Good, bad and bottom line - CNET Reviews

The Nikon 1 J1 delivers excellent video and low-ISO photo quality, plus some aspects of the camera's performance lead its class.

The CX lens system drops manual focus rings on the lenses; you can't use flash above 1/60 sec; and there's no option for an EVF.

    Bottom Line

The Nikon 1 J1 is a fine camera, but there's nothing here that screams out "buy it" over similar competitors. It's also on the expensive side for a point-and-shoot upgrader, but has drawbacks for the more advanced user.

    Rated 4.4 out of 5★áby 34reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★áby perfect I just returned from 3 weeks in S America, cycling in Argentina and hiking in Chile/Patagonia. My V1 was the perfect camera, far superior to any point and shoot and much more compact than any DSLR, the photos are remarkable, used the 10-30 lens mostly but was very happy to zoom in on wildlife with the 30-110, the AF is super fast, even got great shots without flash of a Tango performance using the smart photo mode. All in all I couldn't be happier with this camera 11/29/2011
Rated 1 out of 5★áby Still images are fuzzy, zero options The four things this camera advertises is all that it does. No panaramic photos, no way to select modes or conditions, it's not a touch screen. It is a very basic point and shoot with a fancy lens. Unfortunately almost every single photo taken in still image mode is fuzzy unless you use the flash. The movies also jump when you take a photo while recording. Definitely not worth this much money. 12/04/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★áby Great Photographs in a small package I own a Nikon D7000, Nikon D90 and Nikon P7100. My Nikon 1 J1 shots are much better then my Nikon P7100 and in low light match my DSLR'S. I own the 10-30mm and 30-110mm lens which produce great photographs. The size of The Nikon 1 J1 is so compact you can use it when you don't want to carry a DSLR. My Nikon P7100 is great for parties but for low light the Nikon 1 J1 beats it hands down. The built in flash is great. I wish it had an optical viewfinder however the LCD is very bright. 07/21/2013
Rated 5 out of 5★áby Excellent!!! This camera is awesome for the seasoned photographer when you do not need to take your big camera and all the gear. This camera is awesome for the beginning photographer because it is so easy to use. This camera is awesome for the family because the pictures are so clear and precise with no effort. The only thing I would change about the camera is to offer more types of lenses. I love this camera more than the D300 I own and I use it more often. 01/29/2013
Rated 3 out of 5★áby Takes execellent pictures in bright light conditions. But doesn't take good pictures with flash or low light. Outdoors in bright light, it takes really nice pictures and videos. However, in low light and indoor situations it ISO up way to high even when using the flash. Another problem is that you only have a choice to for auto ISO 400, 800 and 3200. And most of the time it uses the highest ISO way too often, even when you are using a flash. I had shots taken with the flash and it's using ISO 3200 way too often. Even outdoors in the sun with the flash is on, it used ISO 3200. It appears to always try to expose the subject and background. At ISO 3200 with such a small sensor, the pictures are way to noisy. They really should have and auto ISO 1600. At 1600 the noise is not too bad. On my D700, ISO3200 is fine. Or they really need to have a separate Auto ISO mode for just the flash. I would rather have the background under exposed and subject properly exposed at a lower ISO.Another problem is that there is no auto pop up flash. The flash on this camera is pretty much manual flash. For a more advanced SLR user that's fine. But for an average user, most of the time they are not going to remember to turn on the flash in low light scenes, let alone even use fill flash in bright scenes. In those cases, it will ISO up to 3200 and you going to end up with noisy pictures. Also the manual focus is pretty much useless. You have a little screen on the back of the camera and you are supposed to try to look at that screen to figure out if it is in focus or not. Not even a focus indicator point, so you just have to eyeball it. Which means that it's going to be out of focus most of the time. When they say manual focus, they really mean manual focus with no camera aid at all.Another problem when I got camera it had a really outdated firmware. There was a lot more issues with blurred pictures when I first got it. But after upgrading the firmware, it didn't have as many blurry pictures but it tends to ISO up a lot higher. 10/19/2013
Rated 5 out of 5★áby Very impressed Bought this camera to take on an Alaska cruise. I purchased the two-lens zoom kit. I have only owned point-and-shoot auto-focus cameras before, so I was ready to move up to the next level. After spending some time to learn the features and different modes, I was very excited to use the camera to take landscape and wildlife shots. While our trip was lacking in wildlife, the landscapes were gorgeous and I believe this camera captured the landscapes beautifully. The telephoto lens, in particular, was great and the images I captured are nothing short of amazing. Using the Electronic (Hi) mode to take photos of the glaciers in Glacier Bay calving, I was able to capture ice chunks in mid-air. Using a polarizing filter, water glare from the ship was greatly diminished, and the detail I was able get was stunning (at least in my eyes). As much as I enjoyed using the camera in Alaska, I have really enjoyed using it around my town taking pictures of flowers, landscapes, insects, etc. The size makes it easy to haul around, and with the addition of the 10MM f/2.8 prime lens, it is the complete package for an amateur photographer like myself. I would highly recommend this for the amateur who wants to step up from a point-and-shoot to something more advanced. 08/01/2013
Rated 2 out of 5★áby not so good returned the camera due to inferior photo's (blurry), not worth the price 01/06/2013
Rated 5 out of 5★áby Fantastic! This camera is wonderful. The range of settings and availabilities on the Nikon 1J1 are endless. It captures so much light, I took a picture of a dark corner in my basement, and without any flash or anything, the picture looked like I had taken it in one of the fully lit places. Truly wonderful action camera too, not much blur or anything. I made a video with my friends the other day and it honestly looks like a professional film, and that is just with the lens that it comes with and no other attachments. I can't wait to see how far I can go with the other attachments at my aid! 04/24/2012
