Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VR DX ED AF-S Nikkor-Zoom Lens
Nikons most powerful all-in-one zoom lens ever. If you want a single lens that can cover every imaginable shooting situation, from wide-angle groups to ultra-high-power zoom shots, look no further than the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. Boasting the longest reach of any NIKKOR all-in-one zoom lens, it delivers the equivalent of 450mm - enough reach to bring the most distant action up close. Nikons second generation VR II technology ensures every photo and HD video is razor-sharp, and Nikons advancements in lens design deliver consistent, exceptional performance in any setting. Its astounding 16.7x zoom range goes from a wide 27mm equivalent, great for group shots, vast landscapes and more, all the way to a super-telephoto 450mm equivalent, enough reach for wildlife photography and more. The lens can focus as close as 1.48 feet from your subject at 300mm. This ultra-high-power zoom capability means no subject or composition will ever be out of reach again. At super-telephoto focal lengths, even the slightest camera movement can cause image blur. Fortunately, the 18-300mm VR features Nikons second-generation Vibration Reduction technology (VR) to ensure every handheld photo and HD video is razor sharp. Shoot at shutter speeds 4-times slower than otherwise possible, a major advantage in low-light situations where a slower shutter speed means brighter, richer images. This lens also features a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet autofocusing, as well as Aspherical (AS) lens elements and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for maximum contrast and minimum lens flare and ghosting. Its also great for close-up shooting. Even more amazing, the 18-300mm VR does all this in a surprisingly compact, lightweight package.

When your Daughter earns Salutatorian at High School Graduation you only get one shot at a lifetime event. You never know where you need to be to get the shot, till you get there. Things change, and you better be ready. I got los of great shots form about 200 yards away. With the 18-300mm I was ready for anything, before and after shots were great too. I put mine on a new Nikon D7100 (Wow, what a camera) and yes it's a large camera setup, but no problem to carry and use. The person that will not carry it because it's too heavy, will Not get the shot that you will. I want the shot. I own about 7 lens and I find this one on my camera most of the time. For most people, it's all they will ever need. Take a look at the D7100 as well.

Coupled with the large pixel size of the Nikon 5200 pictures, the clarity and detail of pictires with this lens are amazing. I have literally taken the picture of the scene reflected in the eye of a pelican. Distance shots are great with the focus ring for fine tuning the objects. It is heavy, but fine when supported, the breath held, and the camera treated like the shutter should be squeezed, not pulled or pushed. Fine detail means a steady camera and focused lens. The only drawback, as with any zoom lens, is that it needs more light than a 35 mm. I will try a stick suppot whan I can.

I waited until I used this lens as my primary lens for almost 2 years before deciding to write a review. I've put it through every kind of situation and opportunity. Of all the telephoto lenses I've had (don't need the high speed lenses) this one is by far the best. The first thing I noticed right away was the surprising sharpness of my images at full 300mm. All the lenses in the 200mm to 300mm range were very inconsistent in sharpness and left me with many disappointments. The next surprise was the short distance between the subject and the lens at full 300mm. I didn't have to back up over a cliff to take a closeup. The telephotos I had before this one all had wobble and jerky manual focusing - one cost me 700 bucks! I won't mention the big-time manufacturer. I'm hard on camera equipment since I take it hiking and kayaking. This lens is built like a tank as is my 300s. Together they make one tough, reliable picture-taking arsenal. Now I own only one other lens and rarely use it.

A good lens at shorter focal lengths

Somewhat abashed about panning this lens after all the other sparkling reviews. However, I take a lot of medium to longer range wildlife shots. Wanting a versatile lens, and after reading all of the reviews, I opted on this one to compliment my D7200. For the most part, the outcome has been very acceptable. However, with a focal length at or above 200mm at infinity, the lens does not focus. Perhaps this is the lack of sharpness others have mentioned. After using for less than 3 months, I returned it to Nikon thinking it may have been defective. Unfortunately it was received back with no improvement, leaving me wondering if this is the nature of this particular lens or if by chance I purchased a lemon. In retrospect I believe shorter zoom lengths and/or fixed lenses are a less convenient, but a better option from an image quality standpoint. Attached images were taken with the VR "on" and auto-focused. Although compressed (equally) to fit in the allocated space, they do illustrate the issue. Manually focusing did not improve image quality. Focus areas were on the small bird in the foreground.
