    • A. The lenses are NOT VR. Over a month and two cameras later as well as promises from multiple customer service reps that the camera came with VR lenses, this camera absolutely does not come with VR lenses. If you notice that the description on the web page has now been altered so slightly to say "non-VR" lenses. The pictures still show the VR lenses, but believe me when I tell you the camera you will receive does not have VR lenses.

    • A. According to the description they are both VR ... I checked the Nikon site a few days ago and they don't sell a kit with one VR lens and one not, so if one lens is VR the other is as well. They sell 3 kits; one has one lens, one has two lens, not VR and one that has 2 lenses that are VR.

    • A. I e-mailed customer service and this is their response, "according to our records the Nikon D3100 Kit includes TWO lenses, AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm and AF-S DX VR NIKKOR 55-220mm zoom lenses.". However, this bundle everywhere else does not come with the VR zoom lens at this price, so I am doubtful.

    • A. According to the description the 55-220mm lens has VR, but the 18-55mm does not. I would suggest looking the lens up on another website, like Best Buy, if the lens alone is not available here. Hope this helps.

Camera exceeds expectations. The two included lenses are fine for normal photography duties, and the continuous shooting mode allowed me to capture many images and then choose the best one later. The only drawback is no mic input for HD movie recording, but I'm certain I would rarely use that feature if it was there. The on-board sound that it does capture is fine for day-to-day home video work, however if I were professionally trying to capture video and audio, I'd still use a separate audio device. All said, the 496 dollar price point for this camera and the two lenses was the best deal by miles that I found. I had it shipped to my local Walmart, and it was very quick and painless.

I am gonna have to say! that I am pleased with this camera and it has taken great shots. I have not had it vary long but, so far I am pleased walmart has the best price on this item you will not get a better price any where else they want a hundred or more and no extra lens some $200 more rediculous even though its worth every dollar why pay more some where else and save by buying thru walmart. I do think you need to have some experience to operate this camera. its not a beginners camera but even a beginner could figure it out.

I am very glad that I decided to get this camera even though my previous camera had more mega pixels. The pictures up close and far away are really good. The pixels must be different or better, I'm not sure. My old camera's distance photos are almost always blurry and with the long distance lens that comes in this camera package, that almost never happens. Also because I have never had a dslr camera the lens after you turn it to where you want it can be set to auto and will help you sharpen the image. The short lens works very nicely as well; again, you adjust distance and it helps sharpen the image if I can't. My old camera from a distance (about 5 to 8 feet away) was hit and miss on if the image would be good or blurry. I would buy this camera again for the price. The mega pixels are just as good as my old 18 mega pixel camera, so do mega pixels matter as much, not always. I imagine that the higher mega pixels on this type camera must be very professional.

I returned my D3100 right away because the camera and kit lens couldn't focus on anything at any setting (even AF) and while talking with Nikon Tech Help, there was a problem with being unable to get the camera out of ISO 3200. Doesn't bode well for this 40+year photographer. Now I'm using a D5000 and find the same problem. Not to rag on all of the camera manufacturers but when did they agree that a still camera had to be a video camera, Ipod touch, HD/3D television and smart phone and GPS tracking device all rolled into one device. Personally, I would rather go back to film and either my Canon F1, or Leica M, or Nikon F3, The reason being is their all manual and every lens was a great tool. Nothing mediocre or does so much it can't just be what it was intended to do - take great shots. On to these mediocre lenses designated with so many acronyms they're such a waste of money and resources. And to add insult to injury - no honest reviews - just more marketing hype. Shame on all of you.

I've had a few miserable experiences with the auto-focus feature when taking shots in Live View and when shooting video. Even when the subject of the view is in the middle of the frame, and not moving, the camera decides to hunt for focus and makes the video blurry. The amount of lens motor noise that gets picked up by the mic is also troubling. My experience taking pictures with Live View is even more mortifying. With the camera on Auto and the flash deployed, it could not find focus on relatively simple portraits from across a table. I was embarrassed by my camera. Maybe I have a defective unit, or maybe some firmware update will fix it, but as it is right now, I would not recommend this camera to anyone I liked. I've read the manual backwards and forwards and I've tried everything to overcome my problems with the auto-focus, but I can only get good photos using the viewfinder or focusing manually. I may come to love this camera, but right now, we are getting off to a rocky start.

For someone like myself that is not considered a professional photographer, but would like the ability to produce professional results...look no further than this Nikon wonder. With the on board 14 mp capability along with 1080p video recording you will always be prepared for all of your photo needs. I have 2 very active children in sports and can always count on my Nikon D3100 to produce crystal clear shots inside and out with the video quality among the best available. The secret to higher quality photos and videos is of course, good lighting. While the D3100 can produce great shots in low light, it is recommended to invest in a low light lens, such as the Nikkor AF-S 35 mm F/1.8 G. As for the available kit lens that comes with the camera...well, it is about the only lens you will need for 80% of your picture taking needs. It is a GREAT lens. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take great pictures with a camera that is a great value at it's current price.

We recently purchased the D3100 [and the 18-55 standard lens] along with a 55-300 lens, and a case that came with a Nikon school DVD. It replaced a Panasonic Lumix with 12x zoom for our trip to New Zealand. The DVD was very useful - it helped us take some outstanding photos especially with the powerful zoom lens at night. The standard lens allowed for some spectacular wide angle shots. The videos were also very easy to record even for our children using the Guide mode. The one star penalty was for the fact that for the perfect shot, you had to often change lenses unlike the Panasonic. On one occasion, in the process of doing so in rainy weather, one of the lens settings got accidentally pushed from auto to manual and ruined all shots. The camera didn't prompt any warning, nor compensated for the blur. I guess the SLRs are not as idiot-proof as the point and shoots and need to be carefully checked for settings every time - not always easy to do when you have a spontaneous opportunity.

Only have camera in hand for a short time. It appears to meet all advertised capabilities without any serious pitfalls. The flexability it must offer new camera enthusiasts without complications has got to be spectactuar. Auto-focus and exposure controls are exceptional and greatly contrast with my 4 year old Olympus 500 D-SLR and other SLRs.. Do have one problem with the camera body design regarding overall small size and tiny control buttons and power On/Off switch. Many of these controls are really too small for a person with a glove size 12 or 14 hand. This leads to delays when trying to make quick adustments and sometimes promotes inadvertent set-up errors or missed opportunites for a complex scene shoot. This camera body is best suited for a user with little hands and delicate fingers (none of which are mine). As an image taker it does a great job, including with my non-Nikon specifically related flash unit (Metz MECABLITZ 50). Its current popualarity is well merrited.

As a die hard "film" camera fan I wanted a camera that would augment my Nikon 8008 and move into the digital world beyond simple point & shoot camera's that I had been using. After quite a bit of research and reviews of various camera's online I decided on the D-3100 because of the features, capabilities, price, and versatility offered at what most would describe as an "entry" level DSLR. After only a few weeks shooting various subjects, objects, landscapes etc I have reliazed the D-3100 is much more than an "entry level" camera. It preforms at all the levels I expected and more. The creative capabilities are within reach of most die hard DSLR fans and can still function as a simple P & S when needed. My only advice would have been to offer the 18-105 as the basic package lens instead of the 18-55. I have used the 18-105 that I borrowed from a friend and found it to be the perfect "walk around" lens. Wish I had one! All and all an excellent camera in the Nikon tradition!

Though the camera takes great pictures, I am disappointed in how well it integrates with my computer. Most modern electronic devices include software tools to completely manage the device from a computer. I wanted to take time lapse pictures, but there is no way to automatically trigger pictures OR automatically download the images to the computer. I also thought about using the camera as a video cam, but no luck. Nikon does have a fairly expensive software application that includes some of these pictures, but it doesn't work with the D3100. I even asked if there were plans to support it and received a totally worthless response. It is sad that I can do many of these things with a iPhone or even some point and shoot cameras. As far as taking pictures, the camera is pretty impressive. I've tinkered with many of the settings and it makes taking pictures a snap. I would recommend the camera, but other models include additional features that I would expect from this camera.
