    Superb Versatile Lens

This amazingly inexpensive diminutive lens is capable of bitingly sharp and gorgeously rendered images that you might expect from a lens costing 4x as much as this one…and don't always get. At every aperture, on my D7100, from f2.8 through f16 (and it is difficult to find much difference in sharpness across the frame), this lens can do the job. Just pick the aperture that suits the situation. The shots included are jpegs with minor cropping and little else in the way of post processing. At 1:1 lighting the subject can be a challenge because of the closeness required and for moving insects, this is probably not the best lens, but for an all-around prime that is capable of ultra-close, tack sharp photography, this little beauty is hard to beat. I have had way too many Nikon and third party lenses, but I have wrongly dismissed this lens for years. If you are looking for your first non-kit lens I would strongly recommend this one, even over the excellent 35mm f1.8G.

I wanted an inexpensive macro lens. This is it. All the required extra effort and precision needed for macro photography pays off in the end. Any issues you may experience using this lens are macro photography issues, not lens issues. Very quickly I realized to maximize this lens, the R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System is a must(my camera has commander mode). I have taken great shots without the R1, but I recommend it strongly for the light required at smaller aperture settings. Higher ISO speeds defeat the amazing sharpness of this great little lens. Buy the R1, shoot at ISO 100. Don't tell Nikon how sharp it is... they might raise the price. The R1 removes most constraints associated with macro photography. Depth off field is the thing. An extremely sharp lens. This lens has whet my appetite for the Nikkor AF-S VR II 105mm f/2.8 Micro IF-ED which would be a perfect versatile all around prime lens for portraits and macro. If I was just starting out and wanted prime lenses, I'd buy the Micro series lenses and have the best of both worlds.

I was expecting this lens to take better images of things far away but it doesn't really do all that great. The product description made it seem like this lens would do more than just a close-up images. But the images I have taken that are far away did not come out good at all. now take a picture of something with in several inches of the lens and you get a fantastic image with a very shallow depth of field. So in the respect of taking pictures of small things like a pinch of dirt or hermit crab or a butterfly or a bug or a snowflake or close ups this lens is pretty awesome. I do think the product description should be changed slightly to reflect the correct function of this lens.

I bought this lens as a macro lens, but soon discovered that I ended up using it for everything. Image quality is unbelievable, and I cannot fault it in any way. This was a pleasant surprise, as I did not expect anything near this standard considering the price. Build quality is great, and although not built like one of the gold ring lenses, it is on a par with the 35mm f/1.8G and 50mm Gs. Like the 35mm, it is very light and compact, and it makes a nice change to use such a small lens without compromising on image quality! Focus speed is actually rather fast and very accurate. When using this lens for landscape/portrait shots (with the focus limiter switched on), focusing seems instantaneous. I have both this lens and the 35mm DX, and can honestly say that I would pick the 40mm over the 35mm every time. It may not be as fast as the 35mm, but the close focusing ability is very useful, even when I'm not doing 1:1 images. With image quality close to pro lenses, full 1:1 focus capabilities and such a compact body, this has to be one of the best lenses ever!

I do a lot of macro photography, not bugs or snowflakes, but what the old folk would call "copy work". I am documenting family memorabilia which includes medals, trinkets and many many photographs and documents. I need to be mobile and I need a lens that fits on a Dx D7200 body. Dx lenses for Dx bodies. I have and use a 60mm but this lens is much smaller, lighter and has excellent image quality. It fits better in the bag and thus allows me more opportunity. The problem with this lens is that I think it's sharper and better than the 35mm f1.8, about which everyone raves ... so, I am adapting this lens for portraits and for panoramic stitching projects also. At this size, weight and price, it is perfect for many purposes.

This lens is a winner...much, much more than I bargained for. If you love macro and also the ability to shoot with a 40 mm lens...YOU WILL LOVE this lens. Outstanding for Nikon...and an excellent price. Shoot like the pros with this small wonder. You will be amazed at the results. If you are thinking 35 or 40 mm...go with this will not be disappointed.

This lens is incredibly sharp. When used for macro work the images you can capture with it are just amazing. You can heavily crop your images as much as you want and you won't loose detail until the file literally starts to pixelate! I love using this lens for macro. You just have to keep in mind that since this lens is only 40mm you will have to watch just how close you get to your subject. I wouldn't recommend this lens for insects but for everything else this lens is just amazing. It will also double as a portrait lens to. This lens has a focus limiter switch which limits the lens from traveling though its entire focus throw. This is handy when the lens isn't being used for macro work. I'd highly recommend this lens if your looking for a small compact macro/portrait lens. It really is a great buy.

This lens is a great all around lens! It's at a decent focal length for DX cameras, has macro capabilities which are even better than I expected, and great background blur! This makes the lens excellent for portraits and macro shots. The barrel extension makes the lens a little long, but that is a small price to pay for the price of the lens, it's expected. The shallow depth of field can make a lot of the image blurry, so it's best to stop it down to ~f/4 or so, allowing more of the image in focus, because it gets a little too blurry at f/2.8 at times. Just one flaw with this product, when at the closest focusing distance, if the camera is facing a downward angle, the shadow of the lens will appear in the photo if using the camera's built in flash.

Most of my photography is either with the 70-200 2.8VRII, or rather wide with the 12-24. While I have a half-dozen older 24mm and 50mm lenses in my lens rack, their control of CA has not been great, and on the D7000 found I needed to adjust focus. I bought the 40Micro-Nikkor and fell in love with it in its own right. No sign of CA, sharp and contrasty, and just a great lens to work with. I keep finding new uses for this lens, but have come to especially love it when using it as a 'normal' lens - check out the attached image of our skittish Norwegian Forest Cat. I use it for fast close-ups when I don't want to use my 105Micro, but mostly it is just that the 40Micro is so fast to work with. It gets the job done, with sensational quality.
