I bought two cases of these jars. The first canner, all jars were of the "Mainstay" variety. All were cooked in the same manner. Everyone of these jars experienced a protruding lid (lid actually pinched). The lids did pop back into basically the original shape, but the pinch was still clearly visible. The confidence on the vacumm is not high. The second case, I canned along with "Ball" variety jars and lids. The same malfunction with the "Mainstay" lids, the "Ball" performed, as always, without flaw. I conducted another test by packing these "Mainstay" lids on "Ball" jars. The lids failed again. I tried yet another canner with a combination of "Mainstay" jars and lids and "Ball" jars and lids. These jars were placed in the same canner with four other "Ball" jars. All were packed exactly alike. No variables. The "Ball" product performed flawlessly, the "Mainstay"...junk! To add insult to injury...the "Mainstay" product was short a lid in one of the rings in packaging. Of course...I guess one short of these flawed lids was actually a blessing! Photographs show protrusion...I have more, but can't post them!

Great handling jars, but lids suspect

I recently bough two cases of 1/2 pint jars; I processed tuna in 7 of them and 2 buckled but ultimately sealed. I knew the items would be consumed soon, but still worried about storage. I have some kerr jars of tuna, still sealed since 2009 on my shelf as test subjects. I wonder how these will compare. NOT! I think I will get some other/better lids (I need 17 to finish off the two cases) for this large batch of tuna I put in the pressure cooker just before reading these reviews. I go too far to catch my fish to trust these lids with my reputation. On the positive side; I love the shape, and they are easy to handle during filling. Price is good. If you don't intend to store for a long time, these are great.

I have purchased and used numerous cases of these jars for commercial pressure canning over the past two years and have only had one seal failure and zero jar failures! These jars are less expensive that the name brands, even if purchasing the name brand jars through a packaging wholesaler. I don't buy in pallet quantities so even the name brand jars are cheaper by the dozen through Wal*Mart! I like the fact that the jars do not have all the molded lettering on them like name brand jars do becuase I have to label the jars and the labels are much cleaner looking on flat-sided jars. I do reuse my jars as well - customers return them for reuse - and the jars hold up to multiple uses. The only downside is that, because the jars come with gold lids and rings and Wal*Mart does not offer replacements in gold, I either have to purchase new gold lids in bulk from a wholesaler or use the silver name brand rings available off the shelf, but this is a minor issue, especially if using the jars for home canning. ***** Five stars!

Beware, lids bulk under pressure canning.

There was only a dollar difference between the ball jars and Mainstays brand. I canned a total of 9 mainstay jars under 10lbs pressure with 3 ball lids and 6 mainstay lids. 4 of the mainstay lids bulked up. The bath water was cloudy so I know the seal is not good on these four.I think if you are going to water bath these lids, you won't have a problem but I would not use the lids for pressure cooking. Just pay the dollar extra for the ball jars that come with the ball lids so you don't waste time canning something you can't store.

I bought the lids only. Every one bent/pinched during the canning process. I made pickles and so it was a boiling bath for 5 minutes only. I tried mainstay because the other brand was sold out. Please save yourself work and use another brand of lids.

This is a great jar. I have been using this jar for over a year for my homemade salsa. I've purchased the jars at every store within 100 miles of my home. They are the best value for the size! I love that the jar is smooth all the way around so that labels fit flat without any bumps. Way to go Walmart! Please don't stop selling this jar.

I wanted to give canning chicken a try. To make it a better value than store bought can chicken I bought these jars which are the cheapest I know of. They are not standard size and a majority of the rings had dents in them. Only a few of them actually sealed. However if you are using them for non sealing projects such as to store homemade mixes, gifts in a jar, or just to paint or do some other craft with these are perfect. So cheap and I love that there is no brand name on the side.

These Jars are great for crafters. I bought them for layered cookie mixes for christmas gifts. The jars don't have any writing on the glass which is very desireable for crafting. Considering craft stores charge $2 each for a jar with no writing, these are a great deal! I did not use them for hot water canning however, so I cannot attest to the ease of sealing them.

If you're looking for a jar for a candle or a craft, fine, proceed. It you need this to function, oh I don't know....IN THE WAY IT IS MEANT TO FUNCTION, scroll on by. I am SO ticked after using this brand because it was a dollar cheaper than the competitor. If you insist on buying them, buy the brand name sealing disks, but honestly at that point it's the same price as buying the competitors in the first place. I canned a dozen jars each of jelly and pickles. Two or three sealing disks from each set never sealed correctly in the first place. Annoying. Then I happened to check them a month or two later. I was LIVID to find that I had LOST 6 more jars because the rings failed!! Like I said--- complete waste of money, time and produce!!

  • A. No, however, there are molding seams that run up and down on the jars. Some are in the corners and others in the middle of the flat sides, but neither hinder applying lables nor are they obvious.
