They only "darken" the room because they are dark colored curtains, when the sun is shinning you can see through the material. They do not have an energy efficient backing of any kind. I was very disapointed and intend to return the product ASAP. 10/16/2012

I bought Eclipse brand for another room and they work much better for both darkening and energy efficiency for same price per panel. These had better colors so thats why I got them.
