Excellent Rough Road Bike

Good looking Mongoose Snarl 26" met all expectations for my needs. For the conditions I ride on, like rough asphalt streets with some steep up/down areas along with occasional off road or dirt paths this mountain bike does more then suffice. Me at almost 6'3" 220lbs, this bike is rated to 300lbs. I ruled out buying a full suspension mountain bike or 29" wheels, really don't do mountain downhill but needed a heavy duty bike that could take some punishment without worry. The 24 gear shifters are the 'click' type (not twist), exacting one click movement for each new gear change, front and back. Doesn't have that high speed gearing since it is a mountain bike but plenty of speed for around town. The front fork has an adjustable shock(s) with 100mm/4" of travel, more than enough for road potholes or sudden dip compressions. I purchased this particular bike, with no rear shock suspension, as a 'hard tail' for positive rear traction also less weight than a fully suspended mountain bike. This bike weighs about 31lbs out the of box fully assembled including the kickstand. The 26" (freehub) wheels are single rim with low profile grippy nubs that hum slightly. After a month of riding they show almost no wear. Tire inflation suggested 29lbs max. 65lbs. One of the best features of this bike is the cable pull disc brakes front and rear. Slowing to a stop from 40mph is worry free even on a slope. No 'gallop' no sudden grab or releasing. The frame's aluminum was shaped via hydro-forming and I read is worth the price alone as parts wear out you can upgrade knowing the core bike (frame) is rock solid. The stock parts are a few years old in technology but more than adequate on road pavement. The adult frame is approx. an 18" and even for my size the seat post has room for more adjustment up for a taller person. At this price level even with its stock parts, is an extremely smooth ride with front fork suspension and mountain bike tires that help cushion the ride as well. Dropping off a curb feels like a small bump. I find the turning radius has agility, acceleration is quick, stopping power superb, shifting smooth, ride comfortable, takes abuse....I like it for rough riding roads and look forward to getting on it everyday.

I purchased this bike from my local Wal-Mart and was given the online price, thanks to the dept manager. The bike was fully and PROPERLY assembled and required nothing more than tire inflation. This is a fine bike for the money. It's well -designed and well-built. I find nothing whatsoever substandard or cut-rate about it. It rides well, shifts flawlessly, handles well, and is a joy to ride. Highly recommended.

This bike was 199 online a few weeks ago, not sure why they would up the onlince price to the same as the store price (100 bucks just like that?!). Now the Blackcomb (also by Mongoose) seems like a better deal. I've had the Snarl for a week now and so far have been happy - when it arrived the store put it together for me (free assembly comes with any site to store bike), the disc brakes needed some tweeking (easier than I thought it would be) - seems like the standard thing with disc brakes. I'm going to have to adjust the front derailer, I just haven't gotten to it yet, the chain barely rubs the derailer on a few gears, other than that the tires are not quite as knobby as I thought they would be, but I'll just get better ones when they wear out. I also did get a gel seat cover, but the factory seat is so small that the cover does slide around a little, I might end up just putting a different seat on it, haven't decided for sure yet. So far I've loved it, great for the OLD price - the only reason I'm saying that I would NOT recommend this to a friend is because of the price hike - if you've got 300 then you should get the Blackcomb instead. Hopefully someone that works for Walmart reads this and lowers the online price, we'll see.

Bike came within 3 days, packaged very well. Great looking product. Well built and strong with little to be desired for a mtb in this price range. My only cons are the handle bar stem, crank set and rims (not double walled). For the money its a great starter mtb for trail and light offroad use. Also a bit of a chore tuning all of the cables (expecially derailers) but achieved smooth near perfect shifts after a little trial and error. It might pay to have a bike shop tune it up if you dont have much experience. Definatly happy with this purchase!

The bike arrived at the site-to-store faster than the expected delivery date, in good condition and complete. Upon opening the box, I checked to see if the bike contained the components as listed and/or photographed. The bike was exactly as advertised. I am very satisfied with this bike, because the components, although low end, work very well. My first ride was fun, because the bike rolled over the big rocks and holes and the wide tires handled the sandy roads easily. I will use this bike on forest logging roads and paved roads. I have road bikes for racing and training, so I bought this bike for fun riding in the wet winter weather of the Pacific NW. For the price ($249) this is a great value, but the bike should be used for its intended purpose. It would be nice if Walmart offered a choice of frame sizes, because the medium (18”) frame requires a rider to be about 5’9” or taller.
