For years I owned an American Harvester dehydrator. It finally gave out recently and I had to look for a replacement. After all of the searching and reading I chose this model because of the higher wattage, 5 trays and included screen and fruit roll sheet. It can take up to 12 trays. I bought all of the extra trays for my old unit but rarely seemed to use more than 4 or 5 at a time. One improvement over older models is the fan at the top. It makes cleanup so much easier. The older models had the fan at the bottom and food would fall down into the fan on occasion. You could shake it out but it was still a pain to clean. This model has flat piece of plastic under all of the trays that can easily be washed with the trays. The handle on top is nice too. So far I've made jerky with the enclosed spice packets (a little peppery for me but good), dried pineapple and mushrooms. This summer I will dry some tomatoes and peppers. The time to dry depends on what you are drying, the thickness of the slices, how heavily you load the unit and ambient humidity. I am happy with this unit and am hoping it lasts as long as my last one did.

I've done a lot of research over the years on dehydrators, and knew that Nesco was a great brand and also that I wanted one that had a variable thermostat. I chose this model and am very happy with it.

We enjoyed the product, works great - just needs a built in timer, we used a timer plugged into an electrical outlet, then plugged hydrator into timer.

we are in the Houston area and have seen reviews on some dehydrators that say it doesn't work as well in humid climates. Does anyone know how well this one performs?

    • A. It was pretty humid when i used this the first time and it done a great job. It made two lbs of jerky in about 5 hours.

    • A. The only reason it wouldn't work as well would be if you were trying to run it outside. It will perform just as well in humid and dry climates.

    • A. Hard to say. If you are running it in a climate controlled environment, i.e. air conditioned and dry, then yes. Not sure what it will do in 80% humidity and 100 degess in the shade, I am thinking it needs a good differential to work effectively. But perhaps you are drying after harvest in the fall when it is cooler and dryer.

    • A. pretty well. I live in Manhattan and we have had a crazy past couple of months with humidity. it adds time to the drying but if you adjust accordingly (like remembering that you let it sit for a couple more hours, i say this because i actually forgot once) it doesn't make a deal breaking difference.

    • A. I'm not sure, but I wonder if that is why I am not thrilled with mine, I live in western New York, and it takes forever to dry things, and they don't get as dry as I'd like. The humidity here this time of year is 70%-100%

    • A. Humidity will not have an effect on your foods while the unit is operating. Problems with humidity will start when the unit is finished, and you store the foods you have dehydrated. You should always take pains to be sure that moisture cannot reach your dehydrated foods - such as using air and moisture-proof containers, and moisture absorbers packaged with the food.

I bought a new Nesco because I had such a wonderful experience with the first one. My Nesco performed great, humidity or no. I would recommend it to anyone. Kim in Louisiana
