Marsona Sound Machine Review
9/7/2010

Customer review by PeggyK

4.0 stars 9/7/2010 by PeggyK

I like the fact that this sound machine is small and compact, simple to operate, and travels well. It doesn't have many sound choices, and that is all right with me, since I am interested in it primarily as a white-noise generator. You can choose rain or wind, or slide a lever to provide a mix of the two sounds. There is also a thumbwheel that controls the volume. To me, the loudest I can make it is just barely loud enough. This volume might suit many people, but my previous sound machine was definitely louder than this one can get, and I always kept it cranked up as loud as possible to drown out my husband's snoring and belching, and the occasional roar of a muscle-car going down the street. Also, at about $79, this machine seems a bit pricey for a basically stripped-down model. Bottom line -- if the price were lower, and if the volume were a bit higher, I would give it 5 stars. But still, it is a handy, compact sound machine for travel and does perform reasonably well.

Just What I Needed

This product does just what I need it to do. It drowns out all of the little annoying noises that make it difficult to concentrate when I'm studying, or to fall asleep. It basically has two sounds. One is white noise that sounds similar to a window air conditioning unit (they call it "waterfall"), and noise that sounds like rain. There is a switch to make these sounds steady versus sounding like waves crashing (they call this "surf"). Of course, there is a volume control. The sounds are very good in quality. The surf really sounds like surf and the rain really sounds like rain. It can get very loud, too. It's kind of annoying to me with it set really loud, but I put earplugs in if I need to really crank it up. That allows the device to drown out loud noises from other rooms, and the earplugs take the edge off of the device itself. This unit is also small and comes with a travel pouch. It is meant to be portable so you can use it in hotel rooms, for instance. My only complaint? It is expensive for what it is. That's not Wal-Mart's fault, as it costs roughly the same price everywhere. It seems like it should cost about a third of what it does. Anyway, I highly recommend this product to those seeking solace from distracting noises. Two thumbs up!

Wonderful machine

Great little white noise machine. I've had mine now for over 2 years. The reviewer who returned one because the sound was too high apparently did not realize there is a slide control on the bottom that lets you adjust the pitch, from low to high. Machine has a lot of volume. My only complaint is that it has to be plugged in and does not have the option to run on a battery, but its sound is much better than my battery-operated travel machine.

Not For Me

Had been using a fan for white nosie and was looking for a smaller, more compact, and more portabe unit. This product met those requirements nicely; however, the sound is too high pitched to provide a relaxing effect. May work well for others, so I would try it out before nixing it or returning it as I did. Am now back to my fan.

White Noise Machine

A bit pricey, but definitely gets the job done. Adjusts from deep white noise to a rain sound and has a sea shore setting if you like that. With the volume control you can turn it up pretty loud. I use it to sleep and block the outside noise and it works great!

not just the sounds of surf, rainfall or waterfall but the more constant static noise that is considered "white noise"

  • A. The waterfall noise is constant - which is what I like. It reminds me of the vaccuum cleaner or the bears they had out when my kids were babies - only it can be turned up much louder. The rainfall sounds like static to me. I don't care for that. To me it sounds like the TV static noice. The surf is a rolling noise - not constant enough for me.

  • A. I realize this question was posted last yr but may be helpful to other shoppers. This is a fancier machine & does not have the constant static white noise. I exchanged it for Marpac's SleepMate 980A which does have it & sounds more like a fan.

  • A. Yes, it does. The "waterfall" setting is the constant white noise on this device. You can also control the timbre of this sound with the slider that goes between waterfall and rain. As you slide it from waterfall to rain, it begins steadily mixing the sounds until you get all the way to rain.

  • A. Yes. It has a switch off/surf/constant. Both switches you can adjust the noise from deep white noise to what sounds like rain but the surf switch makes it rhythmic.

  • A. There is no official "white noise" setting, but I find that the rainfall sound seems a lot like pure white noise to me. You can also slide a lever to get a custom blend of the rain and wind, and that also sounds like the static white noise of a TV set that is not set to an active channel.
