I used an excellent film SLR from another manufacturer from 1976 until 2014, when I finally discovered, during a South Dakota holiday, that it was almost impossible to buy film outside of cities. I had enough points on a Canadian loyalty programme to get a new camera; the D5300 had the best ratings of the models they had on offer, and so I got it. I have not regretted the decision for a moment. The D5300 takes stunningly beautiful pictures. The kit lens is great. I have also purchased the 18-200mm zoom and the 35mm f/1.8 DX prime, and the SB-700 Speedlight. The pictures that I took with it during my recent cycle tour of France were technically amazing (and, I hope, artistically pleasing). This was the second-lowest DSLR that Nikon offered at that time; what the images are like from their top-end cameras, I can only imagine.

A real improvement over the D5000! More pixels, better colour and clarity, full high-def video.

Picked up this camera 3 months ago, made good use of it during a family holiday, and now have over 6,900 images on the camera. The overwhelming feature is the very rich true colours. Everything looks very life-like, no photoshop required (the D5000 needed a small push with photoshop). Lenses used include the 16-85, the 10-24, and the new 85micro. The increase in pixels is very welcome, as after cropping there a still plenty of pixels left for a large image. There is a considerable improvement in low light images, as well as the overall range of contrast. Video is very smooth, and full high definition, and the image is clear and sharp. The camera takes advantage of the new SD-XC1 chips, and the Extreme Pro 64Gb gives me literally unlimited high-speed continuous shooting in good lighting situations. The wifi and gps features are useful, but will drain a fully charged battery rather quickly, even when not taking pictures. Overall an excellent experience!

After careful consideration I elected to go for the D5300 for several reasons - the newer 24MP sensor without the optical low-pass filter, the newer Exspeed 4 software, the flip-out screen, decent ISO at the upper end, HD video at 60fps, WIFI connection... I wanted it for nighttime shots (including telescope shots at weird angles) and decent landscapes/nature pictures, and it has certainly delivered. Compared to similar cameras in the 3000, 5000 and 7000 models I frankly found it to have all the features I wanted and getting anything more simply cost more than I was willing to pay for. In fact, the only camera I would consider now as an upgrade from this is the newest DX flagship, the D500, and interestingly the D5300 has some settings that the D500 doesn't - maybe because professionals don't use a lot of preset scenes or effects, but still I found that an interesting advantage of this little mid-range model. One thing I particularly like is the fact that in manual mode you can adjust ISO through the custom function switch, aperture through its dedicated switch, and shutter using the dial alone - so you can tweak everything easily and quickly on the fly. I shoot mainly in manual mode, but the many and varied effects and scene settings are very good and provide a great way to get into photography and learn how things work. I use the nightvision mode to align with stars and focus, then I can shoot in manual to get all the colors. Since getting it I've learned to love things like the shot timer for delayed/repeated long exposure shots without camera shake, the custom menu and custom Picture Control settings. It's easy and funky enough to allow amateurs to get a lot out of it, but at the same time has a ton of cool features that I'm still just getting to use. In-camera editing, including RAW processing, means that when you get something "straight out of the camera" it can look as good as some photoshopped stuff. I've yet to even try Lightroom or Photoshop! I would recommend this camera to anyone - even those looking for slightly cheaper models, because you'll get a lot for those few extra hundred bucks. In contrast, getting something better could mean doubling the price (or more!) to get any meaningful benefits. It's not an entry-level DSLR by any stretch, so it may be more than some folks really need - but it's my first DSLR and a significant upgrade from my cellphone camera, which is what I was using before. All the pictures below are straight out of the camera - any editing was done by the D5300 except for some cropping to get under the file limit for uploads.

I bought this as I couldn't afford a full frame. Biggest thing that caught my attention is it has no low pass filter like medium format cameras, and the D810 and 800E. Decided to try it out, and honestly the photos look like full frame pictures. There are disadvantages of course since it's not a full frame, but it's a cheaper alternative. I use it both for photo and video and I swear I can just use this camera all day and all night with no issues at all. It may not have a professional body, but lets be real here.. Unless you're a high end professional, you're most likely not going to have your almost $1000 camera out in the rain, snow, or a sand storm so you're not missing anything. This camera is a great starter DSLR till you can afford a full frame if you want full frame look minus the price. Of course the lenses you buy for it play a HUGE role too, but this is just an all around great camera to own.

    1,000 photos/week??? ROCK SOLID!! :)

I average an honest 1,000 photos per week (actually, a little bit more). Almost every photo is outdoors, in temperatures ranging (in Fahrenheit) from 100+ to 13. It's never failed though autofous slows a little bit when it gets that cold. (It's only rated for 32 degrees.) I'm incredibly happy with it! I'm still using the kit 18-55mm lens with a CPL (Circular Polarizer filter) a_nd the camera & lens _often_ get banged on a steering wheel. Still rock solid. I haven't yet done any real video recording but I hope to. The fully articulating screen (ONLY the 5xxx series have them, in the entire Nikon DSLR lineup), has come in handy. Hey Nikon! Do you need a tester for your DSLRs? Who else is shooting 1k photos/week, in temperatures beyond your ratings? I'm available!! :) #HardestWorkingD5300
