-built lens. It does not look or feel cheap. It has a metal mount and a rubber ring. I found the focus to be fast & accurate throughout the full range of the lens. The Bokeh is very good & pleasing. The images are very sharp with a very slight drop off past 200mm - not enough to knock the lens. Vibration Reduction II is excellent. It has 2 modes - Normal & Active which can be activated by a switch on the side of the lens. The color of the exposures are very good. The lens weighs 26.3 oz - a little on the heavy side. I have used this lens for portraits & nature shots. I was very pleased with my photos. One photo of a dragonfly clearly showed the wing structure. I am happy with my purchase. I would recommend buying it.

IT'S SHARP AND ACCURATE. WITH THE D90 BODY AND ITS' SPORT MODE, IT HAS PRODUCED EXCELLENT SPORTS AND WILDLIFE PHOTOS FOR ME. FOCUSES FAST AND PRECISELY. I'VE TAKEN SHOTS FROM ONE END OF A FOOTBALL FIELD TO THE OTHER WITH GREAT RESULTS. A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE KIT LENS BUT WELL WORTH THE EXTRA DOLLARS.

re-discovered how great this lens is

I took out my 70-300 VR to take shots with my D7000 of our first varsity tennis match of the season. I was blown away by the color, contrast, and sharpness (except at 220-300mm). But even if it's clearly soft at the farther range, at least I will still get reasonable shots that the point-and-shoot crowd can appreciate. I was ready to sell this lens to replace it with the FAR heavier and costlier 70-200 vrII, but I'm coming to realize that other than losing some of the improved low-light shooting and bokeh, this 70-300 VR compares extremely well with the 70-200 VRII with the GIGANTIC advantage of portability. There is practically no meaningful bokeh with the 70-300 since everything is in focus all the time with the small apertures you have to use, it might end up being the only reason I end up getting a faster lens. truly an amazing lens for it's consumer (non-pro) designation. the low weight and low price is simply amazing too, considering the picture quality it is capable of producing.

I bought this lens for bird photography. I am using it on a D90, which of course, if pretty old. Regardless, I could not get a decent image, even with a tripod, at extended focal lengths. The bird feathers had no detail whatsoever and cropping, of course, just made matters worse. I had to get extremely close to the subject, which is next to impossible for birds, to get a sharp image. Using a tripod and manual focus, I went through each f-stop and found that beyond f/8 the sharpness just got worse. Oddly, the image in the viewfinder was extremely sharp, but the resulting image would be useless. I decided to take a loss and sell it on the auction site. Perhaps it was a bad copy? Quality control can't be this bad. It is hard for me to believe the great reviews this lens has from most buyers. I have uploaded some samples. The pictures look far worse than what you see in the small thumbnails.

I ordered this lens to meet my telephoto needs on my Nikon D80 and D60 cameras. I have been very impressed with the lens as I have with all Nikon products that I have used for over 30 years. It handles beautifully, is of most solid quality construction, and most importanly, takes great photos. It is a little heavy and expensive, but I feel that it is well worth it. I have received many comments from others on it.

My humble opinion: Not a bad option and performs relatively well. However, I don't think it is an ideal option for wildlife photographers who tend to shoot in low light conditions. So if you are that kind of shooters you probably need to look for at faster lenses offered by Nikon. It gets even worse if you mount if on a crop sensor camera. I hope my feedback would help people make a good decision.
