Review by Library Journal (2011-05-15)

Sixteen-year-old Jacob Portman no longer believes the stories his grandfather told him when he was a little boy. These are obviously fairy tales about children with mysterious abilities, such as a girl who could levitate and a boy with bees inside him, and not real memories from his grandfather's childhood. Grandpa's sepia-toned photographs of his strange friends also seem fake to Jacob. However, when he gets a chance to visit the island where the stories took place, he can't resist delving into his grandfather's past. Could these odd children really have existed.

VERDICT An original work that defies categorization, this first novel should appeal to readers who like quirky fantasies. Suitable for both adults and a YA audience. Riggs includes many vintage photographs that add a critical touch of the peculiar to his unusual tale.

Rated 4.4 out of 5★ by 9reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Page Gripping! I found this book three days ago in my local Wal-Mart. What caught my eye first was the pictures on the covor..( I thought a few were pretty odd) but they did infact grab my attention. I read the inside of the covor and decided I would give it a try. Im so glad I did! As the story progresses you find yourself falling into it and almost becoming Jacob (the main character). You can almost visualize his experiance. Also, you become so fond of the "Perculiar Children". Feeling almost as if these exceptional beings are becoming your friends. I read and read and read and couldnt keep from wondering what the next page held. I hated to see the book end but maybe there could be a sequel in the making?! For Ransom Riggs first book I greatly applaud him! Any one who is condsidering reading this, I say put your best foot forward and enjoy! 10/20/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Great book for fantasy readers This book was AMAZING. I found myself reading for hours at a time and didn't want to put the book down. If you're interested in the Harry Potter series or the twilight series then you'll be able to appreciate the unusual in this book. Also, those who love anything about time travel or being stuck in time this is the book for you. The best part is you actually get to see the people the book describes like literally its combined with over 20 pictures for the reader to enjoy for endless hours. 11/04/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by !SIMPLY AMAZING! thats all. 08/01/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Starts out great.... I was really drawn in by how the author connected 'delusions' to 'real life'. And for the most part, it was a fantastic read. However, the last few chapters did get VERY weird. I mean, the whole book was kinda so, but it got REALLY out there. And it also seemed rather rushed in the end. 12/15/2011
Rated 3 out of 5★ by Artistic and Original! I ordered this book because of the cover and title. The photographs are amazing and tell an intriguing story. However the story is definately Young Adult literature. It is for teens. I enjoyed reading it though, it should be marveled just for its artistic qualities alone! 05/12/2012
Rated 4 out of 5★ by An unexpected suprise I purchased the book for the pictures and found that it was a great book as well. 09/28/2011
Rated 3 out of 5★ by Peculiar It seemed 'peculiar' at first, but I enjoyed it as I got into it. A good read. 10/01/2011
