All GMRS radios require a FCC license to opperate. 22-chanel radios use a combination of FRS (unlicensed) and GMRS (licensed) frequencies.

Channels 1-7 (FRS/GMRS shared frequencies)
No license is required if the radio transmits with 1/2 watt of power or less (typically 3 miles or less). If the radio transmits with more than 1/2 watt of power, a GMRS license is required.

Channels 8-14 (FRS frequencies)
These short range channels do not require a license to use but are limited on range and 1/2 watt of output power.

Channels 15-22 (GMRS only frequencies)
A FCC GMRS license is required to opperate a radio at these frequencies, regardless of radio output power. Use of a radio in this range without a FCC license is a federal crime.

Yes, and No... To use the FRS channels (1-12) you need no license. To use the GMRS channels (13-23) you need a license. I doubt many folks actually do get a license...

Do these radios work with any other 2 way radio?

Obviously battery consumption is in direct proportion to use, but I believe you will find the batteries last plenty long for just about any outing or trip. If you're traveling in a car, I would strongly recommend you purchase a power inverter so you can plug in the charger along he way and keep the radios charged. It works great! We had ours on all day and used them constantly. By 5-6pm at night, we did have to go recharge them (charged them for about an hour and used them again for the rest of the night....then gave it an overnight charge for the next day).

I think I got about 3 days but that was with constant use (worried single mother with a teenage son).

I bought 5 sets of these to use for communication in a haunted trail for halloween. They work great even though they have to reach through over 1/2 mile of some pretty dense woods. For those of you thinking you'll get 23 miles out of them, you'll be terribly disappointed. That's only under optimum conditions, like from a mountain top to a valley below with line of sight. Under average use, you'll get about 1 mile at best. It's all about where the 2 radios are and how much stuff the signal has to go through. Other than that, these are great little two-way radios. Just wish they had come with headsets so I didn't have to buy them separately.

Your voice is clear and we even used them convoying on the highway...AND you are able to turn off all of the alerts and sounds so they are good for hunting too.

These are Awesome! I got them for nephews after my kids have been using theirs for 6 months. Ages 6 & 9. They are durable, long range and small enough to fit in their pockets as they run out the door to play with friends. I bought my kids the 3 pack so that I could have one, they could each have one & I can call them home when it is time. Priceless & much less expensive than cell phones.

These work great. They are very clear. The only downside is that they are supposed to reach 24 miles. They might reach 2. I guess the 24 mile rating only applies to straight line of sight. I didn't really expect it yo go 24 miles when I bought it, but maybe 5 would have been nice.
