I chose this instead of the Kindle for the following reasons: 1. micro-SD chip expandable memory 2. lending feature 3. I can replace the battery myself 4. LCD touch screen at bottom with e-ink for reader is best combination for serious readers as you don't sacrifice much battery life for a little touch, and the touch keyboard is quite easy to use and responsive - it takes the barest touch to advance the page 5. e-pub file format for books 6. page turn buttons (if you don't want to use the touch screen) seem more naturally placed, and you use these buttons a lot I chose an e-reader for the following reasons: 1. large books are no longer cumbersome to carry or read in bed 2. changing the font size at the touch of a screen 3. NYT bestseller e-list starting in the new year, so I am pretty sure any delays in new releases will disappear as well 4. I like gadgets :) I honestly have bought more books since getting the e-reader. When I finish a book, I get another right away. As I live in a rural area, it is much easier to shop this way than to drive almost an hour and a half to get to a decent bookstore.

Does What It's Meant to Do - Read Books

What people really need to know is that you need a computer/internet access so you can create a B&N account. You WILL have to provide a credit card/billing information. This is only used if/when you decide to PURCHASE an eBook. Don't let the poor reviews fool you - registration is a snap, you just need to READ the instructions! The big selling point for me is that I can download books from the library and it's compact and can go with me everywhere. I didn't think it necessary to get the 3G version because I have wi-fi at home. When I thought about how often I'd be downloading books and where I'd be when doing so, I realized it'd be when I was home, so why pay the extra $ to have 3G access? It's ridiculous to gripe about no apps, not enough games, etc. If that's what you want, use your computer or buy a tablet. An eReader is meant to read books and with that in mind, the NOOK is very successful. The pages take just a quick second to turn, with slight "ghosting" or flashing of the text, but it's no more than the time it takes to bat an eyelash or turn a page in a normal book. As with anything new, it takes a little time to navigate the different menus, but they are self-explanatory. When you think of how many books you can download in one compact space (at the eBook price, versus hardback), you can't pass this deal up. You'll have bought roughly 5 new release hard cover books for what you're paying for the NOOK, but you're getting so much more in the long run!

I am an avid reader, several books a week. I was not sure how I would like an e reader. I liked it so much 2 of my daughters have now purchased their own! So we now own 3 and may purcahse another :) You can buy books from Barnes and Noble (using wireless), christian book, kobo, and even Sony(using usb cord). PLUS you can borrow FREE books from your local library . You can NOT borrow with the kindle or shop anywhere but amazon with the kindle. NOTE you also can NOT shop at amazon the the nook. here is a hint BN doesn't tell you, use the SAME email account for up to 6 nooks in your house. You can then read and share without using the borrow feature.

After getting through the start-up process with the help of Barnes & Noble tech support (which was great) I find the Nook to be so convenient to use and am amazed at how easy it is to download new books, etc. I did purchase the 3G wifi because it can be used anywhere. I have taken it with me everywhere and have never had a problem using it. I would highly recommend.

I am an avid reader and had been using the Nook app on my iPhone but it was just so small. I did a lot of research to decide which ereader I wanted. I chose the Nook because you can get books from more sites due to the compatibility with Nook. I LOVE my Nook! I know I'll never have to be without a book again. I keep it in my purse. I do recommend getting a cover to keep it from getting scratched up. I found a really nice cover for $30 at Barnes and Noble. I'm kind of wishing I'd splurged for the Nook Color but only cause I use it so much that I could see reading magazines on it which I didn't think I would. But if you are on a budget, this one is great. And unless you need to be able to download books everywhere, save yourself the money and just get the WiFi. I did have an issue with the battery dying too quick but I contacted B & N customer service and they sent me a new battery.

    • A. No it does not have a back light. That is why it is less stressful on the eyes and I can read for hours on end.

    • A. It does not have a backlight. Backlight causes strain on your eyes and is not comfortable to read with. You can buy a book light which works great. I bought a Mighty Bright Light from ebay for under $10 and it works great. I also bought my Nook cover off ebay, which is a lot cheaper and cuter options than buying it from Barnes and Noble.

    • A. The Nook uses e-ink technology which means it does not have a back light like an lcd screen. You can see the screen very well in bright sun light but can't see it in the dark. Just like a real book.

    • A. Yes, and you can download them to your Nook through wi-fi. I've went online to Borders and downloaded books and put them on my Nook. Kindle books will not work though, their formats are not supported. go to Feedbook.com, Google books, and EBookStack for more free books.

    • A. Yes, and any book in e-pub format will work on the reader. You may want to consider the 99 cent versions, though, as sometimes they have better navigation through the table of contents of the book. I have found the free ones, through any retailer, occasionally frustrating.
